The newly released Mario Kart World has a lot of major differences compared to its predecessor, Mario Kart 8. Here are some of them.
Mario Kart World is the latest game in the incredibly popular Mario Kart series. As in previous games in the series, players take control of various Mario characters as they participate in go-kart racing.
Mario Kart World has been in the works for quite some time. It is releasing more than 10 years after the last game in the series, Mario Kart 8. As a result, the game brings many new features that set it apart from previous games in the series. Here are five major differences between Mario Kart World and Mario Kart 8.

1. Mario Kart World Has a Larger Playable Roster
In Mario Kart 8, you could play as a total of 36 characters. In the deluxe edition, several new additions caused that number to jump up to 48. Mario Kart World, on the other hand, has a roster of 50 characters from the get-go. Along with this, many characters have multiple alternative costumes.
Mario Kart World has the largest playable roster of any game in the series so far. And with the inclusion of future DLCs, that number is only going to get larger from here.
2. Mario Kart World Has New Movement Options
Mario Kart 8 introduced anti-gravity sequences, in which players had to race on walls on ceilings. However, its sequel is not looking to be outdone, as it introduces new jumping mechanics.
This jumping feature allows players to bridge short gaps, avoid obstacles, and more. On top of this, the game also features rail grinding, letting you ride on rails in a way that would make Tony Hawk proud.
3. Mario Kart World Introduces New Weather Mechanics
Weather mechanics are not something that is usually seen in racing games. However, Nintendo has always been a trailblazer in the industry. These weather mechanics are special conditions that equally affect all players in the game.
One such weather condition is a thunderstorm. During a thunderstorm, lightning will periodically strike all players in the game, resetting momentum. Meanwhile, the roads will become more slippery thanks to the rain. These weather conditions can be a real game-changer and can significantly affect the flow of the game.
4. More Players Can Race Together Than Ever Before
In Mario Kart 8, up to 12 players could participate in a single race. Mario Kart World doubles that number, allowing up to 24 players in one lobby. This leads to larger, longer, and more chaotic races than ever before.
5. Mario Kart World Introduces an All-New Open World
True to its name, Mario Kart World comes with the new open world feature. Players can drive all over the world, going from one course to another. Additionally, the open world has many puzzles and challenges to entice players.
A new mode compatible with the open world is the Knockout Tour. In this mode, 24 players will participate in one long race across the whole map, with four eliminations happening at each of the six checkpoints.
