In October 2024, Game Freak confirmed that it had been the target of a data breach two months earlier in August. The game developer stated that hackers got hold of sensitive information, such as personal information of employees, source code for games such as Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, and critical files for both existing and unreleased Pokemon games.

The leaks soon started circulating on social media platforms, revealing many scrapped Pokemon ideas, like designs for a Peanut and a Cassowary Pokemon. They also included alternate designs for existing Pokemon, such as Mega Charizard and Blastoise, along with details about new game modes and mechanics that Game Freak had considered but never fully developed.

Here, we’ve gathered the 5 most notable leaks from the hack.

1. Scrapped Pokemon That Can Randomly Evolve Into Any Pokemon

One of the most curious scrapped concepts was a Pokemon named Evolotto, a Normal-type Pokemon with a highly unusual mechanic: it could evolve into any Pokemon. Walking on four feet, Evolotto’s design was notably quite simple. The name “Evolotto” seems to be a combination of the words “Evolution” and “Lotto,” which hints at the random evolution process.

While the full details are unclear, fans speculate that Evolotto might have had the potential to evolve into any Pokemon, including even Legendary or Mythical Pokemon. It’s possible that its evolutions would have been limited to a specific pool.

2. Early Metagross Concept

One of the more shocking leaks revealed Metagross’ monstrous design in the early stages of development. It depicts a hybrid creature with spider-like legs, a scorpion’s tail, a skeletal body, and bony limbs. With hollow eyes and jagged teeth, it looks far more menacing than the Metagross fans know and love.

With Pokemon being mainly aimed at younger audiences, it’s easy to understand why this idea was discarded.

3. Mega Jynx

Leaks suggest Game Freak designed more Mega Evolutions for Pokemon than those included in the games. One such concept uncovered was a design for Mega Jynx. The leak was found in the files of Pokemon X and Y, the generation that introduced Mega Evolutions.

Similar to the original, Mega Jynx had a basic humanoid design with a few changes. In the new form, its hair was considerably longer, and it wore a blue cloak as opposed to the original red. No details about its typing were released; however, many speculate it would have retained its Psychic and Ice typing.

4. Pokemon Legends Z-A Leaks (Mega Zygarde and Zeraora)

Details about the much-anticipated game were uncovered through leaked discussions between creatives. According to them, fans might see Mega Evolutions of Zygarde and Zeraora featured in the game.

Apparently, the team for the anime Pokemon Horizons wanted to align their show’s events with the upcoming game’s storyline. Their discussions with Game Freak leaked, which ultimately became the source for this information. The conversations also suggested that Legends Z-A was initially going to be released in 2024.

5. Flying Type Eevee

According to leaked conversations, there were plans for a Flying-type Eeveelution. Currently, Eevee has eight forms, with the latest being Sylveon, the fairy type in Pokemon X and Y. Fans have long speculated about new types for Eeveelutions, which makes this leak particularly exciting for them.

The conversation suggests that the idea was discarded due to the concept being similar to a fan-made design. The Pokemon community has long held the belief that fan-made designs, or “Fakemons,” lead to Game Freak scrapping their ideas.
