Creating a powerful build in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be a complex task. Balancing many important decisions and choices like ability score, level progression, companions, weapons, armor, and consumables. In this build guide, we walk you through the latest Monk subclass Drunken Master, released with Patch 8.

This build page has been updated for the patch 8 version of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Monk Class Guide in BG3

The Monk class excels at unarmed combat, using punches with fist for damage. Moreover, the Monk doesn’t need weapons to do high damage, and with Tavern Brawler passives, remains one of the strongest classes in BG3. Uniquely, the Monk uses clothing, not armour, making it easy to gear up throughout the three acts of BG3.

Why Should You Choose the Drunken Master Subclass for the Monk Class in BG3?

Players should choose the Drunken Master if they want a fun unique way to play the Monk. In combat, the Drunken Master can stand up from being knocked prone, redirect attacks, and inflict drunk status effects on enemies. This subclass is powerful and versatile and makes a great addition to the Monk class.

Everything About the Drunken Master Monk in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Drunken Master Monk uses the drunk status effect to increase damage and debuff enemies. You can drink alcohol to regenerate Ki Points, the resources used for Monk attacks, giving players a fun alternative to the Monk. The build is also powerful, recovering from prone, redirecting attacks, and inflicting drunk on enemies. With Monks, you won’t have to worry about finding critical weapons, just use your unarmed fist!

However, the Drunken Master is weaker in combat than Way of the Open hand and you need to multiclass to make the most out of the class. Monks are also mobility-dependent and susceptible to incoming magic attacks. However, players should pickup this build if they want a fun, unique way to play the Monk that retains the class’s power and identity.

Ability Score

Example text

The Best Ability Score for Way of the Drunken Master Monk Build is 17 Dexterity, 16 Wisdom, and 15 Constitution.  Dexterity boosts our unarmed damage, while Constitution increases our health. At level 4, we’ll take Tavern Brawler and raise Constitution to 16. Most of our damage will come from maximizing Strength with the Elixir of Hill Giant Strength, which sets it to 21—hence, we don’t invest in Strength initially. The drawback of this build is weaker dialogue options due to low Charisma. Also, make sure to get Auntie Ethel’s permanent bonus in Act 1 to make Dexterity an even number. By level five, you should have tavern brawler, elixir of hill giant, and +1 to Dex bonus.

Skills are associated with specific attributes and are used to determine the success or effectiveness of certain actions or abilities.

Here are the best skills for the Death Domain Cleric in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Athletics is a Strength Skill used to shove and to resists shoves.
  • Acrobatics: Dexterity Skill that helps resist being shoved.

Illithid Powers For Drunken Master Monk

Best Tapdole Powers for Builds in Baldur's Gate 3

The best Illithid Powers for a Drunken Master Monk build are Luck of the Farm Realms, Black Hole, and Cull of the Weak. Luck of the Farm helps with critical hits and burst damage and, combined with Cull of the Weak, can trigger AOE damage passively. Black Hole requires you to take the Astral Tadpole in Act 2, but it sucks in 5 enemies, slows them, and can be recast for free. This is helpful in certain large-scale boss fights with many enemies. Below are the best Illithid Tadpole Powers for the Drunken Master Monk build in Baldur’s Gate 3:

Illithid PowersDescription
Luck of the Far RealmsWhen you make a successful Attack Roll against a foe, you can change that hit into a Critical Hit.
Cull of the WeakWhen you bring a creature down to fewer hit points than your number of evolved Illithid powers, it dies and all nearby creatures take 1-4 Psychic damage.
Psionic BacklashWhen an enemy within 9m casts a spell, you can use your reaction to inflict ld4 Psychic damage to the caster per the spell’s level.
BlackholeArea-based suck-in that slows targets.
RepulsorMassive area knockback that can hit friendlies.
CharmThis is the priority power you want to obtain because you can force enemies to attack something else.

Best Companions for Drunken Master Monk

ShadowheartGale, and Karlach make the best companions for the Drunken Master Monk build because you gain a melee damage dealer, a utility spell caster, and a support build.

  • Gale (Wizard – Evocation) – Use him for pure area-based damage caused by fire and ice.
  • Karlach (Barbarian – Berserker) – Have her the front-line attention-getter and high damage-dealer.
  • Shadowheart (Cleric – Life) – utilizes Shadowheart to buff, heal, and stun enemies.

Level 1

Here are are the class features you get as Level 1 Monk in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Ki: resource points to use special Monk attacks can be replenished on short rest.
  • Unarmored Defense: While not wearing armour, you add your Wisdom Modifier to your Armour Class. This is why we want high Wisdom and only use clothing not armor unless it gives more Armour Class (AC).
  • Dexterous Attacks: Attacks with Monk Weapons and unarmed attacks scale with your Dexterity instead of your Strength if your Dexterity is higher. This is the reason our primary offense stat is Dexterity, not Strength.
  • Deft Strikes: Attacks with Monk Weapons and unarmed attacks deal 1~4 Bludgeoning damage, unless their normal damage is higher.
  • Unarmed Strike: After attacking with a Monk Weapon or while unarmed, you can make another unarmed attack as a bonus action.

At this level, the core of the build comes together—unarmed attacks, wearing clothing instead of armor, and a focus on bonus actions. From level one, you can pair an action-based attack, such as an unarmed strike or weapon attack, with Flurry of Blows. This remains a central theme throughout the Monk build. Your Ki serves as a resource system that later enhances attacks with effects like stuns or knockbacks. The gameplay is straightforward: attack unarmed and use bonus actions for additional strikes.

Level 2

At Level 2 of the Monk class, you will receive some additional class features:

  • Unarmoured Movement: Your movement speed increases by 3m while you are not wearing armor or using a shield.
  • Patient Defense: using a bonus action and a Ki Point, Attack Rolls against you have Disadvantage, and you have Advantage on Dexterity Saving Throws.
  • Step of the Wind: Dash (Action): using a bonus action and a Ki point, Double your movement speed. Jump no longer requires a bonus action.
  • Step of the Wind: Disengage (Action): using a bonus action and a Ki point, Retreat to safety by Disengaging. Jump no longer requires a bonus action.

Breaking down these additional class features and actions further, we gain even more reason to wear clothing instead of armor, thanks to the increased movement speed. Patient Defense allows you to impose disadvantage on attacks against you, making it especially valuable. Keep an eye out for cloth gear options in Acts 1 through 3 that complement this ability when browsing vendors or traders.

Additionally, Step of the Wind: Dash and Disengage greatly enhance mobility. Dash, in particular, is incredibly useful as it can be used as a bonus action. Early on, the biggest challenge for a Monk is closing the distance and engaging in combat while balancing both an action and a bonus action. With Ki Points and bonus actions, you can now cover vast distances and still have your action available for an attack or another move.

Level 3

Now at Level 3 you will get to choose your subclass for Monk, which for this build will be the Way of the Drunken Master. Additionally, you’ll also receive an extra Ki point and get a boost to your unarmed attack damage.

  • Martial Arts: Deft Strikes (class feature): Damage from attacks with Unarmed/Monk Weapons deal 1d6 Bludgeoning (previously 1d4) unless their normal damage is higher.
  • Deflect Missiles (class feature): Use your reaction to reduce the damage from a ranged weapon attack.
  • Cheeky Tipple (subclass feature): You are Immune to the negative effects of being Drunk. Once per day, when you drink alcohol, you regain half your Ki Points (rounded down).
  • Drunken Performance (subclass feature): You gain Proficiency in Performance.
  • Drunken Technique (subclass feature): Punch twice in quick succession and grant yourself an additional 3 meters movement and the benefits of Disengage.

At this level you get a bonus action attack and immune to drunk. Use cheap wine and booze to refresh Ki Points once per day in between combat.

Level 4

Next at Level 4 with Way of the Drunken Master Monk, you get to pick a Feat along with a Ki Point, Slow Fall, and a subclass feature. With the Tavern Brawler feat, you want to add the extra ability score point to your Constitution.

  • Slow Fall (class feature): When you fall, you can use your reaction to gain Resistance to Falling damage.
  • Tavern Brawler (feat): Increase your Strength or Constitution by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • Intoxicating Strike (subclass feature): Hit a creature with your bare fists and possibly get them Drunk.

At this stage, make sure to increase Con by +1 for an even number. Intoxicating Strike should be your go to action attack to get targets drunk.

Level 5

As a Level 5 Way of the Drunken Master Monk, our power dramatically increases via a new class feature along with another Ki Point.

  • Stunning Strike (Unarmed): use action to possibly stun the target.
  • Extra Attack: can make an additional free attack after making an unarmed or weapon attack.
  • Stunning Strike (Melee): use action to possibly stun the target.

This level gives you two attacks per action and more abilities to stun targets.

Level 6

With 6 Levels into our best Baldur’s Gate 3 Way of the Drunken Master Monk, you’ll get another Ki Point, two class features, as well as two subclass features.

  • Improved Unarmoured Movement (class feature): Your movement speed increases by 4.5m while you are not wearing armor or using a shield.
  • Ki Empowered Strikes (class feature): Your unarmed attacks count as magical to overcome enemies’ Resistance and Immunity to non-magical damage.
  • Leap to Your Feet (subclass feature): When you are Prone, standing up uses only 1.5 meters of your Movement speed.
  • Redirect Attack (subclass feature): When a creature misses you with a melee attack, you can spend 1 Ki Point as a reaction to make them attack a new target if possible.

With Leap to Your Feet, you want to leave a little bit of movement per turn in case you get knocked prone. Moreover, Redirect Attack requires 1 Ki Point, so leave at least one in case you get a free reaction attack.

Level 7

Next, at Level 7 we are going to multiclass into Rogue because you gain an extra bonus action with the Thief subclass. This gives us 4 attacks per turn (two extra attack for one action, and two bonus actions). With one level into Rogue you will get a Sneak Attack class feature.

  • Sneak Attack (Ranged & Melee): Deal an additional to an enemy you have Advantage against. Attack/Save: Ranged Attack Recharge: Once per turn. In order to gain Advantage, you need to be hiding or that enemy to be engaged with another in 1.5 meters.

Level 8

Then, with a second level in to Rogue at character Level 8, you’ll get a few more new class features:

  • Cunning Action Hide: Hide from enemies by succeeding Stealth checks. Stick to the dark and avoid enemy sightlines. Attacking or casting a spell will reveal your location.
  • Cunning Action Dash: Cover more distance this turn: double your Movement Speed.
  • Cunning Action Disengage: Retreat safely: moving won’t provoke Opportunity Attacks.

Level 9

At character Level 9 we’ll put one more level into the Rogue, and now you can select your subclass. We recommend choosing the Thief.

  • Fast Hands (subclass feature): Gain an additional bonus action.
  • Second-Story Work (subclass feature): You’ve mastered the art of falling and gaining Resistance to Falling damage.

Now with two bonus actions, we can switch back to Monk at level 10 and finish off the leveling process.

Level 10

Now at character Level 10, we suggest that you switch back and starting putting levels into the Way of the Drunken Master Monk again. You’ll get another Ki Point, two class features, and a subclass feature.

  • Evasion (class feature): When a spell or effect would deal half damage on a successful Dexterity Saving Throw, it feels no damage if you succeed, and only half damage if you fail.
  • Stillness of Mind (class feature): If you are Charmed or Frightened, you automatically cast Stillness of Mind to remove the condition.
  • Life of the Party (subclass feature): Every time Intoxicating Strike hits, the monk gains Life of the Party, which increases Armour Class and Attack Rolls against Drunk targets. This effect can stack.

Level 11

Next, at character Level 11, you’ll get an additional Ki Point and choose a second feat. We recommend taking an Ability Improvement to increase your Dexterity.

  • Ability Improvement (feat): Increase your Dexterity to +2 which will help with damage. This will be the last feat we take for this build, but ability improvements are always solid choices and it’s harder to increase Dexterity than say Strength due to consumables.

Level 12

Finally, with our last level in the best Baldur’s Gate 3 Way of the Drunken Master build you will unlock one Ki Point, 2 class features, and one subclass feature.

  • Martial Arts: Deft Strikes (class feature): Damage from attacks with Unarmed/Monk Weapons deal 1d8Bludgeoning (previously 1d6) unless their normal damage is higher.
  • Advanced Unarmoured Movement (class feature): Difficult Terrain doesn’t slow you down and you can Jump an additional 6 meters while you are not wearing armour or using a shield.
  • Sobering Realisation (subclass feature): Hit a Drunk target and sober them up by dealing bonus Psychic damage. On a successful hit, the monk also loses Life of the Party.
