ESO Dragonknight Tank for Update 7

It’s time to redefine tanking with the new updated T7.  With the changes to stamina regeneration while blocking, tank is still possible and I’m going to show you how in this ESO Dragonknight Tank for Update 7 guide.

UPDATED BUILD FOR THIEVES GUILD HERE

Objective

sewerThe goal of T7 is that people can use this as a template in order to compensate for the lack of stamina regeneration in Update 7 Imperial City.  My usual tank setup used magicka with high stamina regeneration through champion points and drinks over food.  This build does the opposite, using high stamina pool, massive reduce block cost and powerful ultimate regeneration to active the all important Battle Roar passive.

The new stamina change might be controversial, but it’s not crippling.  I also want something that players can pick up easy, without farming gear for hours or the need of PvP sets.  The downside of the build is it relies on high champion points to compensate for lack of resource regeneration.  You can still play it with low CP (sub 200), but you won’t be able to pull off all the tricks. Another downside is the need for the PvP Caltrops (Razor morph).  It acts as such a strong AoE taunt that it cannot be avoid.

However, the build can hold up to the new content WITH the old gear sets, skills and near setup.  With this build be the “BEST TANK EVER 2015?”  Probably not, but if you want to get through the two new Veteran Dungeons, you can with T7.

Resources via Ultimates +  Reduce block cost via champion points and armor + Max resistance through skills = new tanking

Skills

T7 Dragonknight Skill BarsT7 Dragonknight Passive skills

Sword and Shield One

  • Extended Chains (morph of Fiery Grip | Ardent Flame skill line) – This is a pull AND a leap essentially.  It’s great for pulling in mobs than quickly taunting them or pulling yourself to a target that cannon be stunned (like a boss).  “Rip and grip” it’s the reason we love DK tanks.
  • Pierce Armor (morph of Puncture | One-Hand and Shield skill line) – A powerful debuff and a single target taunt makes this ability a must have.  I like the added spell resistance debuff Pierce Armor provides making the morph choice of my tank.
  • Choking Talons (morph of Dark Talons | Draconic Power skill line) – This acts as a AoE root and damage debuff to the enemies.  I prefer this morph for pure tanking and it’s ability to control mobs on the battlefield is second to none.
  • Defensive Stance (morph of Defensive Posture | One-Hand and Shield skill line) – Reducing block cost and increasing block mitigation is essential for a pure DK tank.  It also acts as a Engine Guardian proc tool spam casting this to get a flood of resources.
  • Coagulating Blood (morph of Dragon Blood | Draconic Power skill line) – A powerful self heal that also gives a minor vitality buff for extra healing received.  Since I run Tri-potions with alchemy passive of Medicinal Use, I no longer need Green Dragon Blood.

Sword and Shield Two

  • Hardened Armor (morph of Spiked Armor | Draconic Power skill line) – This is our main buff to maintain for major spell resistance and armor.  It also gives us a powerful health shield to start combat and returns physical damage.
  • Inner Fire (no morph needed | Undaunted skill line) – A magicka based range taunt that is useful if we’re low on stamina.  If you have tons of stamina, go for the stamina based morph but I play it safe.
  • Razor Caltrops (morph of Caltrops | Alliance War Assault skill line) – A massive AoE snare which acts like a taunt.  It’s my primary way to hold agro on a large group of mobs.  If you don’t PvP, use Eruption as a substitute (morph of Ash Cloud | Earthen Heart skill line).
  • Heroic Slash (morph of Low Slash | One-Hand and Shield skill line) – This is a single target damage debuff and hits pretty hard single target. It also generates a bit of ultimate over time essential to our resource regeneration.
  • Igneous Shields (morph of Obsidian Shield | Earthen Heart skill line) – A minor shield that gives us back stamina, ultimate and 5% weapon power, yeah it’s a must have.

Rotation and Use

Buff with Defensive Stance, Hardened Armor, Igneous shields and Coagulating Blood, throw Caltrops while closing the gap, taunt with Pieces Armor and debuff with Heroic Slash.  Now go into buff/debuff cycle.

Primary Buffs –  Hardened Armor to reach hard cap in resistance.  Other buffs to maintain is Mountains Blessing (20 seconds) Defensive Stance and Coagulating Blood.

Primary Debuffs – Heroic Slash for single target, Choking Talons for area or multiple mobs and Pierce Armor.

Extra Magicka – Use Blood and Igneous Shields to get ultimate.

Extra Stamina – Place Razor Caltrops down, Heroic Slash and Defensive Stance.

Gear

T7 Dragonknight Tank Gear Chart

  • Footman – Comes from Dragonstar Arena (VR 13 normal VR 14 vet).
  • Hist Bark – Craftable four trait found here: Greenshade Rootwatch Tower, Rivenspire Trader’s Rest and Shadowfen Hatchling’s Crown.
  • Engine Guardian – Helm from Darkshade Cavern, Shoulders through Undaunted.

Alternatives – Alessia’s Bulwark is a good craftable set that can be used at any level.  Soulshine and Unassailable and Akaviri Dragonguard are decent drop sets while leveling.

Champion Points

T7 Champion Points

Priorities

  • Blessed in the Mage for more healing
  • Block Expert in the Warrior for reduce block cost
  • Magician for reduce magicka cost

Miscellaneous

  • Attributes – all stamina (64).
  • Werewolf/Vampire – Neither since I don’t use their abilities.
  • Mundus – Atronach for more casting though Warrior is good for DPS focused stamina build.
  • Races – 1) Imperial 2) Dunmer 3) Nord.

Will X race work with Y build

Generally yes.  I’ve stamina DPS on a Nord and  magicka tanked on a Khajiit.  It can be done, but it won’t be optimal.  If you’re asking for advice, tank those three races ideally, but anything with more health, magicka and stamina can work.

hey deltia. big fan. I like most of your builds and they’re usually my go to guides for leveling or whatever. my only question with this build is , for someone who doesn’t have near as many champion points as you do (sub 100)…. noob hype, what would be the most beneficial to my build? I notice you have around 30k health and 24k stam with attributes completely in stam. but my character comes no where near that … and I have a 5 piece foot man and 5 piece histbark… ( just need the engine guardian) I still need to throw a few health enchants on some pieces but I don’t think that’s gonna make up the ground I seem to be missing… any suggestions would help. thanks!

I’m interested to know the answer to this too. I have 225 CP, all legendary v16 gear, and Footman v13-15 purple/legendary pieces. I use Divines/Infused with ALL health enchants. If I have no AP into HP, my health is 25k, I usually throw 24 points into HP to take me to 28-29k. I’m a nord, and I use drinks.

I’m also curious as to what you think between stamina for tankiness, and magicka for DPSTankiness. Most people are saying magicka is better for PvE, but I feel squisher and am not surethe DPS boost is wort it.

You don’t need stam regen because if you constantly block, which you should do as a tank, you don’t regen stam anyways. So having high stam regen is pointless, you could use those champion points into some else more useful.

Hey delta. I’m just curious if you think it’s ok to use a 5 piece VR 14 footman and a 5 piece VR 16 histbark. Or should I trade up the footmans for a new vr16 set and if so what set??

Yeah, you can have 100k health and 3k stamina. That does nothing for you, because you need to taunt, keep mobs off other players not just sit with health and do nothing.

Hey Deltia love the work you do but seeing how it’s get a “giant stamina pool” would the Imperial be a great race for this kinda new tank idea because of the 10% more Stam and the Heal? Or would a different race be better?

Definitely, he does list Imperial as his #1 race. With the change in Stamina recovery, the more Stamina the better and no other race can compete with the Imperial in that regard.

Hah! I was in the process of levelling a full health, T3 style tank before the patch notes. Didn’t get very far, so only 14 points in health. Is it worth a respec for 100% stamina? I’m thinking a few points health couldn’t hurt, right?

Hey Deltia, I’m wondering if I should re-roll my Dunmer DK to this build. He’s VR6 right now, from following your Laceration build. But I’ve been interested in building a Tank for a while. Just wanted to make sure if it would be a good idea to do it now, or wait till I’m VR14, or if it even mattered when I wanted to do it.

I just got my hands on some Nirnhoned 1hand Sword and Shield as well, so that would help a bunch.

I didn’t see any emperorship bonus on your character either. Nor do you use Lord Mundus stone. If you could tell me how you get that much health, I would greatly appreciate it.

Yeah I noted the 24.7k in the gameplay footage but when you are explaining the change of shifting to max stamina in the first 3-4 mins of the video your health shows as 30k, like before the war horn use its 30k and jumps to 33k after use of the horn.

Is it a buff of sorts for being in imperial city?

Thanks a lot for doing this Guide. It is a Kick in the Ass for all Crybabys in the official Forums.
It is almost the same Build i was running with my Imperial DK Tank in the last Months and the same Changes i have in Mind after running my first Dungeon on the PTS.
I use Balance from Mages Guild instead of Caltrops to restore Magica for the Magica based Abilitys and to taunt with Inner Rage if low on Stamina. You have to use it with care or told your Healer if you wanna use it but you can save your or your Groups Ass in many Situations.
I often use it at Trashgroups to keep the Enemys at me with perma Caltrops and Chains.

Deltia, Im interested if you have had a chance to test the Black Rose set? With end game gear/sword and board/fortress/absorb magic etc.. Im sure you can get the cost of block well below 780. Meaning that you could ultimately get 2x-3x the stam back you got from blocking than you spent doing it (sounds like stam regen from blocking 20% of the time lol). This may allow you to swap some points back to Health/Magica. Would also be great for AOE trash packs. The only negative is fully mitigating all damage by dodging. But when ever i dodge i look at it like stam saved, not health saved. As you demonstrated, if i need a quick heal IS+GDB+Tri Pot and your all set. What are your thoughts?

Deltia, another great guide! I do have a couple questions though about tanking in general.
    1) You refer in several of your guides to soft and hard caps for resistances, what are these numbers exactly?
    2) in regards to hit points, regeneration, and resistances, what would you consider good goal numbers for different stages of the game? Say vr1/vr5/vr10/vr14/vr16 for example.
    3) with the stamina changes, would you change how you prioritize statistical values over your previous tank builds?

Thanks for your time. I really look forward to a response. Happy gaming!

No soft caps in game, 33,000 spell resist and armor.
I don’t know as I don’t concern myself with those numbers until end game. I’m 100% focused on leveling.
I mention that in the video, stamina.

    Thank you, Deltia, very inspiring.
But I’ve a question about the Rotation and Use.
I wonder if this is handy: “Buff with Defensive Stance, Hardened Armor, Igneous shields and Coagulating Blood, throw Caltrops while closing the gap, taunt with Pieces Armor and debuff with Heroic Slash. Now go into buff/debuff cycle.”
Main rotation over seven skills requiring five bar swaps?
Defensive Stance -> swap bar -> Hardened Armor, Igneous shields -> swap bar -> Coagulating Blood -> swap bar -> Caltrops -> swap bar -> Pieces Armor -> swap bar -> Heroic Slash
I’m a noob, I would like to know the secret of this 🙂

Perhaps it was an earlier tanking guide you made, but I think you said that resistant (from crits)slot for champion points is useless in PVE. I thought this wasn’t true because mobs can crit…

There seems to be confusion on this..

Does “resistant” really only benefit PVP? I thought mobs/bosses could crit according to combat logs? There seems to be confusion on this.

You want to use food to boost your health or all health glyphs with drinks to boost your regen.

Was hoping for a reply on the testing of the Black Rose set. With block reduction thru talents and gear its possible to get block cost to around 250 stam (maybe less). With 1 out of every 5 (5 piece 20% chance) blocks returning 780 stam, those 5 blocks only cost 470 stam. Thats approximately 63% stam regen while blocking.

I have nearly the same exact gear as you in this vid (all except sholders). All purple enchants for max HP and all the big pieces of armor(head, leg, chest, shield) upgraded to legendary. All this puts me at about 24.5k hp WITH food. I think the difference is your champ points..

One thing I’ve noticed is that this relies heavily on CP to compensate for what you lack from gear and passives. As a console player who hasn’t had enough time to earn nearly that much CP, is this still a viable build? If not, what should I prioritize?

Since your playing on console your build isnt being played on the new patch that nerfs stam regen and warewolf.. Which is what Deltias build specifically addresses.. Given your running around in v5 gear also leads me to believe you arent tanking end game content, and most likely arent v14 yourself. In short, the build you detail above will be obsolete when the new update hits on the 15th/16th..

A good replacement to vigor would be deep breath the morph of inhale because what it does is it provide a heal and does a large amount of aoe damage after 2.5 seconds of casting it. Good aggro grabber. Then eruption, the morph of ash cloud is good, it doesn’t have a heal but an aoe aggro grabber. Then if you use the armor master gear set, which isn’t specified in the build I would use something like harness magicka the morph of annulment or evasion which will give you an epic armor boost from the 5 point passive literally turning you into a walking wall.

Standard of Might definitely because it has a huge aoe in which the enemies recieve major defile (20% reduced healing), and damage dealt is increased by 17% for anyone inside and damage recieved is reduced by 17% for anyone inside. So it’s a great offensive ultimate but also has nice defences to it too. Also with the battle roar it will increase stats like crazy!

          • Kfro says

            October 4, 2015 at 6:06 PM

Well to grab tons of adds inhale and ash cloud are really good. Annulment is way better single target fights with magicka bosses. And evasion is really good with heavy adds fight due to 20% dodge chance.

          • Jt says

            October 4, 2015 at 6:29 PM

So really it sounds like there isn’t one definite winner that I should use all the time. Rather, switch out based on the fight. That’s a little tedious. Thank you for your help getting this figured out.

i was wondering. After watching you do vet dsa with your dark elf dragon knight i was hugely impressed by its damage and /tankieness
im about to start one now on xb1AD, but the question is is there any point in me trying to make a dps/tank in this update?
    is it null?
and also why dark elf for a tank build as second choice? is it for the fire increase? or the resist?

Anyways, I’m only VR4 and all I’m trying to do is sword and board my way to higher VR levels. Can you truly level with this build? I mean go out, questing, etc while running solo? I feel like dumping all my points in Stamina has either made me super squishy in fights with multiple mobs OR I don’t die but a fight with me vs 3-4 PVE enemies last like 1 minute – 90 seconds 🙁

Hey man big fan of the builds you post. I’ve been using this build to the T other then engine guardian, (haven’t got the set yet) but one thing I’ve been looking at is the armor master set, I think that it would make your resistance go out the roof if you used the heavy armor ability instead of harden armor. Only issue is finding a 9 trait crafter on xbox. But I’d like your thoughts on it.

Yeah Armor Master with Elude slotted is the best choice. However, it requires a lot of cool down watching which you lack on the consoles. It’s a better tank setup, but not an easier one.

Salutations, Deltia, I love your builds and I am trying hard to be just like you as it were. But I am Nord while you are a Dark Elf. My question is concerning the passive skills. I have noticed there is a few that I am not willing to get such as : Burning Heat II, Flame Talent II, Flame Resist III, and Dynamic III..which I think there all for DE lines. What would you suggest I use in to replace those? I have all the others you have listed…

No, tanking solo is very slow. I’d go with Burning Butcher or Laceration. Tanks are pretty much non-existent in PvP.

Deltia I am a huge fan and appreciate the time you take to read and respond to most sensible comments. With orsinium jewelry sets in play do you find the glorious defender or permafrost set stacking with elude better than footmans (due to the diminishing returns approaching the armor cap)? I also have a 7 month old at the house and wish you and yours a healthy and happy new year!

Right so I love a good tank build, and I really respect your knowledge of esotu Deltia…but me being a tank I just can’t get past the fact that you have no points invested into health (you know that thing that keeps your character alive) and I’d understand it a bit more if you had more magicka to use green dragons blood to just heal yourself through it. But then again the more HP you have the bigger the health pool you regain so investing 0 points into health I just don’t know about that. Perhaps if you used health enchantments I suppose? Look the point I’m trying to get across is that while blocking is all good and very affective at times it’s not always the answer (I’m talking about your huge Stam pool) I have a healer friend who brought up a very good point when we were in a group in imperial city with a few others and this was after we fought the boss she went on to say (after she got a bad rap for “not healing good enough”) “it’s not my fault if you guys stand in the aoe’s but I also can’t heal you for what you guys don’t have” she was talking about their HP and there lack of being able to take a hit. Now it’s just my opinion but I think a “tank” should be able to take a hit without always needing his or her shield up that’s what makes a tank a tank not having to rely on spells or Stam just their extraordinary Health pool and armor+spell risistance. For example my guy has (after he’s eaten food and with the Cyrodiil 5k health boost even though I’m vet16) 53k health 18k Stam 15k magicka and 2k weapon damage which can be buffed up +40% damage on heavy attacks and +150% on targets below 50% health. What he lacks in Stam and magicka he makes up for with tri potions and shear strength (the ability to outlast people) and if I ever get in a sticky situation I just use my Werewolf transformation to finish them off. Forme it’s all about playing smart looking for your opponents weakness (everybody has one) timing, and knowing what ability to use for the situation you find yourself in. Also I only have 300cp and I do just fine and my guys managed 3 sets (kinda seeing as how my deaths wind set has all 5 working, my ashen grip has only 4 active, and my endurance set has all two active lol)

Sorcs in particular please, some people I’ve played with find it to be “OP” and I’ll admit I do aswell at times I was just wondering what your thoughts were on it and if you have any recommendations on how to better combate these goes for someone like me who uses sword and shield. As of now I’ve gotten better at fighter them (kinda) but every time I get into a 1v 1 with a shield stacking sorc I let out a big sigh and give Myself! a face palm for thinking the sorc may not use them. I think when it comes down to it though you may just have to play smart and carefully? Idk I’ve tried and done all I can do I was just wondering if you had any advice (and what your thoughts are on sorc shield stacking)

          • Deltia says

            February 4, 2016 at 2:25 PM

Shield Stacking Sorcs are very powerful, but people don’t know how to deal with them. Stuns/Immobilizes that’s it. If a shield stacking Sorc sits and stacks, guess what, they’re doing zero damage to you. Keep pressure on them.

I haven’t really played eso much since before imperial city was released. I’m trying to get back into endgame tanking now, is this build still viable, or is there a new tanking meta?

Let me start by saying, nice build 😀
I do have a question about your champion points. You spend 100 points in “Apprentice – Blessed” but you spend 0 points in “Lord – Quick Recovery” (the first option increases the healing you initiate and the second increases effectiveness of healing received). At 16:10 in your video you say that the absolute best thing to do is to up “Blessed” (compared to the other blue options). Did you leave out “Quick Recovery” because you think “Blessed” is enough, or because you “needed” to spend the “red” points into the other options? Or does “Quick Recovery” not work on self heal (i thought it did)?

Quick question – I don’t know if it has been answered yet… For Armor Master – should I just run a 4 piece set since you don’t have any armor abilities slotted? Or is it better to run 5 and slot an armor ability, and if so, what should I swap out?
Also, what do you think about 4 piece AM, 5 piece Histbark and 3 piece Endurance (rings and amulet)?

The second option, I don’t find value in 4 pc AM, I’d stick to 5/5.

Hi, Deltia! I just started playing again, I like tanking and I’m following this build. But I have one question. Until I can get Agressive Horn (I don’t know if I’m gonna get it at all, cuz I suck at PVP :D), what should my ultimate be on the first bar?

What level difference makes armor stop being feasible? I had a V13 Engine Guardian helm drop for me today and am curious how that will compare to a V16 helmet of set X. With cake out now I assume I will level cap this week.
Is there a breakdown on the math you would use to calculate that? Would it be worth just grinding the caverns again when I hit 16?

    Good day,
With the new thieves guild update and all the changes the DK recieved, especially with Igneous weapons, how and/or would you incorporate Igneous Weapons in the skills. All these skills are great and hard to replace, but I feel that igneous weapons is almost a must need and can’tfigure out if its worth while to replace one of these skills.

Yeah it’s a good question. I need to revamp this build which I’m doing using Tava’s Blessing and Glorious Defender. It’ll be new focused on offense and Warhorn. The DK has so many good skills I’ll need some time testing what I can and cannot drop. Igneous Weapons will be one of them and maybe Engulfing Flames as well.

I am currently using this build for my tank and love it. i also don’t have razor caltrops yet so I put Igneous Weapons in its place, but once I get caltrops I don’t know what I will do. Engulfing flames would be great, especially if you have a Dunmer DK magicka dps in the group. Flame damage for the win. What are your thoughts about Mark of the Pariah? I am currently Trying to get that and would like to go 5pc Hist Bark, 5pc Pariah, and Engine Guardian helm set.

Also keep up the good work. you put in a lot of effort putting these builds together to help out the ESO community. I can only imagine what it’s like having to create new characters, deleting some, testing builds, etc. You have my respect and thank you for everything you do. If you ever find yourself on PS4, I wouldn’t mind playing with you sometime. I also understand how busy you are. But keep it man, great work!

Caltrops isn’t really needed (if you must have an AOE, Eruption is good enough) – I’d rather have Vigor on my bar. Taunt, pull and talons works as a great rotation. Igneous weapons is key as well, especially on boss fights in the tougher dungeons.

BTW- my guild right now is 5pc histbark, 4 pc Armor master with 3 pc. Endurance. We have a great Tmplar healer who doesn’t let me run out of Stam (just pop potions on long boss fights). It also helps to have Inner Fire for a magika based taunt – coagulating blood for magika heal, vigor for stam heal., etc. Since there is 5 pc HB, unstoppable instead of shuffle.

My build is pretty much the same. 5pc Hist bark, 4pc Song of Lamae, and 3 pc endurance. I too also have great healers that throw shards at me. The only problem is when you get horrible healers that don’t have shards or even throw them, then stamina can be a problem, especially on the more difficult dungeons like WGT and ICP. So having the ability to not rely on templars to always provide you with stamina is a big plus.

          • Jared says

            April 12, 2016 at 6:01 PM

Agreed! Good healers are hard to find! Luckily the crew I run with is pretty set – every now and then we have to substitute a DPS and we make sure we run all the big/tougher dungeons together. Like Deltia says I run plenty of tri-pots, etc. btw, http://www.eso-skillfactory.com/en/build/dragonknight/nutzbasher/8371/ is my build (minus the caltrops).
unlike most tanks (I suppose), I don’t block 100% of the time – I don’t find it effective. I allow myself to take a little bit of damage and switch back and forth between stam. and magika taunts. I’m not really using caltrops, so that stam buster is out of the picture. If I have to grab a lot of mobs, I center on the majority of them, through down talons, pull the ones outside and recast talons. With you using SoL our builds are pretty close! Are you on console or PC?

Console-PS4. Trying to get the pieces for pariah can be a pain in the ass. I only have one piece right now, just need one more armor and all the jewelry. Trying to find people to do the wrothgar bosses can be a pain. I also run pretty much the same skills. Instead of caltrops, I have absorb magic for a heal from spell projectiles and decrease in block cost and increase in damage I can block.

that may be a problem… EP here haha. Regardless… maybe you can run some dungeons with us?!?! When we drop a DPS I always want to switch to mine, but then we are left tankless. We are also in the process of putting together a trials team… meaning we need 8 more people 🙂

    April 12, 2016 at 7:42 PM

Jared…yeah definitely. I know how you feel. The guild I’m in I do most of the tanking during dungeons, but that also has to do with the fact I don’t have a vet 16 dps. Currently working on a stamplar, only vet 2. But if you ever need a tank, I don’t mind as long as I’m not doing something else, even for a trials.

    quick questions?
in your description of what you have in your bars you mention Sword and shield in both but in your description of you gear you list maul? Was that on purpose? Also, you list on weapon one and two shield as a glyph. I can not imagine this was done on purpose as that is a jewelry glyph.

I might have missed it in the video explanation

    Deltia,

Hey brother I went to the link and watched the T7 video (great work by the way)… Your spread sheet for armor build is the same one (I believe and did not compare to closely) you have posted here. Which still gives me the same questions. Weapon one and weapon two are glyphed with Shield. Is that not a jewelry based glyph?

I am a horrible tank and trying to use your suggestions to get better. I am trying to do DSA but not having much luck so I am struggling with obtaining the footman armor. Currently in its place I am using all hist bark

Want to start by saying I love this site. I’m an on again off again ESO player, but you always have a ton of legit information and builds. How might you adjust this build for the dark brotherhood patch? I’m not looking for a skills overhaul, but it does look like the CP load-out will change. Specifically, I noticed block expertise has moved out of steed, over to shadow if I read correctly. So move points out of tower? Not sure how important that is, but then you still end up with a lot of leftover points from Steed. Interested to hear what your thoughts were.
