Indie games are known to go beyond AAA caliber with their experimental features. While many indie games come and go, some create a huge impact, like the recent blockbuster Mouthwashing.

With such hit releases, the indie games genre has garnered a lot of attention in recent times. Knowing how huge this genre has become, many new indie developers have taken the spotlight. Here are some of the best indie games releasing in 2025.

1) Hollow Knight: Silksong

A sequel to one of the most beloved indie Metroidvania adventures, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is rumored to be released this year. The game’s subreddit is always melting down and cracking theories for its release date, but it seems one of the developers has started an ARG, hinting it might release sooner than expected.

Instead of continuing the story with The Knight, Hornet will become the protagonist. The game will follow her story in the new kingdom where she’s on the journey to learn about her kidnappers. Moreover, Team Cherry is extremely silent about the game’s development, creating huge anticipation among the fans.

Silkson’s expectations are endless considering how its predecessor was hailed as a masterpiece by critics and fans alike. The fast-paced gameplay, lore-filled world, and an amazing soundtrack composed by Christopher Larkin are some key features that make Silksong the biggest indie game to look forward to in 2025.

2) Mouse: P.I For Hire

In 2017, Cuphead perfectly used the 70s cartoonish art style that we all adore for its nostalgic factor. It uniquely brought the beloved cartoonish aesthetic into the video game industry, and since then no developers decided to continue with this idea, until Mouse: P. I For Hire was announced.

Initially titled Mouse, it’s an indie game that takes the rubber hose cartoon art style and turns it black and white. The run-and-gun concept is similar to Cuphead, but the game turns it into a boomer shooter FPS with explosive action. Everything is hand-drawn, which makes it more authentic and loyal to the art style.

While the developer revealed, ‘The game will release when it’s ready,’ it’s still slated for a 2025 release window. Seeing a rendition of Cuphead’s art style after 8 years of its release is refreshing, and it is definitely something you should look forward to.

3) Sick Samurai

A top-down, extremely violent hack-and-slash game inspired by Hotline Miami, Sick Samurai takes the player into the Japanese vintage era. Replicating the elements that made Hotline Miami a controversial yet blockbuster success is something that makes it an interesting game to look forward to.

While there’s no official description of the story, the gameplay loop is super-violent with instadeath elements. For an indie game, it miraculously contains full-fledged voice acting. You’ll be hunting rogue samurai under the wing of an ex-gangster.

If you’re hungry for a fast-paced action indie game, Sick Samurai is right up your alley and is scheduled for a release in October 2025.

4) Rubinite

An eccentric pixelated indie adventure in a dark fantasy world, Rubinite infuses soul-like elements with a fluent boss rush mode. Inspired by Hollow Knight, the game has a fluid hack-and-slash combat as the protagonist, Ruby, searches for the plague’s source.

Its trailer was initially released in 2023, garnering high anticipation for its combat and lore elements that shape the game’s world. In Ruby’s conquest to restore her kingdom to its former glory, she’ll face perilous monsters hungry for blood.

If you’re a Souls series fan who strives to face hard challenges, Rubinite might be a game made for you. While there’s no specific release date, it is scheduled to release sometime in 2025 with a demo currently available for you to try.

5) Tamashika

An indie game that garnered attention for initiating the famous ’15 seconds from my indie game’ challenge on X (formerly Twitter). Having an esoteric art style with magnificent sound design and FPS shooter elements, people had mixed feelings.

According to the solo developer, the game will have unusually simple mechanics. The main objective is to create a reality and keep the flow fluid, shooting various monsters while listening to their sound cues to execute a perfect parry. Attention span is all you need to play the game as it changes the background color consistently.

Featuring an upbeat soundtrack along with procedurally generated levels, it will make every run feel unique and authentic. Even with the mixed reviews, Tamashika has become one of the most wish-listed indie games on Steam.
