Clothing can be an important decision when equipping your Monk.  Unlike other classes, the Monk class, and subclasses emphasize cloth rather than armour and shields.  Moreover, Monks use unarmed attacks, and typically gloves provide powerful bonuses to aid in damage.  In this guide, we share the best way to increase your Monk’s damage and survivability through clothing.  Check out our other guide for unarmed weapons.   Let’s dive into the top 10 best clothing for the Monk class in Baldur’s Gate 3.

  • Clothing Type: Helmet
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Weight: 0.5 kg / 1 lb
  • Value: 240 gp
  • Where to Find: Locked Chest in Blighted Village X: 32 Y: 403 Act 1.
  • Special Bonus: Smooth Start

To increase your Monk’s movement potential, look to collect the Haste Helm in Act 1. Located in a locked chest inside of the Blighted Village, Haste Helm has the Smooth Start special feature. At the start of combat, you will be given an additional 1.5-meter movement for three turns. Combine this item with the Wood Half-Elf bonus, you can move 12 meters per turn!

One of the issues with the Monk at the beginning of BG3 is the lack of movement. You are likely to spend your first turn moving close, without reaching a target. This often results in you taking damage first. However, the Haste Helm is an early way to increase your Monk’s movement and potential damage!

9 Armour of Uninhibited Kushigo

Armour of Uninhibited Kushigo - BG3

Armour of Uninhibited Kushigo features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Clothing Type: Chest

  • Special Bonus: Kushigo Counter

The best Act 1 clothing item for the Monk is the Armour of Uninhibited Kushigo. This clothing item is powerful due to Kushingo Counter, allowing you to use a reaction against any attacker that misses.  You must have Patient Defence active, however.  Unlocked at level 2, Patient Defence is a powerful Monk survivability action that consumes a bonus action and a Ki Point. For 1 turn, attack rolls against you have Disadvantage, and your Monk gains advantage on dexterity saving throws.

The best combination to use Patient Defence is when you expect to take damage. With high Dexterity and potential movement speed, rush into battle.  Strike enemies with your action and use a bonus action for Patient Defence combined with Kushingo clothing.  When enemies retaliate against you and miss, you will react doing free damage while avoiding being hit.  Consider this a powerful Act 1 clothing piece for any Monk to collect.

When it comes to mobility, nothing beats Act 1’s Disintegrating Night Walkers. You can either loot or steal these boots from Nere in the Grymforge as part of the Free True Soul quest. What makes these boots so powerful is the Night Walker bonus. You essentially avoid environmental effects that cause you to be immobilized, fall down, and knocked prone. Considering the Monk class is entirely focused on movement, this is the best Act 1 clothing item to collect.

In addition, the Night Walkers allow you to cast the Misty Step spell once per short rest. Misty Step is a powerful teleport spell that travels you anywhere within 18-meters that you can see. You can combine the 18-meter Misty Step with your movement speed. If you obtained Haste Helm, and are a Wood Half-Elf, that’s 30 meters in one turn! Whether you want to retreat, charge, or have flexibility in your movement, Disintegrating Night Walkers is a Monk gear priority in Act 1.

The most important ability for the Monk is Dexterity because it scales your unarmed strikes, and increases Initiative. With the Cat’s Grace special feature, you get +2 Dexterity at all times. You can combine this with another Act 1 item, Gloves of Dexterity. These gloves increase your Dexterity to 18, and with the Graceful Cloth, you can reach 20 early in BG3.

You can continue to optimize the Monk with Tavern Brawler with multiclass Thief Rogue. This the Monk, Thief combination, you gain an additional bonus action along with Extra Attack. Every turn you can essentially attack four times, each giving an additional 6 damage. If you want to take this to the extreme, you can combine this setup with Elixir of Bloodlust. If you kill a target, you gain another action, which equals two more attacks. This is why Might Cloth, Tavern Brawler is one of the best-built clothing combinations for the Monk!

This is helpful if turn one you aren’t able to reach the target, and have to spend a bonus action on the dash. You won’t lose damage with additional Force and Advantage!

The extra defensive benefit of this item set is Breezeswift Speed. When you activate Patient Defence, you will trigger an automatic Blade Ward spell. This reduces damage from Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing attacks by half! The Seeking Blood passive is nearly always active because of the Monk’s multiple attacks. With extra attack, and bonus action attacks, your Monk will consistently see the +2 advantage.
