Discover how you can upgrade your backpack in Enshrouded, which gives you more space to carry more items and crafting materials.

In Enshrouded, expanding your inventory is essential for collecting resources and exploring the vast world of Embervale. Upgrading your backpack involves rescuing the Bard NPC, Valory, who offers crafting services for various backpack sizes. Furthermore, you’ll also need the help of the Hunter NPC, Athalan Skree, to prepare the necessary crafting materials. In this Enshrouded guide, we’ll cover where to find Backpacks for crafting, how to get the upgrades, and what materials you need.
How to Get a Backpack in Enshrouded

Getting your first Small Backpack in Enshroud is fairly simple, and you can craft it manually without needing help from any survivor craftsperson. To create your first backpack, open up the Crafting tab in your menu. The default key on PC is the ‘V’ key.
To craft a Small Backpack in Enshrouded you will need the following materials:
- 3 Torn Cloth
- 4 Dried Fur
- 5 String
Torn Cloth can be easily looted from defeating Fell enemies. Dried Fur does require the Hunter so that you can put Animal Fur and Salt on the Drying Rack. Finally, String can be made from Plant Fiber via manual crafting. All of these are pretty early-game materials that are easy to find.
The Small Backpack upgrade will increase your inventory by 8 slots.
How to Upgrade Your Backpack in Enshrouded

The Medium and Large Backpack upgrades will require that you find and rescue the Bard, Valory. You won’t be able to get the Bard until you’ve either unlocked the Revelwood Ancient Spire fast travel point or reached Level 12. After that, you will unlock the Follow the Melody quest, which will require you to find her Vault locked away in the Sunken Ancient City north of the Blackmire Ancient Spire.
Once you have rescued Valory and provided her shelter at your base, you’ll be able to see the backpack upgrade crafting recipes.
To craft a Medium Backpack in Enshrouded you will need the following materials:
- 6 Reptile Leather
- 6 Linen
Reptile Leather is made on the Drying Rack with Reptile Hide and Salt. You can get Reptile Hide from Snapjaw enemies, which are large creatures living in the Blackmire swamps. Linen is made using the Hunter’s Hand Spindle or Spinning Wheel and Flax.
To craft a Large Backpack in Enshrouded you will need the following materials:
- 5 Leather
- 5 Linen
Leather can be made at the Hunter’s Tanning Station, with Dried Fur, Salt, and Ammonia Gland. Secondly, Linen is made with the Spindle or Spinning Wheel and Flax.
The Medium Backpack upgrade will increase your inventory by 16 slots, while the Large Backpack will increase your inventory by 24.
How to Use Your Backpack Upgrade in Enshrouded
There are two ways you can use and equip your new backpack upgrade to your character in Enshrouded. First, you can simply pull up your inventory, where the backpack upgrade should be after you crafted it. Then, right-click and select ‘Equip’ from the drop-down menu.
