As Rockstar Games gears up for the highly anticipated 2026 release of GTA 6, speculations are mounting about the potential return of Liberty City in the game. This iconic location is the game’s New York-inspired map. It’s the setting for various games like GTA 3 and GTA Liberty City Stories.

While the game is confirmed to be set in Vice City, recent trailers have led to theories that the game may include a Liberty City expansion. In this article, let’s take a look at some reasons why GTA 6 may include a Liberty City DLC and also reasons why it might not be added in the game.

Keep in mind that Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed whether Liberty City will appear in GTA 6. All references to Liberty City are based on speculation, community theories, and unverified hints from trailers and leaks.

3 Reasons Liberty City Could Be a GTA 6 DLC

1. Lucia’s Backstory Points to Liberty City

When the official 1st trailer of GTA 6 dropped back in 2024, a lot of fans were already speculating about Liberty City being one of the maps that could be in the game. The hype grew more intense when the second trailer, released just 15 months after the first one, showed locations in Liberty City.

In the second GTA 6 trailer, protagonist Lucia is shown with ties to Liberty City, including a stint in its penitentiary. Additionally, a Liberty City license plate and a character wearing a Liberty City cap appear in the footage.

These led to fans believing that the game may include multiple maps. Perhaps Liberty City could be a separate location you can visit, like GTA 5 Online’s Cayo Perico.

2. Rockstar’s History of Expanding Maps

Rockstar has previously expanded game worlds post-launch. For instance, Red Dead Redemption 2 included a significant portion of the map from the original game. As mentioned previously, there is a small island in GTA 5 Online called Cayo Perico that you can travel to via plane. This precedent indicates that adding Liberty City as a DLC is within the realm of possibility.

3. Fan Demand and Speculation

The GTA community is abuzz with theories and hopes for Liberty City’s return. Some fans believe that Rockstar’s shutdown of a fan-made Liberty City Preservation Project mod hints at official plans to reintroduce the city in GTA 6.

The mod in question is basically a recreation of Liberty City within GTA 5. However, it’s more than just an asset flip. The mod contains custom textures, furniture, and more. This means the team behind the mod did put a lot of work into making Liberty City in GTA 5 a reality.

With Rockstar requesting a take-down of the mod, this might mean they are also preparing something similar. Perhaps a GTA 4 Remaster, or a fully integrated Liberty City expansion for GTA 6. Until then, we won’t know for sure. We’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled for more updates in the future.

2 Reasons Liberty City Might Not Make It

1. Technical and Development Challenges

Development might take time if they plan to add a massive map like Liberty City in GTA 6. (Image via Rockstar Games)

Recreating Liberty City with the graphics expected in GTA 6 can be a resource-intensive investment. The city would need to be rebuilt from the ground up to match the new game’s graphics and mechanics, which could be resource-intensive.

However, the game did get delayed from a fall 2025 release to a May 16, 2026 release date. If the game is delayed this long, Rockstar might be cooking up something for the game. Perhaps, they needed more time to polish the game, including a possible addition of a Liberty City expansion.

2. Massive Game Size

GTA 5 Enhanced is already at around 100 GB in file size. With new and improved graphics and audio compression technology, it’s actually around 15 GB smaller than the Legacy version. Imagine how big the file size of GTA 6 would be.

If we add multiple cities to the game, it could possibly double the size of the GTA 5 Enhanced Edition. That’s almost a third of your console storage. It would take an enormous amount of optimization, including cutting-edge texture streaming and audio compression, just to keep the file size manageable.

Without these kinds of technical advancements, players might be looking at downloads well over 200 GB, and that’s before factoring in updates or DLCs or a potential GTA 6 Online.
