2024 was filled with new releases and remasters in the RPG world. Here are the five best RPGs in our opinion that were released this year.
The year 2024 was stacked with RPGs, and finding the best RPG out of a long list can be quite the task. However, we have picked out a few numbers that you may want to try as a fan of the genre before 2024 comes to a close.
It’s not that these games will disappear in 2025, but the sooner you experience an RPG to its fullest, the better. We are not criticizing the games that were not put on this list.
We have put games on this list that pass the criterion of bringing an eye-catching mechanic to the table. Several games put in something new. So, don’t stick to this list if you are an RPG lover. Give a chance to whichever game you think is worth your time.
With that said, let’s get to this list. Note that the games are not placed in a ranked order.
1. Throne and Liberty
If you enjoy the classic MMORPG experience, Throne and Liberty may be your jam. This game has a combat experience that some RPG lovers might enjoy. You have classes to choose from, a grinding system that can be rewarding, and ample quests to keep you logged in for longer. TL also offers a weather cycle that impacts gameplay.
You also get a Guild system wherein you join a guild of players and raid different dungeons and bosses with them for greater rewards. After all, cooperation is humanity’s biggest gift.
2. Metaphor ReFantazio
Persona fans were blessed with a soul successor of the game in the form of Metaphor ReFantazio. This J-RPG developed by Atlus tapped into a combination of real-time and turn-based combat. The combat system is primarily party-based, and you have access to multiple playable characters. Many characters introduce new Archetypes which you can rank up to discover more elite Archetypes.
Every character in your party will have a separate Stat that you need to invest points into. The game’s story is also not something that you should be sleeping on. Overall, Metaphor Refantazio could be the new refreshing experience you are looking for.
3. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
When the team responsible for the series decided to remake the Final Fantasy VII story arc, they divided the games into three parts. This was done to stay true to the game’s soul and to manage the storytelling pace in the new series. Four years after the Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released to expand the story even further.
If you have been a fan of the series since the 90s, know that there are a few changes to the narrative to catch you off guard. We hope you are able to enjoy your experience in this world that manages modern combat mechanics and fuses it with the series’ old combat system. The vast world and ample number of side quests have also kept fans engaged.
4. Dragon Age: The Veilguard
BioWare started off Dragon Age with Origins. After this game, the developers worked on Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition to bring you the best RPG experience. Inquisition came out in 2014. Since then, the fans of the series were left with a cliffhanger following the end of the Tresspasser DLC. Now, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is here to continue the rich lore in the world of Thedas.
Players get to create their own characters in the beginning. Choose from any of the four races in the game: Human, Elf, Dwarf, and Qunari. You can also pick a class and faction background to add further detail to your player. You don’t have to be well-versed with the game’s lore because BioWare has crafted the story in such a way that you can enter it without much knowledge and still enjoy it.
5. Black Myth: Wukong
Little needs to be said about Black Myth: Wukong, which we count among one of the best RPGs released in 2024. The game doesn’t have MMO mechanics, nor does it have turn-based or party combat features to make it look like a typical RPG game. However, fans are still content with the game because of its rich lore and mythical exploration.
Based off of the Chinese novel Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong doesn’t dive blindly into the same story. Instead, it creates its own identity by introducing a different character. That’s right. You don’t play as Sun Wukong but as The Destined One, who is out in the world to retrieve parts of the Monkey King and revive him.
This concludes our list of the best 5 RPGs released in 2024. The list was subjective and may differ completely from your opinion. However, if you haven’t tried any of these games, we would like for you to experiment and discover things on your own!
