Avowed is a deep RPG that is heading for full release in just a few days. However, if you only own a PlayStation for your gaming needs, it’s unclear whether you will be able to get your hands on the game ever. At launch, the game from Obsidian Entertainment will be exclusive to the Xbox Series S|X and Windows.
So, what can you do if you have an RPG itch that needs scratching? Here’s a guide on a few games that give you a similar experience as that of the impending RPG, but these are available on Sony’s console platform.

The following are some of the roleplaying games that can give you a similar experience as playing Obsidian’s latest adventure on the PlayStation consoles.

1) The Outer Worlds
Made by the same studio as Avowed, The Outer Worlds gives you your own spaceship and crew of cool party members. These can range from an android to a priest, all of whom can accompany you on missions. Also, did we forget to mention that you can travel to different planets? The story will require you to visit and explore quite a few planets. However, rather than putting you in an open world, the game’s action takes place in different zones that are pretty massive. You can explore these areas to find side quests and undertake missions from your companions too.
The Outer Worlds also features various groups and your actions throughout the game will determine your reputation with these groups. With multiple endings to unlock, perfect science fiction combat, and plenty of dialog choices, this title gives you all you can want from an RPG experience.
2) Witcher 3
In 2015, CD Projekt Red launched one of the most impressive role-playing games the world has ever seen. Although you can’t create your own character, this doesn’t limit you when it comes to making your own choices. From approaching different romance options to deciding the fate of the characters you meet in-game, the Witcher 3 is one of the best examples of choices and consequences in a video game. Being a Witcher, you also have an arsenal of special tools, weapons, and magic spells (known as Signs) to aid you in combat.
You can also collect resources to brew potions, craft legendary armor pieces, find treasure maps, take part in horse races, clear out monster nests, and much more. It has some of the best writing of any game to date, even in most of its optional quests. If you are planning to dive into The Witcher 3, also make sure to pick up its massive DLC expansions, ‘Blood and Wine’ and ‘Hearts of Stone.’
3) Cyberpunk 2077
Another CD Projekt Red masterpiece, Cyberpunk 2077, made a massive comeback after a rocky launch in 2020. If, for some reason, you haven’t picked the game up yet, make sure you buy it now. While it’s not based in a medieval setting like Avowed, the RPG mechanics of Cyberpunk 2077 shine brilliantly. You play as V, a mercenary in Night City. Set in 2077, V must race against time to find a cure to a problem that’s slowly killing him. And, during that venture, you come across a wide range of interesting characters.
The game also offers you the freedom to choose how you want to play. You can go in guns blazing, become a stealthy Samurai, or play as the ultimate hacker. Regardless of how you decide to complete missions, your fame will eventually grow in the city, opening up even more work. You can use the money you earn to buy apartments, swanky vehicles, guns, outfits, and much more. Like in The Witcher 3, make sure you do not miss out on the game’s story DLC, Phantom Liberty.

4) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition
It’s more than likely that you’ve heard of Skyrim, even if you haven’t played it yet. Released in 2011, Skyrim cemented Bethesda Softworks as a leading RPG creator of the time. There simply wasn’t any open-world video game at the time of its launch that could match just how massive Skyrim was. Bethesda managed to improve on almost all aspects when it came to Skyrim’s predecessors in the Elder Scrolls series.
Besides a huge world, Skyrim offers complete freedom to players right from character creation. They can choose from several races and set out on an adventure that can easily take more than 100 hours to complete. With hundreds of map markers to clear out and quests to handle, it is very easy to get lost in the world of Skyrim. And, with mods available on PlayStation for the game, you can further tweak the game or add community-made quests.
5) Baldur’s Gate 3
If you are looking for something a bit more recent, you should try Baldur’s Gate 3. Although an isometric RPG, with turn-based combat, the game offers deep RPG mechanics. Watch out for a steep difficulty curve though, especially if you haven’t played similar games developed by Larian Studios in the past. Like Avowed, you have to create your own character, choosing from a wide range of class options. Each class has separate abilities that you must consider carefully.
Apart from that, you should know that much of the in-game actions depend on dice rolls. However, there are different ways in which you can influence the chance of success in these rolls. Every companion you find in the game has their own plotlines and opinions. The game also lets you romance them or sometimes even kill them. This freedom to choose whatever you want to do in the game is part of the reason why players loved Baldur’s Gate 3. Eventually, the game went on to win the Game of the Year Award across several award shows.
