Europa Universalis 5 was released around a week ago to glowing reviews. Its prequel, EU4, was released in 2013 but received continuous expansions over the years. And now, EU5 is finally here, and it has brought many upgrades. There is no shortage of things for you to do in EU5 (it is a very complex game after all).

But once you are done with it, if you enjoyed it, you may look for similar games. Well, look no further. Here are 5 games for you to play after finishing Europa Universalis 5 (EU5).

Here are five games that you can try after finishing EU5:

  • Anno 1800
  • Total War Series
  • Hearts of Iron IV
  • Crusader Kings III
  • Civilization VI

Anno 1800

As the name suggests, Anno 1800 is set in the 19th century, in the middle of the Industrial Age. It is admittedly divergent from EU5 in some ways, mainly in that EU5 has you control an international empire, while Anno is a city-building sim.

However, they are more similar than they are different. After all, managing a nation is quite similar to managing a city, just on a larger scale. You must develop your regions, implement different policies, obtain enough resources, battle opposing forces, and more. If you liked EU5, it is worth giving Anno 1800 and its soon-to-be-released sequel a shot.

Total War Series

The Total War series has over a dozen games, each of which has a different setting. The Total War series contains large-scale geopolitical campaigns and real-time tactical battles. It is far more focused on the military aspects of running a nation (or any other force).

As each of the games has a different setting, you can play whichever you want, though the gameplay does differ. With that said, Total War: Warhammer III is one of the best modern options.

Hearts of Iron IV

Another game by Paradox Interactive, Hearts of Iron IV, is one of the most complex grand strategy games of all time. Set during World War II, you may play as any nation during that turbulent time, and change the course of history with your actions.

Players must manage every imaginable aspect of controlling a nation during wartime. These include maintaining the economy, producing an effective military, managing inter- and intranational relations, and more. The game’s depth might be a little overwhelming, but that adds to the fun.

Crusader Kings III

Crusader Kings III is another grand strategy game by Paradox, just like Hearts of Iron IV and EU5. The difference is in its setting, which is during the Middle Ages. Crusader Kings III is easier to learn than Hearts of Iron IV, but it is just as fun.

If you like EU5, then Crusader Kings III might just be the game for you.

Civilization VI

Sid Meier’s Civilization series is one of the most well-known game series of all time. And for good reason. The idea of leading your own little tribe/kingdom/nation to global domination has universal appeal. It is no wonder as to the game is so popular.

While Civilization VI is not the newest game in the series, it is widely considered better than Civilization VII. For this reason, if you’re going to try any Civilization game, then Civilization VI is your best shot.

Those were five games to play after finishing Europa Universalis 5.
