Everything About Throne and Liberty MMORPG

Below, we delve into the top 10 things you need to know about Throne and Liberty, exploring its unique features, gameplay elements, and what sets it apart from the myriad of other MMORPGs vying for your attention.

1 World Setting and Lore

Throne and Liberty World Setting and Lore

Throne and Liberty is set within the boundless world of Solisium, where the forces of light and darkness are clashing over the possession of a coveted Celestial power. A long time ago, the Star of Sylaveth was shattered and its many pieces were scattered across the world. Whoever came into possession of one of the fragments was granted incredible power. Those born with this power became known as Star Children.

Many seek out these Star Children, intending to use their power for nefarious purposes, including the malevolent Arkeum Legions. As you take your place in Solisium, you’ll discover your power as one of the Star Children. Join the Allied Resistance Forces, and learn how to harness your Celestial power to fight back against the darkness threatening the world.

Graphically, the game has beautiful and varied environments with highly populated medieval cities, lush jungles, desert wastelands, underground tombs, desolated ruins, and more. Furthermore, the world of Throne and Liberty runs on a day/night cycle, and the setting of the sun can bring out new, more powerful enemies. Additionally, dynamic weather can reveal limited-timed events and even affect the damage type of some weapon skills.

2 Character Classes and Roles

T&L Character Classes and Roles

In Throne and Liberty, classes are not selected from a named list during character creation but instead are determined by the weapons you have equipped. Furthermore, you can equip up to two weapons at a time, with one main-hand weapon and another off-hand weapon. You can switch back and forth between these weapons at any point during combat.

Here are all seven weapon types in Throne and Liberty:

  1. Crossbow: mobility focused with weakened debuff, ideal for DPS and great off-hand weapon.
  2. Dagger: best overall off-hand DPS weapon because of burst damage and stealth.
  3. Greatsword: the best melee weapon with huge AOE damage and stuns. While it has DPS, Greatsword also has some tanking and survivability skills.
  4. Longbow: highest single target damage ranged weapon but requires stationary gameplay. Longbow has some group utility and healing though a DPS weapon.
  5. Staff: best-ranged AOE weapon but low survivability. The Staff is pure DPS with decent crowd control.
  6. Sword and Shield: the highest survivability weapon and useful for playing solo. The Sword and Shield (SnS) is the true tank of the game.
  7. Wand: damage over time and healing, this is the only true healer weapon. The wand is helpful for leveling or playing solo where you have limited healing.

Consequently, the lines between the typical player roles of tank, healer, and damage dealer are a bit fuzzier in Throne and Liberty. A weapon’s skills, in combination with your off-hand weapon, gear, and Guardian are what make a build strong. Depending on your playstyle and skill choice, various weapons will have more survivability, healing, damage, area damage (AOE), or crowd control.

3 Combat System

Throne and Liberty Combat System

Next in our top 10 things to know about Throne and Liberty is that you can choose to play with a combat system that is either action-oriented or a classic point-and-click tab target. Moreover, combat uses a global cooldown system of around one second, where players rotate through abilities that go on varied cooldowns for a limited time. All weapons have 10 active, 7 passive, and 1 defensive skill to choose from. However, your skill bar has a limit of 12 skills, so you will have to make strategic choices about which abilities from which weapons you place on your active skill bar.

What separates Throne and Liberty’s combat from other MMORPGs is the ability to change the system to action or tab target on the fly. Furthermore, the pace of combat feels faster with lower cooldowns than in World of Warcraft or other older MMOs. Moreover, another critical difference in Throne and Liberty is the lack of a dodge mechanic. Instead, you will need to time a parry maneuver to avoid or defend against some hits.

4 PvE and PvP Content

Throne and Liberty PvE and PvP Content

The developers at NCSOFT have created Throne and Liberty with a strong emphasis on PvP. Consequently, PvP is at its core, with a build of technology and code that can support large-scale battles with over a thousand players. Castle Sieges are one of the primary PvP events, where guilds face off against one another to claim or defend their fortress. Additionally, there will be arenas or battlegrounds where you can fight 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3.

Furthermore, the PvP in Throne and Liberty is generally instanced based, with only limited windows for open-world PvP gameplay. Currently, open-world PvP can only occur at night and then only inside of open world Dungeons.

However, this strong focus on PvP should not necessarily put off players who prefer PvE content. Although the game may have PvP at its core, it also does not require you to play PvP to advance your character. You do not have to play any of the available PvP game modes. Additionally, if you stay out of open-world dungeons at night, then you will not encounter PvP at all. Moreover, aside from a robust main story and quests, Throne and Liberty also has cooperative PvE instanced-based content including multiple dungeons.

5 Exploration and Open World Mechanics

T&L - Exploration and Open World Mechanics

Next in our top 10 things to know about Throne and Liberty we take a look at the game’s unique approach to world exploration and mounts. Instead of collecting creatures or contraptions to ride, your character will morph into a different form. Morphs offer a fun and engaging way for players to explore the vast world of Solisium, and provide a sense of immersion that creates a fun gaming experience.

There are three different types of morphs, that correspond to three different types of travel in Throne and Liberty:

  1. Dash Morph – Land-based creatures you automatically change into whenever you choose to sprint in game.
  2. Glide Morph – Winged creatures you transform into when clicking to ‘jump’ a second time while in the air.
  3. Aquatic Morph – Transform into a marine creature automatically whenever you enter deep water.

Dash morph creatures include wolves and big cats, Glide morphs can be eagles or ravens, and some Aquatic morphs are otters or turtles. These creatures all come in a variety of shapes and colors, helping you personalize your character. Additionally, while some special morphs can be purchased for real money, many others can be unlocked through general gameplay.

6 Pay 2 Win

T&L - Store

In an industry filled with paid DLC and microtransactions, the fact that Throne and Liberty is a free-to-play game means that many players will be skeptical about what items the company will have for sale in their cash shop. Many games skirt the line of ‘pay-to-win’, while others restrict their sales to skins, costumes, mounts, and other cosmetics only. This keeps the balance of the game fair to all players, with character progression based on player skill and time.

Unfortunately, the developers at NCSOFT have chosen to include several items and services that can directly influence player progression and character strength. This is why it warrants a spot on our top 10 things to know about Throne and Liberty. Items such as Growthstones, Precious Parchment, and Precious Marind are used to upgrade gear. You will need many of these to fully optimize and upgrade your armor, weapons, and even skills. And all of these things can be purchased in the cash shop.

Moreover, the most prominent pay-to-win aspect of Thrones and Liberty is the Marketplace. The Marketplace is where players can sell gear pieces to each other using the game’s premium currency. This may work in your favor if you happen to get a very good drop to sell. Overall, however, this auction house is just another way for players to easily jump ahead by purchasing the best gear quickly for real money.

Consequently, while it is possible to play Throne and Liberty without spending money, your grind for items and gear will take much longer. Moreover, you will always be less powerful than someone else who paid for their progress.

7 Progression System

Throne and Liberty Progression System

There are two main systems of progression in Throne and Liberty, which focus on leveling weapon skills and leveling gear pieces. First, weapon skills are unlocked based on your character level and gaining EXP while fighting with it equipped. However, what makes these skills really impactful is upgrading them. To upgrade weapon skills in Throne and Liberty, you have to use Active or Passive Skill Growth Books. The success of these materials is RNG based, especially as you are trying to progress from green to blue to purple, etc.

Moreover, at certain levels like epic/purple, these skills can gain an additional effect. Therefore, prioritizing the right skill is absolutely essential. Otherwise, you will use valuable Growth Books unnecessarily, or have to take a risk transferring the skill.

Secondly, progressing your gear works in much the same way, but you’ll be using Growth Stones instead of books. There are tiers at end-game, but for the most part you level a weapon, piece of armor, or accessory in much the same way as skills. Weapons also have Mastery Ranks, which is another talent system. As you level it grants you small perks and bonuses based on the weapons you have equipped.

Consequently, in Throne and Liberty a lot of your game time will be spent on leveling your character, upgrading your skills, advancing the mastery tree, and upgrading your weapons and armor. By the time you reach end-game, your focus will be almost entirely on skills and gear. And if you are a free-to-play gamer, then this will be a very long grind.

8 Guilds and Social Systems

Throne and Liberty Guilds and Social Systems

Guilds are a crucial element of group gameplay and socializing in Throne and Liberty, and you can join one as soon as you hit Level 3. Whether you are looking for something casual or hardcore, you should be able to find a guild that suits your goals and playstyle. You can also choose to create your own guild, with no requirements to wait until you’re at a higher level.

Becoming a member of a guild will allow you to access a guild merchant, where you can spend Guild Coins. New gameplay modes become available, as well, with a duel arena where players can challenge each other to PvP. Moreover, as a group, you can take on Guild Contracts, PvE Raids, and PvP group events such as Castle Sieges.

Furthermore, if your guild is ambitious, you can all focus on increasing your Guild Ranking. Ranking can be used to determine guild priority in some scenarios, and can also be used as a measurement for rewards.

9 Economy and Crafting

Throne and Liberty - Economy and Crafting

Crafting is a huge and robust system in Throne and Liberty, and it will be absolutely vital to your character’s progression in the game. Consequently, it takes the number 9 spot in our top 10 things to know about Throne and Liberty list. Weapons, armor, and accessories can all be crafted or improved through the crafting system. Unlike in other games, the crafted gear is often better than what you can buy from local merchants.

You will learn the basics of crafting as soon as you reach the first hub city, Kastleton. It may seem complex, but stick with it because the investment will be worth it. Additionally, can upgrade armor and weapons using corresponding Growthstones. These can be earned while completing quests as rewards, exploring, and from the store.

Moreover, gear upgrades are not guaranteed, but are based on a percentage chance. This means you may fail when enchanting your gear, and all Growstones will be lost. Consequently, it’s best that you know from the start what weapons and armor types you want to invest in, so you lose as little of these valuable resources as possible.

10 Endgame Content

The end-game content in Throne and Liberty mostly centers around game modes that you already have access to as you play through the main story and level up. However, as you grow in strength, you will face up to harder and harder challenges. Consequently, there will always be something new to strive for.

End-game PvE content includes the Secret Dungeons, which can be played solo. Taedal’s Tower becomes available at Level 15. However, you’re unlikely to get anywhere near the top at Level 20 before the end game. Another solo activity is the Gate of Infinity. This is a weakly solo boss challenge that only becomes available after you reach Level 50.

For PvE group content there are the Co-op Dungeons. Dungeons also first become available early on in the game. But, new ones continuously unlock and each is more difficult than the last. Additionally, new levels of the Dimensional Circle become available, including one and two-star difficulties.

There isn’t anything new that unlocks for end-game PvP at Level 50. However, you should be more ready to take on the challenges of Castle Sieges, Boonstone events, and other Guild vs Guild instances. Help boost your guild’s rank for better rewards, earn Guild Coins to spend at the Guild Merchant, and get stronger together with your guildmates.
