Everything about bosses in Black Myth: Wukong

Bosses are the meat and potatoes of the entire Black Myth: Wukong experience. Like other contemporary action RPGs like Dark Souls, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring, Black Myth: Wukong’s primary gameplay loop revolves around boss fights. Although the game features its fair share of exploration, build crafting, and quests, most of it is usually connected to a boss or mini-boss encounter. While Black Myth: Wukong isn’t necessarily a “boss rush” per se since there’s plenty of downtime between major encounters, it does feature a heavy emphasis on boss fights, which makes up for the bulk of content the game has to offer.

Most of the boss fights in Black Myth: Wukong are melee brawls, with a few being gimmick-based, akin to something like Demon Souls’ Tower Knight or Dark Souls’ infamous Bed of Chaos. There are also optional secret bosses in every single chapter of the game, and these optional bosses often require completing a rather lengthy side quest or obtaining a key item. Furthermore, the optional bosses are also some of the most spectacular and challenging encounters in Black Myth: Wukong, far surpassing most of the mini-bosses and even some of the main story bosses in the game.

Bosses like Erlang, the Sacred DivinityThe DuskveilFuban, and Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast are completely optional and missable despite being some of the hardest encounters in the entire game. While most of the bosses in Black Myth: Wukong offer a fair challenge, some feel too overturned or “harder” than the rest. Here are the 5 hardest bosses in Black Myth: Wukong that are bound to be a roadblock for many players.

Hardest bosses in Black Myth: Wukong

The hardest bosses in Black Myth: Wukong are Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, Great Sage’s Broken Shell, Scorpionlord, Yellow Loong, and Supreme Inspector. Not only do these bosses hit incredibly hard, but they also boast attacks and abilities that require sharp reflexes and proper timing to dodge/avoid. Furthermore, most of these bosses have their own elemental affinities, which they can use to inflict additional damage or impair certain attributes of the Destined One. These five bosses are the true test of mettle and combat skill in Black Myth: Wukong. However, they aren’t impossible to defeat as long as you come prepared with the right build and combat tools.

Other bosses like the Emerald-Armed MantisYaksha KingBishui Golden-Eyed Beast, and Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master are also quite challenging. However, they don’t hold a candle to the likes of Erlang Shen, Great Sage, or even the Scorpionlord regarding sheer strength and aggression. Erlang Shen and Great Sage, in particular, are easily the toughest encounters in the entire game, which is fitting considering both of them are technically the final bosses of Black Myth: Wukong. Here are the 5 hardest bosses in Black Myth: Wukong ranked hardest to easiest:

  1. Erlang, the Sacred Divinity
  2. Great Sage’s Broken Shell
  3. Scorpionlord
  4. Yellow Loong
  5. Supreme Inspector

5) Supreme Inspector

  • Boss: Supreme Inspector
  • Chapter: Chapter 6 (Mount Huaguo) – Mandatory
  • Element: Fire and Lightning
  • Weak against: Plantain Fan and Frost (Apramana Bat)

The Supreme Inspector is the first major boss that the Destined One will have to face in the final chapter of Black Myth: Wukong – Mount Huaguo. And for the starter boss of the game’s finale, the Supreme Inspector perfectly fits his role, setting an example of the difficulty you will have to overcome to reach the true ending of Black Myth. The Supreme Inspector is like the Valkyrie bosses from God of War (2018), featuring a mix of ground-based AOE and aerial attacks. Furthermore, the boss can inflict not one but two elemental statuses – Burn and Shock. On top of that, the Supreme Inspector has a ton of health, which, even with a weapon as powerful as the Tri-Point Double-Edged Spear, takes quite a lot of time to chip away at.

Thankfully, if you come prepared with the Apramana Bat Spirit ability and the Plantain Fan Vessel, you can make quick work of the boss. The Plantain Fan, in particular, comes in incredibly handy here, as it can completely negate the boss’ second phase, and the Apramana Bat can freeze and inflict frost. Furthermore, Spells like Immobilize and Cloud Step work wonders against the Supreme Inspector. Make sure you’re saving the Plantain Fan for the second phase, when the boss summons fire that engulfs half of the arena. Using the Plantain Fan in the second phase not only staggers the boss for a good few seconds, but also removes the flames making the battle much easier.

4) Yellow Loong

  • Boss: Yellow Loong
  • Chapter: Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow) – Optional
  • Element: Lightning
  • Weak against: Frost and Fire (Red Tides)

The Yellow Loong is arguably the toughest mid-game boss you will face in Black Myth: Wukong. Fortunately, it’s an optional encounter, and most players can easily skip past it if they’re not keen on completing everything the game has to offer. However, if you do power through this boss fight, you will be rewarded with easily one of the most powerful weapons in Black Myth: Wukong, only second to the Jingubang. The Loongs are some of the game’s most challenging enemies despite being weak to almost all the elemental affinities and prone to stance-break. However, the ability to inflict Shock alongside access to some of the most devastating combos, makes the Loongs a force to be reckoned with, especially the Yellow Loong.

Not only does Yellow Loong inflict Shock with all of his attacks, but the boss is also equipped with some of the most “hard-to-dodge” combos, which can feature a string of up to 8 simultaneous attacks. Thankfully, since it is an optional encounter, you can return to duke it out against the Yellow Loong even after finishing the main story with more powerful weapons and armor sets.

To defeat Yellow Loong in Black Myth Wukong, use the Immobilize Spell and the Apramana Bat Spirit Transformation ability. Yellow Loong, like the Red and Black Loongs, are highly vulnerable to Frost status and take extra damage when frozen. It’s also a good idea to invest some points in the A Pluck of Many Spell. This battle is a test of endurance, especially if you tackle the boss before acquiring Jingubang, the most powerful weapon in the game.

3) Scorpionlord

  • Boss: Scorpionlord
  • Chapter: Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow) – Optional
  • Element: Poison
  • Weak against: Fire and Frost (Apramana Bat)

The Scorpionlord is another boss in Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow) that, despite being an optional encounter, is incredibly challenging, perhaps even more so than some of the end-game bosses. What makes the Scorpionlord difficult to deal with is his speed, aggression, and endless combos to which he has access. Furthermore, the Scorpionlord also inflicts Poison with most of his attacks, which can quickly eat away at the Destined One’s HP in seconds. On top of that the Scorpionlord has a “tail swipe” which he can then chain into a string of 5 consecutive attacks. Regarding attack speed and aggression, the Scorpionlord even surpasses Yellow Loong.

How to Beat Scorpionlord

Thankfully, the boss doesn’t have much in the way of defense and can be defeated easily with weapons like the Staff of Blazing Karma or the Red Tides Transformation Spell, both of which inflict Burn status. Furthermore, the Apramana Bat or the Wandering Wight Spirit abilities are really helpful against the Scorpionlord as they deal a ton of damage and also stagger the boss. Start the battle with Apramana Bat’s ability to freeze (immobilize) the boss in its place. Follow that up with A Pluck of Many to summon your clones, as well as a charged-heavy attack. The clones will distract the Scorpionlord for quite a while, giving you ample time to sneak in a few attacks and charge your Focus gauge.

Once you have 3 or more charges in your Focus gauge, use Immobilize to freeze the boss in place and use another charged-heavy attack. We highly recommend using the Thrust Stance for this boss fight as it gives you plenty of range, as well as the ability to quickly use the charged-heavy attack without lengthy downtime.

2) Great Sage’s Broken Shell

  • Boss: Great Sage’s Broken Shell
  • Chapter: Chapter 6 (Mount Huaguo) – Mandatory
  • Element: None
  • Weak against: None

The fight against Great Sage’s Broken Shell provides an appropriate challenge for an end-game boss. However, his second phase can feel a bit overpowered due to the sheer number of attacks he unleashes and the way he uses them. The final boss battle in Black Myth: Wukong unfolds in four phases. During the first two, the Destined One battles the Stone Monkey, a relatively easy opponent. But in the last two phases, the protagonist faces the Great Sage—Sun Wukong’s remaining mortal shell, stripped of his six senses. The Great Sage mirrors the Destined One (or Wukong) but with all his abilities and skills maxed out.

How to Beat Great Sage’s Broken Shell

He has access to almost every single ability that the player has, but he is much more powerful. Furthermore, he is extremely resilient against most elemental affinities, which makes him even more challenging. On top of that, in the final phase, the Great Sage essentially “nerfs” the Destined One, taking away the “Wukong Stance” further increasing the difficulty of the battle. This boss fight is based on player skill, much like Sekiro’s Isshin, the Sword Saint. To defeat the Great Sage, your dodges, charged attacks, and Stance abilities must be on point, with minimal errors.

Also, if you’re having a particularly hard time with the Great Sage, we highly recommend using the Medicines to buff your Critical Hit Chance as well as base attack power. This is especially helpful in the final phase. As for the Spirits, you’d want to use something that deals a ton of burst damage like the Erath Wolf, or the Wandering Wight. You can also go with the Apramana Bat, but since Great Sage isn’t particularly weak to Frost, it won’t be as effective as it is against other bosses in the game.

1) Erlang, the Sacred Divinity

Erlang, the Sacred Divinity (Image via GameScience)
  • Boss: Erlang, the Sacred Divinity
  • Chapter: Chapter 3 (The New West) – Optional
  • Element: Lightning (primary) and All elements (secondary, based on the elements used by the player)
  • Weak against: Plantain Fan, Fire, and Frost (Apramana Bat)

Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, is the hardest boss in Black Myth: Wukong on our top 5 list because of his abilities and stagger bar. Even surpassing the Great Sage in terms of difficulty. Not only does Erlang test all the abilities the Destined One has access to, but he also presents a unique form of challenge – a dedicated stagger bar. Unlike other bosses, to deal damage to Erlang’s healthbar. First, you must deplete his stagger bar, which he can replenish instantly. Dealing damage to the stagger bar also deals a slight amount of damage to the boss’ HP. However, that amount is minuscule compared to the damage you can deal after shattering his stagger bar. Furthermore, Erlang also inflicts Shock with his Spear attacks and can nullify the Destined One’s Transformation Spell.

However, if you come prepared with the Plantain Fan Vessel and the Golden set, you can easily deplete Erlang’s stagger bar and open him up for critical hit damage. Furthermore, spells like immobilize and rock solid work wonders against the boss if they are worked properly. Much like the Great Sage, Erlang is also heavily centered around skill, requiring practice and perseverance to overcome.
