Here are the best co-op indie horror games you can play with your friends.

Horror games offer a unique experience, especially if the execution is done correctly. The recent Indie games breakthrough has brought us many cult-classic games, including some of the best horror games to come out in years, that interweave co-op gameplay. These games can be mentally draining, but even the most dreadful situations can turn into a burst of laughter if you’re playing with your friends.
Here are the five best indie games to play with your friends.
1) Lethal Company

The game that had the whole world in a chokehold in late 2023, Lethal Company, was developed by Roblox developer Zeekers. The game follows a crew stranded in space that works for a mysterious corporation. You and your friends are tasked to meet a brutal corporate quota with a deadline of three days. The corporation’s spaceship will drop you on different monster-infested moons. There, you must collect scrap or anything else that holds significant value.
While the game is horrendously terrifying, the proximity voice chat and dodging through monsters with your friends is quite a fun experience. It successfully balances genuine scares with a proximity voice chat feature, which can be extremely hilarious with the reverb effect. In a split second, the outcome can change, and later you might see a monster dragging away your friend as you watch in horror. It is a nerve-wracking experience through and through. If you fail to meet the quota, not-so-surprisingly, the company will leave you behind to minimize its loss.
2) R.E.P.O.

A recent addition to the indie co-op horror game family, R.E.P.O. can be accurately labeled as Lethal Company’s cousin. It follows a similar pattern of finding items in a cursed place, which you will use to repay your debt.
Additionally, with proximity voice chat, the horror of being left behind lingers around every corner. From exploring eerie environments to confronting supernatural entities, the multiplayer aspect is executed perfectly to blend with the horrors.
Seeing your friends running around and screaming as the chaos unfolds is one of the most hilarious and terrifying situations you can witness. All in all, R.E.P.O. is a game full of panic-rush moments that will have you on the edge of your seat.
3) The Outlast Trials

While initially met with criticism, The Outlast Trials arose from the ashes and proved everyone wrong. Emerging from the beloved indie horror series, this multiplayer experience is packed with horror-fueled moments.
You and your friends are entrapped in a facility, and to attain your freedom, you must go through several trials. From mutilating dead bodies to escaping from a circus, the trials are long-lasting and versatile. The Outlast Trials takes the series’ helpless horror elements and turns them into an anxiety-packed experience that will stay with you for a long, long time.
4) Pacify

Pacify is a short but memorable experience where four players are researching paranormal activities in a haunted house. Funnily enough, you’re here to subdue a malevolent child spirit, and doing so will have unprecedented consequences.
My personal experience with my friends while playing Pacify was full of frantic screams and bursting laughter. Still, the jump scares are something so out of the ordinary that they will leave you shocked. The objective is simple: find the correct haunted dolls and burn them down. However, burning the wrong dolls can make a huge change.
The gameplay loop is easy to learn and hard to master. A simple horror game that combines surreal elements and implements them unusually makes Pacify a unique co-op adventure.
5) Devour

Infusing fast-paced elements, Devour puts the players in a dark place where they work together to stop a cult. The cult reportedly decides to take the whole world to hell by completing disturbing demonic rituals.
As you and your friends collect the correct items, the demonic entities in the area become aggressive and will hunt you down to stop your actions. It forces coordination upon the players and provides a chaotic experience where you will be running around the game screaming and laughing. Like Outlast, you won’t be able to fight back the demons, and the only hope of survival is your UV Flashlight. Lastly, it is a perfect game for friends who love to play games that will blow them away.
