Google Announced a New Design Language for Android 16

Android 16 will include a major overhaul of the UI. Google is designing a new Material 3 Expressive design to enhance the user experience.

Android 16’s beta builds have been out for a while. While they brought some interesting features, they didn’t seem that interesting. However, that will soon change as Google has released a sneak peek of the final design of Android 16, which is absolutely mind-blowing. Google is calling this new design Material 3 Expressive. This design has more vibrant colors, intuitive animations, stylized typography, and more to deliver a better experience.

Android 16 Will Follow the New Material 3 Expressive Design

Google has announced that Android 16 will bring a huge refresh in UI design ahead of the Google I/O 2025 event. The search giant also posted a small teaser of some of the changes in the user interface that we can expect, which certainly impressed us. Here are some of the major places where you will see the new Material 3 Expressive design:

  • Quick Settings panel: The Quick Settings panel is getting a major overhaul in Android 16. You will not only be able to resize the individual tiles, but their shapes will also be redesigned to better fit the UI.
  • Fluid animations: Almost all system animations are redesigned to appear more bouncy and intuitive.
  • Blurs and translucent shading: Blur and translucent shading have been added across the OS, including the Quick Settings panel, to provide a colorful depth-of-field effect.
  • Vibrant colors and stylized typography: The Material You theming colors are much more vibrant now than ever. You will also find various stylized typography in many places, including the lock screen.

When Can You Try Out the New Material 3 Expressive Design?

All previous Android 16 beta releases, including the Beta 4 build, didn’t have the new Material 3 Expressive design enabled. However, an Android Police report suggests a new QPR1 beta build will be released after the Google I/O 2025 event or by the end of May 2025, and it is expected to come with the new design.

When Will the Android 16 Stable Version Officially Launch?

According to Google’s Android Developer site, the Android 16 version will be released sometime after April 2025, but the search giant didn’t mention any specific date. However, sources close to Android Police say it will be released in June 2025. We will hear more at the Google I/O 2025 event, so stay tuned for that.
