What is the Wilderness map in BG3?
The Wilderness in BG3 is the largest map of the game, and the site for Act 1. Although it beats other regions by square footage, note that the Druid’s Grove takes up almost one-fourth of it. That is quite big for something that’s essentially your first hub town.
There’s dozens of quests and side-objectives scattered about the Wilderness in BG3, but Act 1 is much bigger than just this overworld. To progress the quest, you can also hit the Underdark in Act 1, a sprawling subterranean world comparable to Elden Ring’s Nokron/Nokstella.
The Wilderness also has a direct opening to Mountain Pass in BG3, another Act 1 area with its own quests and loot to pillage. Note that you should delay going to the Mountain Pass at least until you resolve the refugee crisis in Druid’s Grove, one way or another.

5 Places you shouldn’t miss on the Wilderness BG3 map
Sunlit Wetlands / Putrid Bog: Sunlit Wetlands can be found at the southwest quadrant of the Act 1 map. This section includes a way to solve the “Investigate Kagha” quest by gaining some intel on her. More importantly, this is also the site for the Auntie Ethel/Hag quest. If you play your cards right, you can get a permanent +1 stat bonus to your chosen attribute which can go beyond 20.
Mountain Pass: A whole-new map accessible from two passages in the Wilderness, the Mountain Pass is a standalone Act 1 map with self-contain quest threads. This place is worth a visit, as it contains equipment that can carry you till the end-game. However, you should only do it after you defeat the Goblin leaders or clear out Druid’s Grove.
Phalar Aluve Longsword (Underdark): Phalar Alvue is the best support-oriented longsword in the game. Even though it’s found in the Underdark map, you can get it early on in BG3 if you clear out Whispering Depths and then jump into the giant hole with Featherfall.
Festering Cove (Underdark): A hidden segment of Underdark only accessible from jumping off a craggy rock at X: 76 Y: -242, Festering Cove is worth a visit. From this place, you can get the permanent buff “BOOOAL’s Blessing”.
Zhentarim Hideout: The Zhentarim Hideout is underneath Waukeen’s Rest, accessed from a hut sealed off by barrels. The vendor here has some good ranged weapon Titanstring, as well as a refreshable stock of Invisibility potions.
Where can you find Scratch on the Wilderness map in BG3?
At X: 69 Y: 476, you can find Scratch, a white dog. With the right dialogue options, you can get him as a permanent attached follower. Notably, he’s the only attached follower who can use the “Help” action, helping you out of a downed state, as well as a number of CC states.
How many ways are there to get to the Underdark map in BG3?
There are four ways to get to the Underdark map in BG3:
- The Hag’s lair in Putrid Bog/Sunlit Wetlands. Reach the end of the Hag’s dungeon, and there is a rock you can jump to off towards the east, leading you to another tree-like face. This can be surpassed by putting on a Whispering Mask, leading you to a Mushroom Circle that will teleport you into the Underdark.
- The green hole in Whispering Depths. This is the cavern found by climbing down the well in Blighted Village. Cast Featherfall and jump into the hole for a cutscene, at you reach Underdark at th end of it.
- Selune’s Puzzle in the Defiled Temple beyond the Goblin camp is the canon way to reach Underdark. This chamber can be found by getting past Priestess Guts’ private chamber.
- The Zhentarim Hideout has an elevator that leads you to the Underdark.
