ESO Dragonknight Tank Build – T3 Reborn

Welcome to the T3 Reborn Dragonknight Tank Build for The Elder Scrolls Online.

UPDATED BUILD FOR THIEVES GUILD HERE

Objective

Tanking Serpent Trial

Tanking Serpent Trial

The T3 build has manifested into a self-sustaining oasis of tanking awesomeness. I wanted to create a tank that could not only hold enemies attention, control the environment, but one that is self reliant as well.  You’re not going to replace the healer anytime soon, though when one goes down you can stay alive for a very long time giving yourself an advantage over other builds.

The character I’m using for this build is Deltia.  He’s a mean looking Nord with the defensive passives to boot.  I decided to go back to Werewolf (WW) with the new changes in patch 1.5.  More passive stamina and ultimate generation equals better tanking.  Ideally, you can morph and change this build as you see fit, but that racial combination with WW seems best for a front line tank.

Like all builds, you strengthen one thing only to sacrifice another.  The main thing you want is a sturdy tank, but one that can do more than hold block and swing once every 30 seconds.  The down side is, you’re not going to top the charts in DPS and you can’t provide secondary healing.  Your role is to survive and keep pressure away from your team and T3 excels at that.

+ Tough as a nails

+ Self sufficient

+ Resource management

– Lacking damage

Skills

Elder Scrolls Online T3 Post SO and Vet DSADELTIA STORY TIME: The night prior to this update, we had a Veteran Dragonstar Arena run that wasn’t going well.  It was late, we were tired, and we had some new players in Stage 10.  Finally we got our act together and had the boss down to 4% life when everyone but me decided to die.  I could hear the sighs, moans and grunts of frustration and rage.  But T3 wasn’t done, I had a ultimate (Corrosive Armor).  I popped it, ran over with three Fire Atronachs and the main boss beating on me and standing in an enemy Negate and resurrected our primary DPS.  We beat it, an impossible comeback happens and with this build, you’ll be able to do the same sorts of things.

Bar One | Sword and Shield

“Lock and block!”  Bar one is where we spend most of our time tanking.  Generally, you’ll be blocking, keep up buffs and taunts while maintaining aggro on mobs.  You can also self heal and control the crowd (CC) so if worst comes to worst, you can almost do everything within this bar alone.

  • Volatile Armor (morph Spiked Armor | Draconic Power skill line) –  I like the Volatile Armor morph for the obvious reasons and one subtle one.  It buffs our armor, returns physical damage AND does and AoE damage on cast.  While that AoE doesn’t hit very hard and look spectacular, it does generate a decent amount of ultimate throughout the fight.  So when in a group or even opening a fight, try to pop this to get a ultimate boost.
  • Pierce Armor (morph of Puncture | One Hand and Shield skill line) – The standard taunt with the spell resistance debuff.  I’m honestly not a huge fan of massive armor but I am a fan of killing things quickly.  This does the latter and helps the DPS burn down bosses quickly.  Key to this is to taunt the highest priority target on you and to not use this as a replacement DPS tool.  Taunt and debuff, but don’t spam.
  • Choking Talons (morph of Dark Talons | Draconic Power skill line) – Did you know that the 15% mitigation damage this provides works with bosses? I didn’t until Parfax told which I immediately switched morphs.  This ability is still our main source crowd control   The trick to using this properly as saving enough magicka for emergency self-heals.  Don’t spam this constantly though a case could be made for all light armor DK tank.
  • Defensive Stance (morph of Defensive Posture | One Hand and Shield skill line) – I’ve went back and forth between both morphs and really like Defensive Stance now.  Reason is, yes Absorb gives you heals, but who needs healing if you can reflect on the damage?  The stun Defensive Stance provides is the trick, stunning annoying caster for three seconds is better than a self-heal.  Plus the added block mitigation and reduces block cost makes it a must have main bar ability.
  • Green Dragon Blood (morph of Dragon Blood | Draconic Power skill line) – What can you say about the blood of titans?  Well, it’s amazing.  Keep the buff up for massive health and stamina regeneration and an emergency heal.  I typically only use this under 30% since it scales off the amount of health LOST and the amount that you have.  You should be the tanky beating heart DK so when you stop seeing that, make sure you cast it ASAP.
  • [Ultimate] Pack Leader (morph of Werewolf Transformation | World Werewolf skill line) – I’m back to howling and loving it!  They slightly buffed the ultimate generation of the WW via Blood Rage.  Now for merely having this on my bar I generate six ultimate every three seconds while taking damage.  I consider this a must for serious tanks because our ultimate generation is lacking.  I rarely use this to morph into a WW since it’s hard to hold aggro as a rabbited beast (though it does look sweet).  The only time I’d suggest using it is for a massive resource boost via the a Earthen Heart passive Battle Roar.  Hit the ability, get resources back then hit your ultimate again to morph bank into your normal tank form.
    • Standard of Might (morph of Dragonknight Standard | Ardent Flame skill line) – While the ultimate generation of Werewolf is huge, sometimes having flexibility is just as important in a fight with a lot of mobs.  For instance, wave five of Veteran Dragonstar Arena I have both ultimates slotted.  Standard is dropped on Shadow Casters and I save Corrosive Armor for the boss round where I have to tank a lot of mobs.

Bar Two | Sword and Shield

I changed to sword and board from the destruction staff after getting killed while swapping.  The extra damage doesn’t seem worth it and especially in Trials, you need to block and make sure the boss doesn’t chase down a DPS.

  • Extended Chains (morph of Fiery Grip | Ardent Flame skill line) – The ONLY class with a decent pull, “chain them and bang’em.”  I consider this a must for trash pulls or Dragonstar Arena.  Watch your magicka as you can blow through it fast.  Also, do your best not to pull a wondering rabbit 🙂 I’ve also stopped swapping this ability out as it seems to work as an aggro tool (even on bosses).  This is my emergency range aggro when I’ve over taunted the enemy.
  • Inner Beast (morph of Inner Fire | Undaunted skill line) – Our range taunt that should be saved for an opener or red circle crazy death time.  There WILL be a time where you can’t reach the target for a Pierce Armor.  Switch to bar two, BLOCK and cast.  And tell your allies STOP using that dang synergy.  It’s a DPS and HPS loss so when you see “Radiate” don’t click it.  Try not to cast this on every single enemy if possible.  One, ESO doesn’t want you to tank EVERYTHING and two, you hate to see someone die to a synergy Radiant because they couldn’t block.  Sometimes the best opener is a Extended Chains, bar swap, and Pierce Armor.
  • Cinder Storm (morph of Ash Cloud | Earthen Heart skill line) – I love me some Storm.  Miss chance, damage and snare.  Consider this marking our spot as a tank.  Keep the boss in this area along with Hist Bark passive and you’ll be saving massive stamina and you’re healer precious magicka.  And every cast with this restores 4% stamina.  So if you can’t block but have magicka, dump it here to survive.
  • Crippling Slash (morph of Low Slash | One Hand and Shield skill line) –  1.5 changed this ability into a ultimate generation tool with some strong damage.  I can generate five ultimate each time I use this ability plus reduce the enemies damage.  I use this as a DPS and stamina dump tool.  With this skill and the new Gargoyle two-piece set, you’ll be an ultimate machine.  And 15% damage reduction to the target isn’t bad either.
  • Igneous Weapons (morph of Molten Weapons | Earthen Heart skill line) – I consider this a mandatory Dragonknight group ability.  If you bring in a DK as healer, tank, red circle lover, anything they need to keep this up.  Plus it builds ultimate out of combat via the Earthen Heart passive Mountain’s Blessing.  So while listening to your raid leaders 15 minute monolog on boss tactics that you’ll forget within five seconds of fighting (Atropos I love you), keep casting this until you have enough for a big dog ultimate.
  • Corrosive Armor (morph of Magma Armor | Earthen Heart skill line) – No Dragonknight Standard and for good reason.  “If you’re going to tank, tank.” Some piece of advice that I’ve handed out and need to listen too, making the swap for Corrosive Armor an insane survival tool.  Not only does this make your DK god mode for 10 seconds, but it reduces weapon damage.  Ironically, the hardest boss in the game uses poison or weapon damage.  Meaning, this ability is just as powerful as Templar’s Nova and it’ll be hard for you to die.

But what would a Deltia build be without phat loots?  Let’s check out what keep this monster rolling.

Gear

GOAL = 3,200 health > Armor hard cap 3,300 > stamina regeneration soft cap 135

T3 New Gear Sheet

t3 Gear picture

The idea here is to be tough but not totally dependent on the healer.  For that we need a lot of health and resource generation.  Some of these sets, gear, glyphs, etc take a long time to get so be patient.

Armor Weight – 5/2 split (5 heavy and 2 light) After tanking Serpent Trials, you’ll really need at least five pieces of heavy armor.  Being near or at 3300 armor is important to avoid one shot at the very hardest boss.  That being said, you can still do 5 light and 2 heavy if you’re just doing dungeons or Dragonstar.  I may have been wrong about heavy armor, it seems legit now and has good resource return when multiple mobs are attacking.

Set Bonuses (five Hist Bark, five Footman’s, and two Blood Spawn)

  • Blood Spawn Set – This is a brand new set in patch 1.5 that drops in Spindleclutch.  It’s an absolute game changer considering the ultimate generation.  This with Werewolf makes your tank a machine especially with Magma Armor.
    • In Veteran DSA, it’s more about resource management than ultimate generation (as the tank) so I swap in the Engine Guardian set.
  • Hist Bark – This crafted set provides some great bonuses, but the five piece dodge chance really helps out our stamina.  Since enemies have a high miss chance with this and Cinder Storm, yet another way to avoid medium armor or five pieces of heavy.
  • Footman’s – I had some leftover jewelry from Dragonstar Arena and I put it good use providing a decent stat boost for three pieces.

Traits –  You want the most out of your stats via infused on large pieces plus the divines for the Mundus Stone.  We can’t change the drop sets, but they are generally okay not amazing.

Mundus Stone – I rock the Atronach on this build for big time magicka regeneration.  With all of these passives, abilities, and gear I can hold nearly all resources at soft cap.  I can block, cast, dodge, heal where other tanks can’t.  T3 FTW.

Fighting

eso 2014-11-06 06-51-57-77I could make  a spreadsheet saying at this very second use X, Y, or Z, but that never works.  You need to focus on priories rather than a stagnate ineffective series of skills.  This is what I focus on.

  • Neutralizing the most deadly enemy – ESO doesn’t allow for a one-button  mashing tank that pulls all the mobs.  So we’re going to have to find the most deadly one.  This is typically obvious with the giant spider boss or a towering troll.  Only taunt what you can handle.  If that’s a boss and two adds, great.  If not, you’ll run out of stamina, get knocked down and die.  You can’t take everything but you can lock down slow, stun, and irritate those little NPCs.
  • Interrupts – I’ve noticed that most tanks don’t interrupt.  You know, the big circle telegraphed icon above the enemies head.  Sometimes it’s three seconds, sometimes it’s a split second.  Either way, our responsibility is to stop that deadly cast that can make our break our boss run.
  • Buffs – Another responsibility is to keep our buffs and debuffs up for mitigation and added DPS.  Bar one has most of our buffs, but wait for a time when your healer is ready so you can swap bars and use bar two’s buffs quickly.  Adding a Cinder Storm or Igneous Weapons here and there can have a major impact on the overall groups performance over time.
  • Damage – “Wannnn I’m a tank I don’t need to DPS.”  BS, everyone needs to do some type of damage.  I’ve changed my build for single target damage via Crippling Slash.  My problem is I try to do too much DPS and forget priorities one, two, and three.  If the boss is at one percent, everyone’s dead, you can’t block the boss to death.

For those that love scripted actions, here’s what I normally do.

  • Bar two – buff Igneous Weapons throw down Cinder Storm and bar Swap
  • Bar one – Buff Volatile Armor, Green Dragon Blood, and Defensive Posture, now move in
  • Yes another bar swap to Extended Chains as I close the distance and than Pierce armor back on one
  • Now it’s priority mode watching, waiting, and surviving

While Leveling

Ieso 2014-11-20 06-48-44-76‘ve been getting a lot of questions about early on leveling, builds in so forth.  I know it’s hard to play T3 at level 17, but you just have to do what works until you can.

From levels 1-15, I almost always go with a Restoration Staff.  I can do damage via my class abilities so I don’t have to rely on non-class skill lines.  With Healing Springs alone, I can take on nearly anything until I get my second bar.

15-Green Dragon Blood, I pretty much Resto/Destro until I get Green Dragon Blood.  You can do a  million different things, but you need to be able to have some healing while soloing around and Healing Springs is a simple cost effective heal.  Destro fire staff on a Dk is just two powerful not to wield and light up enemies left and right.  Everything about this class changes once you get Green Dragon Blood (GDB).

Post GDB, now we have two bars unlocked plus the mac daddy of self-heals.  No more staff and a skirt.  Time to rock some light and heavy combo and go sword and shield.  At this point, you’ll really start to feel powerful and defensive.  Until then, it’s very hard since you can’t heal yourself.

Now go grind Craglon and get that lowbie to VR 14 and join me questing for the Queen.  Thanks for reading and I look forward to your feedback.

    Excellent guide! Lovin’ it so much Deltia keep up the outstanding work! Also I have a question, attribute points? how many for health etc;

    • Deltia on November 6, 2014 at 6:10 pm

I roll 20 magicka 20 stamina and 22 health but you could run whatever as long as you hit those numbers. Glad you liked it.

      • David on January 3, 2015 at 10:17 pm

Do you still roll this? Im lvl 40 have everything pretty even still feel like im not tanky at all, die multiple times in dungeons some times.

        • Deltia on January 3, 2015 at 10:20 pm

Oh yeah. At level 40 isn’t really a true test as you don’t have all the passives to make it shine. It still works great, might go Resto Destro staff while leveling than switch when at end game.

          • David on January 5, 2015 at 8:29 pm

Yeah i just hit vet 1 and put 28 in health and the rest in magicka, its alot better than before still working my way up to your survivability though. One day ill get those amazing set pieces lol. Off topic when it comes to vet armor should I craft/buy armor every 4 vet lvls or every lvl till lvl 14.

          • Nicholas on March 13, 2015 at 11:39 pm

I was just wondering what passives should I use with this build?

          • Deltia on March 14, 2015 at 7:42 pm

I use them all, as in like all of them. Starting off take a lot of armor passives and class skill line.

      • george on June 23, 2015 at 11:24 pm

Was curious about the stamina. You replied 20 but in the description it is 0. Thanks

  2. Hamad Al Suwaidi on November 6, 2014 at 4:05 pm

oh my bad xD i didnt see it in the skills section *derp*

  3. Slackmare on November 7, 2014 at 2:24 am

Another gem. Great guide. Well done on the trailer too. The trailer alone got me itching to dust off my dk.
I had no idea that igneous weapons would generate out of combat ult. with the mountain blessing passive. Now that is the best tip I’ve heard in a long time.
Question: what other skills in the game generate out of combat ultimate if any? DK skill or not.

    • Deltia on November 7, 2014 at 1:03 pm

Thanks Slackmare glad you liked it. Actually quiet a few abilities generate out of combat ult. Templar’s have the same passive Prism which gives 2 ult for casting a Dawn’s Wrath ability. So you could spam Solar Barrage a million times if you wanted. A general one is Healing Springs on a party because ult is generated by criting so any heal will work in or out of combat.

      • TheDarkLord679 on June 22, 2015 at 4:52 pm

Awesome job since I’ve been doing this build I haven’t died once very effective!

  4. Sungod on November 7, 2014 at 4:07 am

    Craglorn grind is dead?

    • Deltia on November 7, 2014 at 1:01 pm

I just think the leveling meta has changed. I think (don’t know) that grinding large groups of mobs might be the best XP though I’m trying to confirm.

  5. Danii on November 7, 2014 at 6:21 am

Hey Deltia, love your work! Just wondered if there are any armour set bonuses you’d recommend while levelling this build?

    • Deltia on November 7, 2014 at 1:00 pm

Hey Danii, probably something that helps with managing resources. I think Seducers is always a strong choice for magicka regen and reduction in cost. Something like that might help out casting spells.

  6. Anahuarque on November 7, 2014 at 5:43 pm

what is the style of gear u currently have on?

    • Deltia on November 7, 2014 at 7:07 pm

The helm/shoulders is a drop set with chest Anicent Elf and the rest Breton. Sword and shield is the PvP set so I don’t get to choice that.

  7. Calico on November 8, 2014 at 12:05 pm

3 questions real quick. 1) I have a VR1 Tank, High Elf. Does his racial abilities make him a good choice for end-game tanking or do you recommend a reroll into Nord? The min maxer in me is causing me all sorts of grief. lol

    2) Do you have issues tanking as a wolf with poison heavy dungeons. I tanked VR12 Fungal Grotto last night with my NB and completed it, but it was a nightmare. Can’t imagine doing it as a wolf with Poison everywhere.

    3) What are the exact number you feel comfortable with in attributes? You mention 3200 health and close to soft-cap on others. Best I got now (but gear is not all maxed) is like 2200 mag, 2100 stam (with my NB). Is this about what to expect? I know you have a Nord so you got some help with health, I’m sitting at 3100.

Sorry for the book here, but your the dude I follow most when it comes to tanking–thought you best suited to help.

    • Deltia on November 8, 2014 at 1:54 pm

Hey Calico thanks for writing. 1) you could make a high elf work, but ultimately the Nord is the true king. I wouldn’t see reroll if you’re desperately in love with the character, though you’ll be missing out on 6% damage reduction. 2) I don’t know if there’s a question in here, but the developers told me that poison damage is only affective WHILE in Werewolf form. So as long as you don’t transform, you’re taking the same damage as everyone else. It’s up to the healer to purge or purify your group. 3) As far as numbers go, I don’t concern myself with large pools of stamina and magicka. I’m more worried about their regeneration and that’s what I focus on. My Nord has like 3200 health, 1700/1600 magicka and stamina but I’m near soft cap on regen. I don’t need to hit hard, but I need to be able to keep up blocking and self-heals. Thanks for writing in and I hope this helps.

      • Calico on November 8, 2014 at 3:43 pm

Ah ok, didnt realise the poison damage is only on Wolf form. Perfect, I’m going to test it out. Appreciate the response and keep on rocking out content–I know I enjoy it!

  8. Anahuarque on November 8, 2014 at 3:29 pm

I dont have any footman’s jewels, what would u recommend as another choice that is comparable

    • Deltia on November 8, 2014 at 5:01 pm

It’s really hard to find a three piece jewelry set that isn’t hard to obtain. A decent one is Unassailable or Soulshine depending on your level. Anything really as it will help overall.

  9. Anahuarque on November 9, 2014 at 10:52 pm

I guess i need to find a new group of ppl to try and dungeon with, cause my current group is just not skilled enough and not willing to change or modify builds 🙁

    • Deltia on November 10, 2014 at 11:23 am

That’s too bad because it can be done. I’d just suggest trying to holler in chat for a group and meet people that way. You’ll eventually find like minded people though it may be painful at first.

    • Calico on November 10, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Get ahold of me @calicojax , I’m always up for daily groups..

  10. Anahuarque on November 10, 2014 at 7:12 pm

what community are u guys part off

    • Deltia on November 11, 2014 at 12:36 am

      What do you mean?

  11. chris on November 11, 2014 at 6:32 pm

This represents a good example of why I have left ESO. So tanks wear light armor.? Wow. Like most MMOs the game is not about playing what you want but what works. be a werewolf and wear light armor too be a good tank. Dont get me wrong my rank is not against your guide but against the game. Was always hoping ESO would be different. Just like alll MMOS

  12. ESO Undaunted Gear Guide on November 17, 2014 at 11:27 pm

[…] Build – I’m currently using this on my T3 build until I get the Spindleclutch shoulders.  I love this as it’s kind of a random Warlock set […]

  13. Jordik on November 18, 2014 at 7:07 am

Like i see u sugest 3 items with divine. You have to know that they are not stucking. If u get 1 piece with divine or 3 pieces, you only get 0,8%. Test it plz. Nice guide :D.

  14. Tyr on November 20, 2014 at 2:02 pm

Hey Deltia, really enjoy your guides. So first question to this Build, is it possible to tank vet arena with 5 pieces light? How u would change your Build if u had the Blood Spawns set? And at least off topic question, do u write a new dk dps guide, maybe with the Valkyn Skorias set? 🙂

    Greetings

    • Deltia on November 20, 2014 at 2:19 pm

Thanks for the comment. It’s very possible to tank DSA with light armor. I did it on a VR 8 Sorc though it was harder. I just updated the guide with the new Blood Spawn pieces (probably while you were writing this). And oh yeah DK DPS is coming after I farm City of Ash today. High DoT fire damage it’s gonna rock. Stay tuned!

      • Cameron on October 16, 2015 at 4:54 pm

why use hist bark i’m confused you could have a much better 5 piece heavy armor set and just use evasion from the medium armor skill line

  15. Jugle on November 20, 2014 at 8:18 pm

Hey Deltia, thanks for the great guides! I had a couple of questions in regards to this build. For Mundus Stone, are you still using The Atronach as it says in the description, or did you switch to The Lady as it shows in the screenshots? And if you are using The Lady now, do you struggle at all managing your magicka?

Also, what would you recommend for gear outside of Footman’s? I’m currently at VR1 and looking for a substitute until I feel comfortable enough to go into Dragonstar Arena. Thanks!

    • Deltia on November 20, 2014 at 8:29 pm

Hey Jugle, Thanks for the comment. Regarding Mundus, I’m testing out the Lady with Divines vs. Reinforced on my small armor pieces.

I honestly can’t answer you question about magicka until I test it some more, but with Tri-pots I should be fine.

Outside of footman’s Alesia’s Bulwark works pretty good and that can be crafted. Hope that helps!

      • Jugle on November 20, 2014 at 8:39 pm

Thanks for the reply! I’ll give Alesia’s Bulwark a go and see how it feels. Looking forward to seeing the results from testing!

  16. Tyr on November 20, 2014 at 11:29 pm

Hey, thanks for your direct answer and yeah, i think i wrote my post while u was updating the Guide xD. I hope u had more luck than I in City of Ash, got nothing again, only his badly Greatsword -.-.

But one question about tanking, does Cinder Storm works on bosses?

  17. Beating Veteran Dragonstar Arena on November 30, 2014 at 12:03 pm

[…] Vet DSA asked me to join them and they were looking for a tank if I knew one.  Why yes I did, Mr. T3 was ready to take down Veteran […]

  18. DeusEx on December 4, 2014 at 3:04 pm

Then armor hardcap is reached by using spiked armor skill?

    • Deltia on December 4, 2014 at 4:43 pm

No, with the gear setup if I and Lady Mundus stone, I’m sitting at 3200. The proc from the Blood Spawn puts me there or a Ring of Preservation which someone usually runs in a large group.

  19. wriggly40 on December 4, 2014 at 9:18 pm

hi, love your great guides for all your builds. I’m just after some info how you managed to reach soft cap? I have something similar to your dk, 5 heavy 2 light etc but am short of your cap. I would love a bit more info on this. i know gear makes a difference but are you on potions or food to get max stamina etc? many thanks

  20. kiltedpiper on December 8, 2014 at 1:07 pm

Deltia – awesome guide as usual. I continually refer to it. Question on armor type, I am working on a Vet 1 Templar tank, and was working with the idea that Stamina Regen was one of the most important things. So, I wear 5 medium (+20% stam regen and -20% cost of stam abilities). However, with the new(ish) heavy armor update, and your redone guide, I was wondering if coming back to heavy would be better. As a Templar, Rune Focus allows me to boost armor and spell resist, currently, not morphed or maxed its +1250. Which puts me amost 500 over softcap. So, with that, would I be better to stick with medium, or still jump to heavy? Oh, I was generally wearing 2 light as well to help with magicka regen.

    • Deltia on December 8, 2014 at 6:30 pm

I’m honestly a big fan of Heavy armor right now. I think a five heavy two light set works for almost all classes. I’d go with Radiant Aura for stamina regeneration rather than medium armor. That way you get the benefit of 80% regen without sacrificing the block reduction that heavy provides.

  21. kiltedpiper on December 8, 2014 at 6:41 pm

sounds good. Does require a respec for radiant vs repentance, but……you convinced me a few podcasts ago that that was a good move.

  22. Tyr on December 9, 2014 at 5:04 pm

    Hey Deltia,

i want to ask again if cinder Storm works on bosses? And one more Question, i have 2046 Magicka and 74 regen, so more than u, but how do u handle your magicka managment? Im out of Magicka so often, thats terrible 😛 So how du u manage this?

Greetings and i want to say that i love your site, im on it every day and hope to see something new and interesting guides and so on 🙂

Keep up the good work! 🙂

    • Deltia on December 9, 2014 at 10:50 pm

From all that I know, Tyr, Cinder Storm does work on bosses (meaning miss chanced). That’s why so many tanks run Cinder Storm with Hist Bark.

Regarding Magicka generation, I use ultimates for return magicka more so than passive generation. Make sure you have the Earthen Heart passive Battle Roar than every time you drop a Standard, BANG 800 magicka. Combine that with a potion, and I rarely run out.

Glad you’re enjoying the site, thanks for the comment.

  23. Gabriel on December 10, 2014 at 12:03 am

Dumb question… do those 3.2 armor are achieved without casting Spiked Armor? If so, can you elaborate a bit on how to reach that… Wearing 7 Heavy and still sitting at 2.k’ish…

That’s with Armor, Lady Mundus, and two piece Bloodspawn proc. If you don’t have Blood Spawn, you can use Ring of Preservation in Fighters Guild to reach that number.

      • Gabriel on December 10, 2014 at 8:23 pm

Thanks. Makes perfect sense now. Farming that Bloodspawn 😉

  24. Danii on December 18, 2014 at 4:43 pm

Another great build as usual! 🙂 I would love to see your take on a templar caster/healer build if you can get around to it! Keep up the great work!

  25. Nergal on December 21, 2014 at 6:34 am

    Hey!
I´m building this tank right now and have a question.
Are you sure about the poisonweakness i human form? Have you tested this? My friend that´s a werewolf think that she has the weakness at all times..? Under “Active effects” the poisinweakness i always there? Either way, is it worth being a werewolf regardless the poisonweakness? Or are you 100% sure that you´re ok in human form?

    Cheers, Nergal

    • Deltia on December 21, 2014 at 1:29 pm

Hey Nergal. Poison only effects you in Werewolf form, something I never go into so I don’t have to worry about mitigating it. Yes I have tested this at Fungal Grotto. I am 100% sure, if you want proof you can listen to me playing with Eric Wrobel the ESO designer who made WW changes in ESO Live Six I think.

      • Nergal on December 21, 2014 at 1:42 pm

        Sweet! I´m becoming a ww tonight =)
Thanks for a great build and great tips!

  26. wriggly40 on December 21, 2014 at 4:10 pm

You might want to recheck about poison weakness. I went up against spiders and spider world bosses and found them particularly deadly to my ww. also this thread says it effects human form http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/werewolf-passives/

    • Deltia on December 21, 2014 at 11:50 pm

People question me all the time about this. In ESO Live (I think six), I played with the deveolper Eric Wroble who designed the Werewolf mechanics. Straight from his mouth during the show he said it only affects you in Werewolf form. I’ve tanked Sanctum Trials successfully and never have a taken more damage than my party. Those spiders in the dungeon Spindleclutch or Fungal are tough for anyone not just Werewolfs. Trust me on this, do a test yourself with FTC and see damage with and without Werewolf. As soon as it gets changed I’ll update my Werewolf but I’m 99% sure its not affected.

nice solo bookcase boss kill! now I have proper inspiration to start my first DK, tyvm Deltia

  28. Deviant on December 24, 2014 at 2:48 pm

Outstanding guide!! Can you please tell me how/where you got the dwarven sphere that helps you out? Keep up the excellent work!!

    • Deltia on December 24, 2014 at 7:44 pm

Sure, it’s the Engine Guardian set found in this guide.

  29. Phaedrus on December 30, 2014 at 8:37 pm

I like this guide a lot and find it helpful to build my tanking skills.

I have a question about the masters sword though. Do you think it’s worth it to replace the hist bark sword on my main close range taunt bar and lose the 5 set bonus? I have the golden masters sword from PvP leaderboards and it’s pretty nice.

    • Deltia on December 30, 2014 at 9:08 pm

I do not. A 200 heal vs getting 18% chance to miss is not that advantageous. Even a 400 heal wouldn’t be worth sacrificing that in my opinion. I have one too, more of a trophy than useful.

      • Phaedrus on December 30, 2014 at 9:24 pm

Ya I thought you might say that. It’s too bad with these master items. It’s like oooh that’s cool let me try and use it…oh wait it’s not that cool.

I wish they could make these items so appealing that you could do such a thing.

    • chris on August 10, 2015 at 4:30 pm

Cinder storm says nothing about restoring 4 percent stamina

  30. bill on December 31, 2014 at 3:03 am

in the skill picture you have 27 stam and 35 magicka but in your comments you have 20 20 22.. which one is it?

    • Deltia on December 31, 2014 at 1:44 pm

Bill, I honestly change this all the time. Right now, 25 health and 35 magicka works. The most important thing is to have enough health FIRST. so reaching 3400 or even 3200 is priority number one. Then go ahead and dump the rest in the stat you use most which is magicka for me.

      • kiltedpiper on December 31, 2014 at 5:27 pm

So for leveling is there a chart or basic formula for determining max health needed at say VR1? I was thinking of putting all points into health, then enchanting for mag or stam, depending on if I was running a stam or mag build, dumb, or ok?

  31. Kil_07 on January 2, 2015 at 4:49 pm

As I don’t get to do much Undaunted at the moment, especially not gold key stuff, what would you recommend for head and shoulder in the meantime? A crafted set with 2 piece armour bonus perhaps? Like deaths wind, Alessia Bulwark. Or maybe Oblivions Foe for some health regen…

  33. Glen on January 8, 2015 at 2:13 pm

Finally getting around to my tank.lol One question – the passive on WW for ultimate generation – It does not read that you have to have WW ultimate slotted. It simply say generate X ultimate while in human form per hit??

    • Deltia on January 8, 2015 at 6:17 pm

Top of ability says “WITH WEREWOLF TRANSFORMATION ULTIMATE SLOTTED.” So yeah it’s required.

      • Glen on January 9, 2015 at 4:05 am

        lol DUH……….sorry I need to lrn2read 😀

  34. Lavum on January 11, 2015 at 8:34 am

Have you Considered using the Malubeth’s set? It seems to be very popular with the other tanks I know. Face it, we are always getting beat on LOL!

    • Deltia on January 11, 2015 at 4:48 pm

I have but didn’t find it useful. I’d much rather have a burst of resources or ultimate rather than 700 health spread over 600 seconds. I’m on Sorc or Nightblade tank, it’s great. But my DK can Green Dragon Blood for 1000 instantly, so the head seems useless.

  35. Thracius on January 14, 2015 at 10:49 pm

I absolutely loved your video! I have been out of ESO for awhile and coming back for more fun so thank you for helping me to re-acclimate 🙂

Which mod are you using in your video seems very useful?

  36. Schannen on January 26, 2015 at 9:37 pm

Hey deltia love the build but i didnt see any specifications on what passives you take. I see you have a lot of points in abilities you dont use on your bar so i would assume i wouldnt need to put a skill point in those.

    • Deltia on January 26, 2015 at 10:26 pm

I take them all pretty much. If you’re leveling, get Battle Roar first.

  37. Andrea on January 28, 2015 at 9:18 am

Hi , thank you for this website!
I am a new player and i found really hard to level solo using destruction staff and cloth armor so i am looking to change things and try to be more tanky 😀
Is possible to use this build duiring leveling ?
Can you please suggest me where i must put my stat point (magica/stamina/health)?
    Thanks in advance

    • Andrea on January 28, 2015 at 9:24 am

Last question could you please give a link to your esohead build?
      thank you

thank you for reply and sorry for my typos 😐 …
          I have some questions:
          1) must i have to focus magica during leveling (seems magica based build)?
          2)Which race is better?
          Thank you for any clue

  39. Joey on February 7, 2015 at 8:38 pm

Hey Deltia, just started playing eso again after a long ass break, finding it impossible to find dungs so I’m switching up from my dps aoe fire staff build and looking to go tanky, currently v4 and don’t wanna do any dungs without decent tank gear, what set gear do you suggest until i can get the epic ones?

    • Deltia on February 8, 2015 at 4:15 pm

Hist Bark is very good and any set bonus with rings. You’ll be fine for a long time with just that.

  40. PhilMox on February 7, 2015 at 8:41 pm

That build is absolute awesome. Today i switched my DK DD to this build cause in our guild we needed a tank. That was the best choice. I’m only in the mid 30’s but i can handle almost every boss and dolmen fight alone. Actually i use the hist bark set (5 pieces) and the way of the arena set (4 pieces) and it goes really good.
Thank you for this real good build. It’s easy to play and nearly impossible to kill.

  41. sickboy2808 on February 10, 2015 at 12:35 pm

Hi there im using this guide for my tank and would like to know is it suitable for Coa Vet?? I keep failing at Ash Titan as my stam gets destroyed real quick. Is there s head and shoulder set i could replace yours with for more stam?? I dont have spindle set

    • Deltia on February 10, 2015 at 2:55 pm

Well, I almost solo’d the Ash Titan on live with this build. I got it down to 40% on stream so yeah it’s doable. You need a healer that supports you or a Templar dropping spears for stamina.

      • sickboy2808 on February 11, 2015 at 10:26 am

You need show me how its done lol. Already had 2 failed runs and that Titan is making me angry ha

        • Deltia on February 11, 2015 at 2:12 pm

Who’s healing you? A Templar? If not, then you’ll have to rely on GDB. Also you can dodge roll the fire spit to save you some damage.

  42. sickboy2808 on February 12, 2015 at 8:32 am

I think she is and to be fair she is amazing healer always knows whats she doing and even knows what ive to do ha.. Im trying farm that helm this week to help me but no luck so far..my group go 2 last night but not me lol

Wow man that sounds like my kinda class. I won’t be playing until console release but I watch a lot of your vids and I was wondering how is this build looking in 1.6?

  45. Desolationz on March 1, 2015 at 6:00 pm

Hello Deltia, Will this build be updated for 1.6 or have you personally abandoned this build?

  46. John on March 3, 2015 at 3:55 am

What do you think about running Undaunted bastion instead of hist bark? would that not work better for when you are taunting?

    • Deltia on March 3, 2015 at 9:52 am

Yeah that’s a great question. Good suggestion, I’m going to look into it. Focusing on the warrior bubble tree would be interesting.

  47. SkipQ on March 5, 2015 at 3:21 am

First off, I have been using this build (Although I used Imperial race) and I have enjoyed it. So I have to offer you my thanks. I am now level 45 and had thought to use this up through the Vet ranks as well. My question is a follow-up to Desolationsz. Have you tested this build in 1.6. if so have you made changes, or are you going to abandon the build? I was just about to spec the build again now that we have to re-spec but thought I would ask.

    • Deltia on March 5, 2015 at 11:18 pm

No I have not tested and no I am not going to abandon it. It just takes a long time to finish a build. I can put out samples that suck and aren’t effective, or I can take a week to make something ironclad that works. So, it’ll take me some time to update it.

  48. Aedral on March 5, 2015 at 6:20 am

this is pretty awesome man. i just started using it today. im vet rank 7 and it seems like its really solid for me. i need to do like one more dungeon to get my inner fire so im using fragmented sheild in its place for a lil extra buff and dmg. im also using whitestrakes retribution 4 piece until i get to be able to get footmans and bloodguise. should i go with somethin other than whitestrakes when i make my vet 8 gear. also is it viable to use sheild assault instead of chains? i just really like charging in lol.

    • Deltia on March 5, 2015 at 11:21 pm

Whitestrakes is a good set for people wearing light armor or not at end game. And Shield Assault is a good choice but chains in so valuble for group play. If you’re soloing, go Invasion.

      • Aedral on March 8, 2015 at 6:16 am

thanks man. the chains have grown on me. I was able to solo soulfire plateau with this build and in the one i was using before i couldnt. i just got to do one more dungeon to have inner fire to finish it out. some morphs i have arent the ones ill be using endgame im just lvlin em while im on my way to max vet rank. ill be tryin out your build for the nb as well. also is it imperative to be a werewolf for end game or can you get by just fine without? i had never planned for this toon to be a werewolf in my rp.

        • Deltia on March 8, 2015 at 9:45 pm

Not imperative, but can help your stamina regen.

  49. sickboy2808 on March 6, 2015 at 12:40 pm

I finally got my Blood helm then they go change everything ha..cant wait till u update this build for us but can you please include where you spend your CP as im saving them so i can follow this build again..TYVM

  50. capn783 on March 10, 2015 at 2:11 pm

Hi Deltia. I am new to ESO and want to go DK tank for endgame so I am following this guide. Hopefully it will stay accurate for 1.6. I have a couple questions if that is ok. My first question is that I rolled an orc because my friends play DC. People are telling me on the eso forums that was a big mistake and that I should reroll as an imperial or nord. Problem is I am level 11 already which for this game is quite a large amount of hours leveling wise. Can this build work well if I am an orc or are they right and I should reroll?

My second question is about leveling. I know you said to roll resto staff until you can get green dragon blood. Should I be switching in my sword and shield at all to try and gain skill or just start fresh at 0 when I finally get dragons blood. I know it depends on the situation but what skills/passives should I be priortizing while leveling? One problem I am having is knowing when to spend points on passives/skills outside of my main 3 skill lines. Thanks for your help.

    • Deltia on March 11, 2015 at 1:54 pm

Yes, the Orc is just fine. I’d probably just start out fresh. Leveling, focus on a few active skills than passive skills.

  51. capn783 on March 11, 2015 at 7:40 pm

Ok thank you Deltia. I will do that.

  52. LadyK on March 15, 2015 at 9:10 pm

With the patch changes, do you have any idea what stats we should be shooting for with this build. How much health? How much stam? Ect. Much appreciated.

    • Deltia on March 15, 2015 at 9:13 pm

      20k health, rest magicka.

  53. capn783 on March 16, 2015 at 4:08 pm

Hi Deltia. I have one more question. I was reading your guide and under the armor section you mentioned that you were wrong about heavy armor and that it is legit now and has good resource return. I was wondering what you meant by that? Do you mean you can rock full heavy armor now or should we still be aiming for the 5/2 heavy/light split? Thank you.

  54. Mysteri0n on March 17, 2015 at 10:48 pm

  68. karaiv on May 6, 2015 at 2:20 pm

Why don’t you use your blue cp on Blessed? It increases your self healing, it even increases the healing you get if you use a master 1h-sword.

    • Deltia on May 7, 2015 at 6:51 pm

I’ve changed it since just need to update the build.

  69. Erik Ironskin on May 6, 2015 at 9:43 pm

So are there any advantages to using full heavy vs 1/1/5 first off? Does the lost armor/health regen/a bit of resources restored when hit affect durability negatively in a noticeable way? If there really aren’t, what pieces should I use light and medium? I’ve heard waist and hands but the hands hold the only divines piece of footman that I can wear assuming I’m wearing a 2pc undaunted set. Waist I can easily do. I assume feet or shoulders would be the second best to hands but I need the feet for an exploration footman piece (I don’t want exploration on a major piece). Does this mean I should be on the lookout for a medium engine guardian or bloodspawn shoulder piece?
Also, I’ve heard varying opinions on reinforced vs infused on major pieces. I think I saw you using reinforced on your greaves, is this the superior trait then?
Sorry for the wall of text, but I’m about to hit V14 and these are the things I need to know. Figured you’d be the best to answer them 🙂

    • Deltia on May 7, 2015 at 6:54 pm

Yes, more stats, probably not anymore, head shoulders undaunted, yes, no nirn.

  72. Tyler Akridge on May 28, 2015 at 4:14 pm

What are the Champion points that you use? You didn’t mention that!

  73. Michael on May 29, 2015 at 9:25 am

Hey man, I have been trying to PvE tank with my Templar but in all honesty it just feels like sticking a square peg in a round hole, far too scared to go near PvP with it. The toon is an imp and a V3 at the moment, I just can’t get the feel for it, magic or stam DPS is easy mode but I am a tank at heart and get bored of face melting jesus beams and RSI WB’s after about a week. I also run a level 40 DK tank in Non Vet PvP in a different faction, only have 28 champ points so it’s not too much of a gimp, but I understand that I will have an advantage over players with none but it’s so much easier to survive on the DK than it is the Temp.

Narrative over my question is, can a Templar tank (5 heavy/2 Light) compete as well as DK in endgame and PVP, should I cut my losses and focus on the DK and push him onto endgame. Having read your DK and Temp tanking guides and reading through the lines of your experiences it feels like you favour the DK.

    • Deltia on May 30, 2015 at 4:26 pm

PvP tanking? I don’t know but probably not. You don’t have Talors or flappers.

  75. Rhys on June 27, 2015 at 6:14 am

Dude I love this build, I love tanking in general so I chose to take on this build, im level 30 tanking/soloing bosses (friends chose vamp and taking high dmg) in 40 city of ash

  76. Nemo on June 29, 2015 at 8:33 pm

I guess I misread something. I want to tank with my DK. One section tell’s me to allocate my attributes 22 health 20 magicka and 20 stamina. Another seems to say health 27 and magicka 35?
    <——very confused

    • Deltia on July 1, 2015 at 10:20 pm

Attributes aren’t very important honestly. Find a spot that suits you. I change them constantly.

I am veteran rank 10 at the moment, Tank build for my guild. I have gone a health/ spell & physical resistance build. I have 34k Health, 23.5k Spell Resistance and 29k Physical Resistance. Without using potions or food or any buffs. I use hist bark and two other different sets.

My group which has a healer, 2 x DPS and myself have completed every vet dungeon with ease. Currently doing speed runs.

Anything at end game you would recommend for my build? Im thinking footmans set when i hit VR14.

    Cheers

What I recommend for tanking is contained in this article.

Essentially, this build works great with any race but the one you mentioned is the most optimal for this build right?! So I could go argonian with it and make due?

  82. Charles on July 24, 2015 at 7:48 pm

Deltia, iI have followed your buuild for quite some time adding in some tweaks here and there for solo play (soloing all of craglorn as we speak except those dam group doors). I was wondering what gear set you recomend to go along with hist bark in my pursuit of footmans. I am currently using 4 deatths wind and 5 HB. please help! VR 14 Imp DK tank for life.

Where are you getting the 4 percent stamina from casting cinder storm from?

All it says is Summon a scorching cloud of ash at the target location, dealing 0 Fire Damage to nearby enemies every 0.5 seconds.
Also reduces enemies’ Movement Speed 70% for <> even if they leave the area.

The passive Mountain Blessing gives back Stamina on cast of active abilities from Earthen Heart tree. That is where you stamina 4%.

Why are your stats so much more.. Condensed? I play an altmer dk on ps4, V2, and i have 22,000 health.

For this Build how did you allocate your attribute points?

  89. Jose on February 26, 2016 at 4:25 pm

    Deltas I have 2 question
    1) does this build also work with orcs or should I choose a different race
2)if a Orc work should the skills and points be the same as the video

    • Deltia on February 27, 2016 at 11:48 pm

It can work on any race, yes.

    Hi deltia
Is nord or imperial better for pvp with this build

    • Deltia on April 13, 2016 at 3:47 pm

Imperial is great for massive stats.

Love your work! I found a home with this build and I am extremely happy. I am wondering where to put all my champion points to maximize this tank?

    • Deltia on September 4, 2016 at 4:21 pm

      There’s a CP layout below.

      • Bill C on September 4, 2016 at 6:05 pm

I am not following??? Obviously I am looking in the wrong places. Where is your breakdown for cp? please.

        • Bill C on September 4, 2016 at 6:11 pm

          found it … thanks.

        • Deltia on September 6, 2016 at 12:37 am

That post is old prior to CP, the very top of the page has a bold notice to go to another one here: http://deltiasgaming.com/eso-dragonknight-tank-build/

Thank you. I have seen this updated post but have a tough time since I am not in any guild and not all of my crafting is finished. That is why the older post has gotten me to end game, doc content.

  93. Emirhan on December 9, 2017 at 12:30 am

Why you changed this guide? Please include the old one. I was constructing the Four Mans Tank with Baharas Curse. please 🙂

    • Deltia on December 11, 2017 at 5:54 pm

Because that setup isn’t that effective any longer. When that build was posted, Bahara’s could crit heal and scaled very well which was nerfed with all proc sets. Also Tava’s doesn’t work as well now that you can’t access medium armor skill without five medium armor.
