Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring is a great accessory for Druids using Wild Shape, or other stealthy characters who like to mask themselves. The main perk on this ring is called Shapeshifter’s Boon. This will give the wearer a +1d4 bonus to all Ability checks while they are shapeshifted or wearing a disguise.

Therefore, this means that it is one of the few pieces of gear that can be used by Druids while in one of their Wild Shape forms. Additionally, it should apply to any character that casts the Disguise Self spell on themselves.

Moreover, you can get the bonus from this ring and then switch it out for another after transforming. First, make sure you have the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring on before transforming. Then, as you transform, you’ll receive a condition from the ring called Mark of the Shifter. Once this is applied, it will last until your next Long Rest. Consequently, you can switch the ring out for something else until you rest and need to apply the condition again.

To get the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring you will need to choose to either kill it in Act 1 or wait and assist it in Act 3. In Act 1 you will encounter the Strange Ox within the Hollow of the Druid Grove. There is a group of oxen just north of the trader Arron and the Strange Ox is the one farthest north. You can initiate a conversation with him by using the Speak with Animals spell or drinking an Animal Speaking potion. He’s very cagey and won’t want to tell you anything about himself and will become aggressive if you push.

Additionally, be warned that if you choose to attack the Ox in Act 1 other nearby inhabitants at the Grove will become hostile. You can use the spell Fog Cloud and cast it right over where the Strange Ox stands to blind anyone from seeing your actions.

However, killing the Ox does mean that you will miss out on (admittedly minor) additional story with the Ox. Furthermore, if you go so far as to assist him in Act 3 he will become an ally in the final fight. Realistically, having him along won’t be super impactful, but it can be interesting to find out his true nature/form.

Getting Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring in Act 3

If you want to get the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring without killing the Ox you will have to wait until Act 3. The Strange Ox can be found right away in the Rivington area, within a small stable to the south. This time he will ask for your assistance getting into the city, though he won’t tell you why. Agree to get the Help the Devilish Ox quest. He will transform himself into an apple you can put in your pocket.

There is nothing else specific you have to do at this point. Simply continue to explore and adventure in the area while making your way towards the city. Once you are past Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and inside the city itself, you will automatically trigger the end of the quest. You will receive the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring in your inventory, along with a little note from the Ox.
