Explore five of the most controversial streamer bans of 2024 across Twitch, Kick, and YouTube that shocked viewers.
2024 was one of the biggest years for streaming on Twitch, YouTube, and Kick. Content creators like iShowSpeed and Kai Cenat broke records on their respective platforms and reached new career heights. However, many content creators also found themselves in controversies and were banned.
Content moderation on streaming platforms is a major talking point among streamers right now. With streamers reporting up to 95% drops in ad revenue, platforms like Twitch might be at a turning point. Devin Nash, the CEO of Counter-Logic Gaming, claimed that Twitch is experiencing an “adpocalypse” due to politically insensitive and extremist content.
Streaming platforms are stricter than ever before, and 2024 had many controversies surrounding bans and content moderation. Here are the five most controversial streamer bans of 2024 across Twitch, Kick, and YouTube.
IShowSpeed Banned for “Dangerous Activities”
YouTube banned Darren Watkins Jr., aka iShowSpeed, for “dangerous activities” live on stream. On August 4, 2024, Speed went live on YouTube and streamed a stunt where he jumped over two moving cars.
The stunt went viral on YouTube, but it also drew criticism from other creators. Felix “xQc” Lengyel and Nicholas “Nich Eh 30” Amyoony claimed the stunt was fake. YouTube banned iShowSpeed two days after the livestream, and the VOD was removed. The streaming platform reinstated his channel and the stream after 24 hours, but the VOD now has an age-restricted content warning.
Kick and Twitch Issue Streamer Bans to Fousey
Rapper, influencer, and streamer Yousef “Fousey” was banned for the sixth time on Twitch in 2024 for commenting on self-harm. Soon after his Twitch ban, Kick CEO Ed Craven said on Twitter, “Fousey needs to take a step back.”
Fousey’s ban came just a month after he met the Kick CEO and re-signed with the platform. Despite the bans, Fousey continues to make comments on self-harm on social media platforms.
Kai Cenat Faces One of 2024’s Shortest Streamer Bans
Twitch streamer Kai Cenat received one of the shortest bans ever seen on Twitch during his 30-day “Mafiathon 2” subathon. While the ban itself wasn’t controversial, the incidents leading up to it were.
One of Kai’s viewers swatted him live on stream. Police officials entered Kai’s residence and investigated the streamer. Twitch temporarily banned Kai due to guidelines that prohibit potentially unlawful content. The platform reinstated Kai’s account just minutes after the police left his house.
Asmongold’s Ban Raised Content Moderation Debate on Twitch
Twitch streamer Zack Hoyt, aka Asmongold, got banned on Twitch after making statements about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Twitch banned Asmongold as it does not allow behavior that “promotes or encourages discrimination.”
After the ban, Asmongold threatened to leave Twitch for Kick or Rumble. He said:
“I will probably go to Kick and Rumble if I get f*cking banned on Twitch. Realistically, that’s what I am going to do. These people are making Twitch worse, they have already created a lot of negative publicity for Twitch and I think it’s just going to continue to get worse.”
DJ Akademiks Banned for Hosting Adin Ross on Twitch
Kick’s biggest content creator, Adin Ross, is currently banned from Twitch. After he appeared on DJ Akademiks’ stream in October 2024, Twitch immediately took action against Akademiks and suspended his account.
Adin Ross was banned from Twitch eight times during his time on the platform. His final ban was on February 25, 2023, when he showed his Kick chat on stream. Viewers spotted “racist and antisemitic” messages on the streamer’s unmoderated chat, which led to Adin’s ban on Twitch.
