Destiny 2’s newest expansion, the Final Shape, is rumored to be delayed until June 2023 following massive layoffs at Bungie.
Destiny 2 The Final Shape Delayed
Today was just a normal day in the Destiny community. Guardians were winding down with this week coming to an end, preparing for the weekly reset tomorrow morning. And then out of the blue, a post by Jason Schreier on X reported on an unexpected delay on Destiny 2 The Final Shape. Suddenly every social media platform was exploding with what seemed to be an implosion at Bungie as several employees reported being laid off.
While nothing concrete on the delay has been released yet, Jason states an undisclosed source has told him that the Final Shape will be delayed until June 2023. Destiny 2’s latest expansion was set to come out on February 24th, 2023. And while we have had delays in Destiny 2’s history, this one feels off as it comes much later in the production cycle than the others. Previously Shadowkeep and Beyond Light got minor delays, and Witch Queen received a substantial delay from November to February. Perhaps the biggest red flag about all of this is the sheer number of layoffs coming along with this announcement.
Bungie Lays Off Several Employees
Several employees at Bungie, especially several members of the community management team, have announced that they have been let go. This includes Social Media Lead, Griffin Bennett, and front-facing Community Manager, Liana Ruppert. I could name quite a few other names and titles, like Publishing Producer Michael Bianchi, but the list seems to be getting longer and longer as the day goes on. I understand that this is business, but my heart goes out to everyone who lost their jobs today.
Bungie has yet to make an official comment on the layoffs or the delay. According to Jason, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons stated they would have a team meeting later today to “discuss today’s events.” I imagine we will be getting some form of official announcement soon, but with the entire Social Media team gutted, it is unclear who will be making the announcement.
