The video game calendar for 2026 is packed with highly anticipated titles. There are huge franchises returning and new ambitious games looking to release next year. That said, there are a few standouts that players are really looking forward to. 

That said, here is a list of five of the most anticipated video games for 2026. Keep in mind that the list will only include those with a confirmed release date. This means other fan-favourites like Marvel’s Wolverine and Onimusha Way of the Sword will not be included as they don’t have an exact release date yet.

1) 007 First Light

The origin story of the legendary spy James Bond gets retold in the upcoming 007 First Light game. The game is developed by IO Interactive and is set to release on March 27, 2026. You step into the shoes of Bond’s early field days as a recruit. As you make progress, you will eventually discover the origin of his “00” status. 

If you are a fan of the James Bond series, you will know of his adventures around the world. However, this will be the first time we get to see his origin story. This is huge for the fans as we will know more about who this seemingly perfect spy is before he became the legend he is known today.

2) Nioh 3

If you want to see some samurai action, Nioh 3 might just scratch that itch. Developed by Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo, the game is set for a February 6, 2026, release. The game transitions to a broader ”open field” experience. To avoid confusion, an open field game combines large explorable zones with structured progression. Instead of freely moving around the world, you simply move between regions, each with its own objectives, secrets, and enemies.

On top of the new way of exploration, one of the mechanics is switching between Samurai and Ninja combat styles. This opens more room for versatility during fights. A demo was playable back in June 2025, which gave players a glimpse of what the game offers.

3) Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties

The Yakuza series is arguably one of the most popular Japanese video game franchises to date. That said, several players are looking forward to the upcoming Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, releasing this February 12, 2025

The game follows two stories. In Kiwami 3, players return to the shoes of the fan-favourite Kazuma Kiryu. This is a remake of Yakuza 3, upgraded with modern visuals. However, it’s not all just a remake. The second story, Dark Ties, explores the backstory of Kiryu’s rival, Yoshitaka Mine. It’s a new and separate story that players can look forward to playing. 

4) Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth mainline entry of Capcom’s legendary survival-horror franchise. The game is set for a February 27, 2026, release, making it one of the earliest games you can play next year. 

The trailer hints at a post-nuclear Racoon City. The story centers around Grace Ashcroft, who investigates a series of mysterious deaths. This led her to the Wrenwood Hotel, which is the same place where her mother died eight years before. The trailer also showcased some classic Resident Evil elements, making horror fans excited for a potential “return to form.”

Undeniably, one of the most hyped game releases for 2026 is Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6). This is the next installment of Rockstar Games’ legendary franchise, coming this May 26, 2026. The game has recorded a few delays, leading to its release in 2026. Despite this, the delay has only stoked hype and anticipation. Moreover, this has led to several communities theorizing about the story and gameplay elements despite only seeing a few teaser trailers.

The game takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida in the United States. The story revolves around a crime duo, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. This is also the first time a GTA game includes a female protagonist. Needless to say, this game will emerge as one of the biggest video game releases in 2026.
