BG3 Gloves of Soul Catching

Gloves of Soul Catching

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Gloves of Soul Catching are another great piece of gear you can acquire during your adventures in the House of Hope. Although the gloves do not have a weight or proficiency requirement and any character, race, or class could wear them, the bonuses are clearly geared towards an unarmed fighter such as a Monk or perhaps a Barbarian.

The Soul Fist effect grants you additional Force damage on any unarmed attack, while the Soul Catching bonus will give you back 10 HP once per turn. It gives you the option, if you wish, to pass on this healing in favor of an Advantage on Attack Rolls and Saving throws if you prefer.

Here are all the Gloves of Soul Catching features in BG3:

  • Armor: Gloves
  • Proficiency Requirement: N/A
  • Rarity: Legendary
  • Weight: 0.5 kg
  • Value: 900
  • Location: Reward for Save Hope quest
  • Bonuses:
    • Soul Fist: Your unarmed attacks deal an additional 1d10 Force damage.
    • Soul Catching: Once per turn, on an unarmed hit, you regain 10Hit Points. Alternatively, you may forego healing to gain Advantage on Attack Rolls and Saving Throws until the end of your next turn.
    • Constitution +2 (up to 20)
  • All Classes, Companions, and Races Can Use This Item

How to Get the Gloves of Soul Catching in Baldur’s Gate 3

In Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate Raphael make you an offer – he’ll give you the Orphic Hammer, which you can use to free Orpheus, but in exchange you must give him the Crown of Karsus after you defeat the Elder Brain. If you refuse this offer, but still want the Hammer, you’ll need to find a way in the Hells.

You can do this in a few different ways – though all of them start by visiting the Devil’s Fee and speaking to Helsik. You can either pay her to open a portal to Hell for you. She’ll charge you a hefty price of 20,000 coin – but may be persuaded to do it for 10,000 coin or in trade for the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength. The other option is to pickpocket the ritual instructions from her, go upstairs and open the portal yourself.

Other Notable Loot in the House of Hope:

Arriving at the House of Hope

Shortly after you arrive through the portal, you’ll meet Hope. Hope has been trapped here for a long time, tormented by Raphael. She’ll appear to your group to warn you, and offer to guide you, and ask you to save her. Doing so will ultimately get you the Gloves of Soul Catching, but there is quite a lot steps to take to get there.

Here is an overview of the steps you’ll need to take to successfully acquire the Gloves of Soul Catching:

  • Agree to try and save Hope when first speaking with her.
  • Visit the Archives to discover the Orphic Hammer.
  • Visit the Boudoir to find the password for the Hammer’s shield (also to get the Helldusk Gloves).
  • Don’t forget the Helldusk Helmet along the way .
  • Return to the Archives and steal the Orphic Hammer and other two gear pieces.
  • From the Archives door, fight your way straight down the passage ahead (straight east) to find Hope’s prison hatch.
  • Enter and break her bonds.
  • Attempt to leave the House of Hope via the portal you came through.
  • Fight Raphael and his minions.
  • Keep Hope alive – if she dies during the fight, you will loose out on the Gloves.

Hope’s Prison

Don’t try to free Hope until after you’ve completed everything else you want to do in the House of Hope. The last thing to do before heading to her prison is to steal the Orphic Hammer – to do this you’ll need to visit the Boudior to discover the password locked within a safe. There is no point in trying to rescue Hope before this because the only thing which will break her chains is the very Hammer you came for.

After stealing the Hammer, leave the Archives and head straight down the passageway in front of you, past the dinning table and all the way east. You’ll have to fight your way through, and minions will keep getting in your way. The Hatchway into Hope’s Prison is in an alcove next to the room full of portals to other realms. Equip your highest Strength character with the Hammer before going in – if that’s not your avatar character, we highly recommend Lae’zel.

Baldur's Gate 3 Hope's Prison hatch and breaking stones

Once inside Hope’s cell you’ll find her magically bound to a center platform, with large glowing stones, one on higher platforms to either side of her. Your aim is those stones, which the Orphic Hammer can shatter with ease. Misty Step is handy here, though any character with decent Strength should also be able to jump them. There will be some other minions here to fight as well, but if you made it down the passageway, then these shouldn’t give you much more trouble.

Unfortunately, after freeing Hope from prison she doesn’t yet reward you with the Gloves yet. Now comes the more difficult challenge – when you attempt to leave the House of Hope you’ll trigger a fight with Raphael, who has finally returned. Defeating him will get you the Helldusk Armour and you can read more in that guide for tips on the fight. The most important part, if you want the Gloves, is to make sure that Hope survives the fight. She does have several healing abilities so it’s best to make liberal use of them.

As soon as the fight is over, if Hope is still alive, you will automatically enter into a conversation with her, after which you will be automatically be rewarded with the Gloves of Soul Catching.
