At the start of Europa Universalis 5 (EU5), not every location on the map will be visible, and so, you will have to perform a lot of exploration before you can start interacting with neighboring nations. This will let you form various pacts with allies or declare war and form colonies.

Regardless of your future goal, exploration will remain a major task for you to master. Without exploration, making proper progress will be next to impossible.

Exploration Requirements in Europa Universalis 5 (EU5)

As mentioned above, you cannot see any nearby countries as they are unknown and/or unexplored territory. You will have to send out two forms of expeditions to discover new lands and resources. Both of these will require different resources, as detailed below:

  • Naval Exploration: 100 Ducats, 250 Sailors
  • Land Exploration: 100 Ducats, 250 Manpower

Furthermore, you will incur a monthly cost to keep the expedition going. You should be ready with a good amount of money to fund expeditions.

If your nation is landlocked, then you will likely utilize Land Exploration over Naval Exploration. The type of expedition that will be most beneficial will depend on various geopolitical factors. Lastly, you must ensure that the target location lies within your colonial range.

Benefits of Exploration in EU5

The first and foremost reward from this activity is the unlocking of nearby areas to interact with. However, you cannot reap the benefits of the expedition until your expedition safely makes it back.

If your expedition is successful, you will have a positive effect on your people, while the reverse is also true.
