Making DLCs is a practice that slowly gained popularity during the era of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Developers started to make additional content for the game, which consisted of more story, combat, and sometimes even new areas. While almost every game these days tends to get some form of DLC, only a few stand out as exceptional, offering way more content than any other game.
So, here are the 5 best DLCs of all time that set an example for future games.
1. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
FromSoftware’s latest DLC expansion for Elden Ring, called Shadow of the Erdtree, is easily their best work yet. They have gone above and beyond, providing content that surpasses most full games. From an open world that is bigger than most open-world RPGs to multiple bosses with in-depth moves, SOTE has content that can easily last for up to 40 hours, minimum.
It also features multiple new weapons with unique movesets, signaling the sheer amount of effort Miyazaki and team put into development.
2. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers
Final Fantasy XIV always gets new expansions almost every three years. These expansions are always full to the brim with content, especially towards the end of their patch cycle. However, what sets Shadowbringers apart is the sheer quality of the main scenario quest. Shadowbringers takes players to a completely different world, with a darker and grittier story full of rich characters and epic moments.
From start to finish, the story is an epic ride that is full of all kinds of emotions, easily making it one of the best Final Fantasy experiences.
3. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt: Blood and Wine
Blood and Wine is The Witcher 3’s second and final expansion and acts as a proper climax to Geralt’s journey. CD Projekt Red definitely outdid themselves with this one, as they added their most gorgeous, detailed, and biggest open-world area yet. Additionally, the story is also great, introducing new characters and some old ones from the books.
Alongside the brilliant main quest, the signature top-quality side quests that the game is known for are also present. All in all, you will get your money’s worth and then some with Blood and Wine.
4. Bloodborne: The Old Hunters
Bloodborne’s expansion, The Old Hunters, solidified this game as one of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s best works. For its time, it was easily the biggest expansion that FromSoftware had ever developed. Back then, rumors suggested that The Old Hunters was two DLCs that were combined into one massive expansion, and it makes sense.
The Old Hunters has three massive interconnected areas full of new enemies and bosses. Additionally, the new weapons that were introduced all boast unique movesets, further enhancing the experience.
5. Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City
The Ringed City DLC serves as the finale to the entire Dark Souls series, providing a satisfying ending to the saga. It consists of two massive areas that are full of completely new enemies, bosses, and nods to the previous Dark Souls games. In my opinion, The Ringed City still has the best boss fights that FromSoftware ever made in a DLC, even when compared to Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree.
