Although Silksong might be similar to its prequel, Hollow Knight, there are some key differences you should be aware of.
Being a sequel to one of the most popular platformers of all time, Hollow Knight Silksong has heavy boots to fill. After seven years of drought, Team Cherry finally unveiled the long-awaited sequel and confirmed a September 2025 release. They also released a trailer, which showed a bunch of new gameplay from the highly anticipated title. With this, we could see a lot of similarities, but more importantly, a ton of key differences as well. Here are some changes you should be expecting before you dive into Hollow Knight Silksong.

5 Key Differences Between Hollow Knight Silksong and Hollow Knight
The major differences, some of which are obvious from a first glance (while others aren’t), are:

1. Main Character
This is one of the most obvious differences between this game and the prequel. The main character of the original game was the ‘Silent’ Knight or just the Knight. Meanwhile, Hornet was originally introduced as an enemy, who later turns into an ally by the end of the game. Silksong will be the continuation of Hornet’s adventure.

2. Plot, World, and Setting
Hollow Knight was set within the dying insect kingdom of Hallownest. On the other hand, Silksong takes place within a different setting, a place known as Pharloom. Moreover, the overall plot and atmosphere are likely also going to be vastly different. The prequel’s story was about defeating or sealing the Radiance. However, Hornet was captured and brought to Pharloom. This shift will be interesting to explore, as players will have to journey across an unfamiliar kingdom.

3. NPC Interactions and Quests System
The ‘Silent’ Knight was called that due to its trademark ‘silence.’ However, Hornet is not the same as the Knight. She can talk with various NPCs and help them with various tasks. Another major change will be a fully fledged quest system. There was no specific quest system. You had to manually remember your tasks and complete each one. However, Hornet will have a quest system available to her, which records the quests she can undertake. This will be a great addition to the sequel.
4. Combat
The combat in Hollow Knight is praised for its simplicity and precision. At the same time, it is extremely effective and quite deep if you want to master it. Hornet will have access to a wider range of tools compared to the Knight. This will not only make combat more complex but also give you a wider range of options to use as you deem fit. Moreover, the prequel’s combat was mostly limited to horizontal and vertical directions. However, Hornet has been seen moving diagonally as well. This will surely add another layer of depth to this combat.
5. Crafting
The Knight is limited to a singular weapon (and certain spells) for combat. On the other hand, Hornet will have a more diverse moveset, as she will be able to craft new weapons, traps, and other mechanisms. These will help her out in combat and make your life easier. This is another feature that was not seen before.
