With sparse details available, we can only surmise what the game holds, and how it can build on the existing Grand Theft Auto legacy to become a true successor.

5 Things GTA 6 Can Do To Become a True Successor

Here are some of the things that GTA 6 needs to nail to improve on the already popular formula:

1. Make the Open World Feel More Alive

One of the biggest draws for all GTA games, whether it was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City or Grand Theft Auto IV, was the world-building. These games were always set in fictionalized versions of real cities.

Liberty City from GTA IV closely resembled the look and feel of New York City. Similarly, San Andreas from GTA V and GTA: San Andreas was based on San Francisco.

GTA 6 plans to return the series to Vice City, based on Miami, after 20+ years. Rockstar needs to ensure that this rendition of Vice City feels just as lived in and real as their previous locations. This can be achieved by recreating the iconic locations and giving them a modern touch.

The presence of interesting open-world NPC encounters can also help create the feeling of a living, breathing sandbox.

2. A Slew of Interesting Characters

The Grand Theft Auto series has always been synonymous with well-written, funny, and outlandish characters. Whether it was the banter between cousins Niko and Roman Bellic that amused fans in GTA IV, or the unpredictability of Trevor Philips in GTA V, Rockstar managed to deliver a bunch of interesting characters across the series.

Besides protagonists and characters focal to the storyline, other NPCs are often highly fleshed out. It is interesting to see how far Rockstar manages to push the envelope in this regard in GTA 6. A variety of memorable characters and backstories will make the title worthy of its moniker.

3. Character Appearance Customizations

Changing your character’s appearance using different outfits or accessories, hairstyles and tattoos has been a mainstay in the GTA franchise since GTA: San Andreas. With each new title added in the series, Rockstar has improved these customization features further.

GTA 6 may also introduce additional ways to customize how your protagonist looks and feels. Since the upcoming game will be the first Grand Theft Auto title to have a female protagonist, the developers have a lot of room to build on the player appearance and customization systems.

4. Beefing Up the Multiplayer Mode

With the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5, Rockstar introduced GTA Online, a multiplayer mode for the game. From accessing brand new content to undertaking multiplayer-exclusive heists with friends, GTA Online offered almost an endless amount of things to do.

GTA Online was a massive success for Rockstar, as evidenced by the constant updates and continued online support even 11 years after its initial release. The developer will likely want to recreate and build on this success by adding a fully fleshed-out multiplayer mode for GTA 6 when it releases.

And, if GTA 5 is any indication, players can expect interesting and unique content for this upcoming multiplayer mode for several years to come.

5. Introducing New Activities

Previous GTA games already allow you to fly planes, play golf, visit the gym to workout, grab a bite to eat at the local restaurant, participate in street races, and much more. With each new title in the series, Rockstar has allowed players to do more, and GTA 6 may not be any different in this regard.

It would be interesting to see what other activities Rockstar plans to include in the upcoming game. The studio may develop deeper systems for making money as well by improving the property ownership and stock market investment from previous entries in the series.
