Tite Kubo has created some of the most prominent genius in anime. Here’s eight of the smartest characters in Bleach.
When it comes to cunning, intelligent, and characters who fall into the thinker category, Bleach has it all. From the most memorable slick antagonist to the typical mad scientist type, there are plenty of options in Bleach. There are simply a lot of plot points that come out as the characters’ brilliant minds in action.
Fans might associate Bleach with Sosuke Aizen. A brilliant plotter who aimed to bring down the Soul Society. This antagonist is one of the iconic smartest characters, even among anime that has ever aired. However, there are other characters in Bleach who are close to him in terms of brain power. Some are even smarter than him. Here’s the list of the smartest Bleach characters.
8. Szayelaporro Granz
A member of Aizen’s Arrancar, Szayelaporro reigned as the number eight Espada. Being an Arrancar, he’s one of Aizen’s creations and showed an intellect way above the occasional Hollow.
Moreover, his status as an Espada means he’s one of the Arrancars that you don’t want to mess with, considering his reputation as a scientist in Espada. However, his personality fittingly depicted the mad scientist stereotype. Despite being a genius, he was also unstable and often behaved maniacally.
7. Uryu Ishida
The dasing Quincy, Uryu Ishida seemed like the typical quiet and smart student from the outside. Among his peers, he got a reputation for being a serious and analytical guy. Evidently, his judgment on situations often proved to be right. Also, as a Quincy, he grasped advanced Quincy techniques in no time.
In combat, he’s a balance of firepower and strategic maneuvers. On top of that, his academic record is highly decorated. His resourcefulness in balancing school life parallels his quick thinking when facing battles.
6. Toshiro Hitsugaya
Although Shinigami typically lives for hundreds of years, there is someone who’s considered young. Toshiro Hitsugaya wasn’t just youthful in his appearance, but also on the younger side by Shinigami standards. However, he’s the definition of a prodigy.
Even as an untrained Shinigami, he could hear his Zanpakutto’s calling. Although, he wasn’t aware of what was happening at the time. Nevertheless, Toshiro became one of the most talented Shinigami, earning the title of the captain of Division 10th in Gotei 13.
5. Gin Ichimaru
Similar to Toshiro, Gin was also a Shinigami prodigy. He graduated from the Shin’o Academy, an academy for future Shinigami, only after one year. However, he walked the same treacherous path as Aizen’s.
After becoming a Shinigami, he quickly picked up on the politics within Gotei 13 and secured a seat in Aizen’s ranks. Interestingly, he only joined Aizen to figure out Aizen’s true intention. When everything was clear, Gin promptly double-crossed Aizen. It takes a highly strategic and manipulative mind to deceive Aizen.
4. Retsu Unohana
Oftentimes, healers don’t get much credit, whether it’s in anime or other media like video games. However, restoration magic is a perfectly valid school of magic. Although, in Bleach, the healing isn’t the conventional magic you’d see in other fantasy settings. Retsu Unohana wasn’t just any healer in Bleach, she was the healer. In fact, she figured out a way to make a cure for Mayuri’s Bankai poison, which speaks volumes considering who Mayuri was.
3. Mayuri Kurotsuchi
Speaking of Mayuri, he was the designated scientist in Soul Society. He was the captain of the Division 12 of Gotei 13. Interestingly, he’s much like Szayelaporro Grantz when it comes to their typical mad scientist persona. However, he’s not just all about his look. As a researcher in Soul Society, Mayuri invented dozens of things, especially when they needed to defeat the Arrancar.
It often led him into a showdown against Szayelaporro, who was his Arrancar counterpart. For instance, Mayuri used his data-collecting bacteria to gather information about escaped enemies. Because of this, Szayelaporro Grantz’s Voodoo Doll technique was countered.
2. Sosuke Aizen
There’s no questioning Aizen’s brilliance. He has earned the title of the most iconic cunning antagonist in the whole Bleach series. He essentially fooled the entire Soul Society to steal the hogyoku. Aizen proved to be a force to reckon with among the villains in Bleach.
He carved his way into power, created the Arrancar, and achieved his advanced form. All thanks to his strategic mind and his deception. Even in the Thousand Years Blood War, Soul Society decided to enlist Aizen’s help to face the Quincy King, Ywach.
1. Kisuke Urahara
Many fans consider Kisuke Urahara the smartest character in Bleach. He’s the founder of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute and the former captain of Division 12. Kisuke Urahara recruited Mayuri into the research institute, showing that great minds flock together.
However, it’s not Urahara’s contributions that earned him the title of the number one genius in Bleach. The most important invention in Bleach was Urahara’s Hogyoku. The Hogyoku was an orb that allowed someone to attain the power of another soul race, a power that Aizen later abused.
