Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG based on the well-known Chinese novel Journey to the West. The hype for this game has been in a build-up this summer, with it climbing the Steam starts as one of the platform’s most-wishlisted games. Phenomenal trailers with gorgeous graphics and smooth gameplay are ramping up the expectations for its release. In this article, we’ll break down everything we know about Black Myth: Wukong!
Black Myth: Wukong Release Date
Developed and published by Chinese studio Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong will have a global release date of August 20, 2024.
However, additional information about specific release times or when/if players will be able to pre-load the game is not yet available. We’ll add that information here, once it has been announced.
Black Myth: Wukong Platforms
Black Myth: Wukong will hit the Playstation 5 and PC platforms on the official release date of August 20, 2024. Furthermore, the game was originally supposed to launch for the Xbox Series X/S at the same time. For disappointed players on the Microsoft console, the developers have assured fans there will be an Xbox Series X/S version eventually.
Significantly, no reason for the delay on the Xbox console has been given. However, speculation could suggest that it may have something to do with the limitations of the Series S hardware. Larian Studios had to delay the release of their popular Baldur’s Gate 3 last year for a similar reason.

Black Myth: Wukong: Story and Setting
Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG strongly rooted in Chinese mythology and based on one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature: Journey to the West. The main focus of the original novel is the legendary pilgrimage the Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang took as he traveled to Central Asia and India. Another central figure is Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, who is one of three protectors who agree to help the monk as an atonement for their sins.
Sun Wukong is a monkey born from a stone nourished by the Five Elements, who learns the art of the Tao. Additionally, he gains immortality, the ability to transform, incredible combat skills, and other mythical powers. He sets himself against Heaven and is later punished for his hubris when he is sealed underneath a mountain for 500 years.
At the moment we have do not have any details on how closely the story of Black Myth: Wukong may or may not follow the original tale. In the game, Wukong is referred to as “The Destined One”, who is seeking to uncover the obscured truth beneath the veil of a glorious legend from the past.
Black Myth: Wukong: Gameplay
Wukong’s weapon of choice in the novel is a staff, which was originally a pillar supporting the undersea palace of the Dragon King of the East Sea. The Monkey King was able to pull it out of its support and lift it, and therefore claimed it as his own. In the legend, he can shrink the staff down to the size of a needle to keep it in his ear, as well as expand it to gigantic proportions.
Images and gameplay that we’ve seen so far suggest that this staff will be your primary weapon on Black Myth: Wukong, as well. Additionally, the official website states that players will be able to use special spells and abilities in combat. Moreover, you’ll be able to further tailor your play style by choosing Talents that can enhance your powers and skills.
Black Myth: Wukong: Collector’s Edition
The Collector’s Edition for Black Myth: Wukong costs $400 and comes with both physical and digital content, including:

Note that no matter what edition of the game you purchase, if you buy it before August 20, then you will receive the Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd in-game item. However, the website does make clear that this item is also something that you can obtain as you progress through the game. We don’t yet know if the Gourd has some mechanical function or if it’s just cosmetic.
Deluxe and Standard Editions
There is also a Digital Deluxe Edition of Black Myth: Wukong for sale, as well as a Physical Deluxe Edition players can purchase.
The Physical Deluxe Edition is similar to the Collector’s Edition, except that it does not have the Figurine and instead contains a bronze headband. Additionally, the Silk Scroll item is different. The Physical Digital Deluxe of Black Myth: Wukong sells for $170 and contains these items:

The trailers for Black Myth: Wukong have captured a lot of attention from players since the first large gameplay reveal back in the summer of 2020.
