Wondrous Patch, a new Item card from the Phantasmal Flames expansion of the Pokemon TCG, looks ready to disrupt the meta.

The Wondrous Patch is a Trainer card from the Phantasmal Flames. It’s an Item card that will let you attach a Basic Psychic Energy card from your discard pile to a Benched Psychic Pokemon. Seeing that Gardevoir ex decks already employ a similar strategy that has made this deck the most dominant in the meta, it’s worth looking at how this new card will shake the meta.

Why Use Wondrous Patch in Pokemon TCG Decks?

Wondrous Patch’s appeal (and the appeal of Patch cards in general) is that it lets you attach more than one Energy card to your Pokemon per turn. Usually, you can only attach a single Energy from your hand to a Pokemon of your choice. As such, when a card like Crispin or Xatu from Paradox Rift lets you attach another Energy card, they remain useful picks.

Additionally, Patch cards are Item cards. This means you can play more than one per turn. So with some careful preparation you could set up and unleash a powerful Psychic Attacker with multiple Wondrous Patch cards.

Has Wondrous Patch Seen Play in Japan’s City Leagues?

Currently, Wondrous Patch is seeing decent play in Japan’s City Leagues before it gets officially released worldwide. As a card benefitting Psychic-type Pokemon, naturally, it has seen a lot of play in decks featuring them.

The most common of these is the deck focusing on Alakazam from Mega Evolution. Besides that, Slowking from Stellar Crown, which also runs the aforementioned Xatu, has also utilized Wondrous Patch extremely efficiently. Even uncommon picks like Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex from Destined Rivals and Iron Valiant ex from Paradox Rift have seen a small resurgence thanks to Wondrous Patch.

Surprisingly, Gardevoir ex decks are not using this card much at all. This makes sense as this archetype also utilizes Gardevoir ex’s ability to damage the Pokemon the Energy gets attached to. Which is then used to power Pokemon like Scream Tail or Munkidori. So, Wonder Patch seems unlikely at this point to be used in those decks.

It will be interesting to see how Wondrous Patch affects the meta. After all, Ceruledge ex went from a niche meta deck to a top-tier one thanks to the new Solrock and Lunatone cards. So, do not be surprised if a new archetype emerges thanks to Wondrous Patch.
