The PlayStation 5 is Sony’s latest-gen console in their iconic PlayStation series, and there’s simply no shortage of games on it. While multiplayer is definitely a rewarding experience in itself, single-player experiences can often prove therapeutic at times.
These games provide deep, well-written storylines, impressive game worlds with interesting lore, and hours worth of playtime. Whether you’re looking for a deep RPG or a casual action-adventure title, the PS5 has a long list of exclusives as well as regular releases that will keep you busy.
So, as the year comes to an end, here are some amazing single-player titles on the PS5 released recently that you could check out.
The Best Single Player PS5 Games You Should Play Right Now
1. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Insomniac’s Spider-Man series is often considered one of the best (if not the best) superhero games of all time, and for good reason. The games have everything you could ask for in a superhero video game series — a superb story, meaningful progression, and of course, the power fantasy.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is an excellent sequel that includes everything fans could have asked for, most notably Venom and Symbiote Spider-Man. A lot of the issues with the first game have been improved upon, including the annoying stealth sections with Mary Jane. It also connects to the story of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which is an excellent spin-off title in its own right.
While this game came out in 2023, it has been one of the best single-player experiences in 2024. Besides, there’s a PC port coming out in early 2025.
2. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
If you’re a fan of the soulslike genre, FromSoftware has you covered with an expansive list of titles that will eat away countless hours from you. Elden Ring, the latest title from the soulslike devs, features an open-world environment and way more replayability compared to its predecessors. There are several classes you can try out, and the game is appealing to both newcomers and veterans of the genre alike.
Now, Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansive DLC for Elden Ring that continues the story, introduces a new region to explore, and has hours worth of content. If you’ve already finished the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree should be next on your to-play list. This is technically an expansion, but the amount of content you’ll get with it is akin to that of a new game.
3. Stellar Blade
If you’re looking for a more casual, action-adventure experience, try playing Stellar Blade. This is the first PS5 game from Korean developers Shift Up, so it’s an impressive feat to have made such a successful title. Stellar Blade is basically a hack-and-slash title set in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi Earth.
The combat mechanics in the game reward successful parries and evades, which in turn fill up your Beta Gauge. You can then use this to launch more powerful attacks. While the game isn’t fully open-world, there are lots of places to explore and plenty of unlockables to find. There are overworld NPCs who will offer you side quests as well.
4. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy needs no introduction to gamers, as it’s undoubtedly one of the best JRPG series ever made. Now, Final Fantasy VII is often considered one of the most popular games from the franchise, and Square Enix decided to remake the game through a trilogy. The first part of this remake trilogy is simply titled Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Meanwhile, the latest game in the series, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, is a sequel to FFVII Remake. The remakes are drastically different from the original FFVII in terms of graphics, gameplay, and even in some aspects of the storyline. So, when it comes to single-player PS5 games, you won’t find a better alternative to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
5. Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero
The latest Dragon Ball game has already won the hearts and minds of both Dragon Ball Z and fighting game fans alike. While Sparking! Zero might sound like a completely new series, it’s actually part of the iconic Budokai Tenkaichi franchise. So, if you’re familiar with any of the Budokai Tenkaichi games, this game should be right up your alley.
There are a total of 182 playable characters in the game, with 82 of them being unlockable. There’s even a new Custom game mode where you can create your own scenarios or use ones made by other players.
6. Dragon’s Dogma 2
Upon its launch earlier this year, the much-awaited sequel to Capcom’s unique ARPG received a positive reception. Much like the first game, you can create your own character (called Arisen) and follow a free-form class system (called Vocation), which is what sets it apart from other RPGs.
Another returning feature is the Pawn system, which lets you create your own Pawns (AI companions who help you in fights) and even hire Pawns made by other players. While there aren’t too many new vocations, the gameplay is quite satisfactory, and combat feels much more responsive. The character creator is also highly detailed, so you can spend hours building your Arisen and their Pawns.
7. Sonic X Shadow Generations
You can never go wrong with the Sonic games, and the latest Sonic title is Sonic X Shadow Generations. This is the second Sonic game to feature Shadow as the protagonist, where he travels across time to defeat Black Doom. The gameplay is just as you would expect from a modern Sonic title.
It has what you would expect from a side-scrolling platformer, but it also shifts to a 3D perspective like any other third-person game. If you’re looking for single-player PS5 games with an emphasis on fast-paced gameplay, this is the perfect pick for you.
8. Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong has been making headlines ever since it came out in August 2024. The game is an ARPG where you play as Sun Wukong, the legendary Monkey King from Journey to the West. While it’s not as difficult as the average soulslike game, there are some challenging boss fights that require skill and precision.
Overall, the progression system is quite rewarding, and there’s enough customization for experimenting with different playstyles. The game world in Black Myth: Wukong is absolutely stunning and features characters from Chinese mythology. In fact, many of the in-game locations are based on real historical places and buildings.
