Compared to modern games of today, both Minecraft Java and Bedrock Editions appear much older. The differences between these two editions are significant, but not too complex to understand.

Looking at the names, you might think that one is just for PC users, while the other edition is for consoles. Well, you are not completely wrong. However, there is more to the story than meets the eye.

The Java Edition for this game was released all the way back in November 2011. It had its Alpha and Beta testing before release. When it came out, the ambition was just to serve PC users. Now, gamers who use software like Windows, Linux, and MacOS can run the Minecraft Java.

Bedrock, on the other hand, was made for systems that cannot run Java games. So, all other devices that run MC, namely: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Android, Windows Mobile, and iOS, can use this Bedrock Edition. What’s better is that PC users can own both versions, Bedrock and Java, separately.

So, if the game is the same across all devices, what is the difference?

Minecraft Editions: Java vs Bedrock

Online Play

Minecraft is not a co-op adventure necessarily. However, if you have a squad that can hop on the game, it will be worth everyone’s time. The game becomes the perfect match of chaos and fun. There is a lot to do when playing the game online with others. But this is not available for every edition, unfortunately.

Both Minecraft Java and Bedrock offer online play, but only people who have the same editions can play together. So, ask your friends what version they play on, and buy that specific edition. You can own two editions as well. But an informed decision will go easier on your wallet.

Servers and Realms

Java Edition is comparatively easier to manage in terms of servers. For example, if you want, you can enjoy a number of third-party servers right away. However, the Bedrock Edition requires you to have a Microsoft account to join.

As for Realms, it is a subscription-based server hosting service that allows players to create their own private servers. This service called Realms is only available for Java players. What do Bedrock players get? Well, they get the Realms Plus!

You cannot have more than 10 players in the “Realm” that you hosted. This is less than what a usual Minecraft server would have. But that’s because Realms makes server hosting much easier for those who are not too tech-savvy.

Customization and Mods

Minecraft’s Java Edition is home to various customizations. The game has been running for a really long time and got popularized for its customizations and mod supports. There are a lot of mechanics that you can get into if you are somebody who has technical knowledge. This is not just limited to this edition though.

Gamers who use Minecraft Bedrock can also enjoy some custom content. However, the difference is that the custom content, in that case, is official. It is surely high quality because you will find it in the Minecraft Marketplace. You can tingle with the Character Creator as well if you like. It’s just that things are more straightforward with this edition.
