The original Vindictus was an MMO (massively multiplayer online), so many players are wondering if Defying Fate falls into the same genre.

The first Vindictus game primarily focused on the multiplayer aspect, due to it being an MMO. However, Nexon is going in a different direction in Defying Fate, which is set within the same universe.
The recently released demo lets you dive into the starting chapter of the game while playing some side content as well. You can also invite your friends over to play certain missions in co-op. However, mere co-op mechanics do not qualify the game as an MMO.
Vindictus: Defying Fate is not an MMO because it lacks the basic criteria needed for one (at least for now). Here is the reason for the same.

Does Vindictus: Defying Fate Qualify as an MMO?

Despite the original Vindictus from 2010 being an MMO, the new game does not fall under the same bucket. There are a few reasons for this distinction:
- Multiple people exist within the same space and there is a layer of extensive social interactions. Although this is present to some degree.
- MMOs usually also put focus on player-run economies and raid bosses, which require multiple players collaborating to defeat the enemy.
These are not a primary focus of the game. Nexon has said that Defying Fate is primarily a single-player title, with multiplayer content as well. In addition, you can clear most of the content in single-player. Even the special missions that can be started in co-op can be completed solo.
Due to this, Defying Fate does not fulfill the basic criteria to be called an MMO. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have any matching features with an MMO.

Similarities Between Vindictus: Defying Fate and Other MMOs
You might notice that Vindictus has a very similar progression system to other MMOs. You build up a character, which gets stronger over time by gathering better equipment and gear.
Moreover, there is also the existence of the village area, where multiple people can be together. However, this ends here, as you have to attempt the main story in single-player.
In conclusion, Vindictus: Defying Fate is not an MMO, despite sharing some similarities with the genre.
