Dynasty Warriors: Origins has a narrowly focused story with a new protagonist alongside a group of companions. The game offers several characters including the protagonist and nine companions. The protagonists are the martial artist that has combat techniques and skilled in several weapons. This streamlined roster allows for deeper character development and a more focused narrative experience. In this guide, we’ll discuss all the characters in Dynasty Warriors: Origins and what unique features make them the best ones.

Characters Overview in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Characters in Dynasty Warriors are based on historical figures from the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. Each character has a dedicated storyline exploring their motivations and alliances. You can follow a custom character alongside historical figures, weaving into the main narrative. The characters are divided into the following four categories.

  • Other

There are 45 characters you can meet in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, but only nine (3 per faction) can fight with you in battle. Selecting a faction will only temporarily lock you out of fighting with companions from other factions. Compared with 94 characters from Dynasty Warriors 9, the number has been reduced by half. The Shu Kingdom includes idealistic Heroes of Benevolence while the Wei Kingdom includes pragmatic and ruthless realists. Other forces include Outliers, Rebels, and Wildcards characters like Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo, and Yuan Shao.

Liu Bei is a self-proclaimed emperor who fights for the common man. He wields twin swords to perform unique attacks on a battlefield. He conducts a series of quick spin slashes with each turn slanted towards right or left in alternating order. His finisher has him perform a counterclockwise spinning slash while moving forward. After that, he follows up with an ascending spin that enshrouds him within a tornado. Liu Bei also makes a dashing thrust with the right-handed sword to create lightning to stun and knock down enemies. This unique character also performs a lightning attack when he raises both swords crosswise and does a somersault strike in mid-air. This creates a large pillar of lightning in front of Liu Bei.

The companion Guan Yu is incredibly durable, wielding the Crescent Blade and balanced battle arts. He has end-game battle arts and skills, allowing for huge damage to both AOE and single target. Pick him if you want wide-sweeping AOE skills. He releases various spinning-outward slashes in a row while moving steadily. Guan Yu spins in the air to create a pillar of lightning that sends a cluster of enemies flying before striking the ground with a vertical slash. His other unique attacks involve a rotating swipe to lift closer foes into the air for an aerial flow attack. He also flings his enemies into the air by twirling his weapon in an overhead manner, creating a devastating attack.

This battle art is powerful area damage with great reach via the Lance. The Lance is also a great defensive weapon with a built-in counterattack by holding down the strong attack button. Consider him a good option for defensive.

The companion Zhao Yun is built for mobility and knocks us via the Spear and Battle Arts. With good mobility and single-target damage, you want to select Zhao Yun when one-on-one survivability is needed. Zhao Yun releases a charge thrust to stun nearby enemies. To inflict wind damage, he also does a jumping high-speed spin slash. He moves into mid-air and throws a spear to the ground to create an air burst that produces wind damage on the close enemies. This general is one of Liu Bei’s fiercest defenders at Chang Ban.

Zhuge Liang

Zhuge Liang is considered a prodigy in all three kingdoms. He assists his lord’s escape at Chang Ban upon Liu Bei’s third visit. Zhuge Liang still uses the war fan as his default weapon in the game to perform unique attacks. He electrocutes and knocks down enemies by sending four lightning bolts to the front. Zhuge Liang fires a bright green ray of light from left to right to create large light waves streaming. He also manipulates an electricity ball into revolving around Zhuge Liang in a clockwise direction before flying forward in a zigzag motion.

Pang Tong was a military strategist for Liu Bei for a short time. He spares sweet talk and stays focused on the heart of the matter. Pang Tong is affiliated with the shadow fan in the game for devastating unique attacks. He conjures a dizzying tornado by raising it in a sitting position and spins around. Pang Tong swings his weapon back and forth repeatedly to create small tornadoes. He also raises his weapon in mid-air to throw a pair of wide green tornadoes which inflict wind damage on them.

Yueying is the wife of Zhuge Liang who defeats five generals and creates her legacy. She is a smart and collected character who values patience and planning. She can be sarcastic and will criticize those who are selfish or insensitive. Moreover, she spins around to create a trio of electric balls that fall on the ground and produce lightning in a unique pattern. While floating in mid-air she calls down a shower of lightning bolts to shock enemies. Then she drops down to produce an electrified radial shockwave.

Xu Shu

Xu Shu is a character who was born in Yingchuan Commandery, Yu Province, which is now in central Henan. He was a skilled swordsman and military strategist who served Liu Bei as a military advisor. Xu Shu is associated with the Forged Letter, which refers to an incident where he switched sides. He does a crouching sword swipe, creating a slash trail. XU Shu also does rapid slashes that leave behind several trails of poison in front.

Zhou Cang

Zhou Cang is a character in the Dynasty Warriors series who was a strong warrior in the Yellow Turban Rebellion. He later became a bandit and then Guan Yu’s weapon bearer. His boatman skills were critical during Guan Yu’s naval assault at the Battle of Fancheng. He captured the enemy general Pang De during the castle’s flooding and suicide after learning that Guan Yu and Guan Ping were executed by Sun Quan’s forces. Zhou Cang does four wide fiery swings at different angles and the last one causes flames to briefly burst on the ground.

Cao Cao is a leader who dedicates himself to his ambitions. His ambition isn’t about ruling the world for the sake of holding power over others. He is affiliated with the general’s sword that performs the unique attacks. Cao Cao releases two spinning slashes with first one clockwise and the second one counterclockwise. He also delivers a series of diagonal spin swipes while moving at a brisk pace.

Cousin to the faction leader himself, Xiahou commands numerous troops and serves as Cao Cao’s right-hand man. He lost his eye to an arrow during a battle against Lu Bu. Xiahou Dun uses the Podao which is a good weapon for strong attack damage and powerful battle arts. The immortal blade battle art is a great damage ability to use in combat. Bring Xiahou Dun along when you want to swap to a front damage-based companion who has good strong attacks.

Guo Jia

He’s a beneficial combat companion because of his Divine Eagle Dance battle art. This battle art is a massive AOE costing high bravery and perfectly complements a weapon type lacking a 360 radius. Moreover, he has Tornado Dance, a powerful AOE damage skill with great mobility. Bring Guo Jia as a combat companion when you want 360 AOE and mobility.

Originally part of Lu Bu’s forces, after the leader’s death he then began to fight alongside Cao Cao. In his most famous battle, he repelled a force of over 100,000 troops with just 800 men. Zhang Liao has one of the best weapons Twin Pikes, and Spinning Gale grants great mobility. Moreover, Twin Pikes can be powerful one-on-one just using a strong attack to lift targets in the air. He’s a great option if you want to swap in combat and not rely on battle arts.

Xiahou Yuan

Xiahou Yuan is a historical figure who was a descendant of Xiahou Ying, a general in the Han dynasty. He helped Cao Cao take the blame for a serious offense, and Cao Cao later saved him. He was promoted to Administrator of Chenliu and Yingchuan commanderies. Xiahou Yuan hits enemies with a shoulder ram before throwing them higher into the air with a crouching slam attack. He also unleashes an ice-shattering shot strong enough to pierce through the sound barrier.

Xu Huang

Xu Huang is a warrior who is on a continuous path for strength. He served Wei sometime after the Allied Forces against Dong Zhuo disbanded. Xu Huang also acts as a supporting general throughout Wei’s Story Mode in Dynasty Warriors 7. He is affiliated with the Great Axe and performs unique attacks. And he launches a cleaving strike to cast down enemies by releasing a diagonal spin attack while hovering slightly above the ground. Xu Huang also performs a continuous spinning attack while in mid-air, ending the attack with a wide slash. The wide slash releases a burst of wind to deal damage to nearby enemies.

Zhang He

He is an eccentric man who is obsessed with dancing and beauty. Zhang He is affiliated with throwing knives and claws to deal damage on a battlefield. He also appears in all four stories as an officer of Orochi usually under Cao Pi’s command. And he performs a leaping spin while tossing six knives to the upper left and lower right and then throws them at surrounding enemies. Zhang He also does a sliding spin slash followed by a pivoting butterfly kick and a diagonal scratch.

Xu Zhu

Xu Zhu is a character in the Dynasty Warriors video game franchise. He first appears in the game as a bodyguard for warlord Cao Cao during his campaign against Tao Qian. He is a loyal bodyguard to Cao Cao. And he is so devoted to his duties that he prevents assassins from killing the warlord. He also becomes friends with Dian Wei during his time as a bodyguard. Xu Zhu rolls forward on the ground while holding the club horizontally. This stuns the surrounding enemies along the way. He also delivers several fierce overhead slams to the front while circularly lugging the club after each hit.

Dian Wei Dian Wei acts as one of Cao Cao’s early bodyguards and gains special recognition from his lord. Dian Wei creates a whirlwind by tossing the axe forward and then disperses it into radial gusts. He also walks forward continuously and inflicts several overhead chops to the front in a row.

Yue Jin

Yue Jin is a veteran general who served Cao Cao since he first raised an army. He fought in many of Cao Cao’s campaigns. He has been a generic Wei NPC in the Dynasty Warriors series since its second title. Yue Jin was recruited alongside Li Dian by Xiahou Dun for the preparations against Dong Zhuo. He is afflicted with twin rods and dual hook blades. Yue Jin launches a leaping strike with both rods followed by a swooping dive attack to quickly cast down airborne foes. He also performs a series of low-arcing slashes while zigzagging into the air to create electric radial shockwaves.

Li Dian

Li Dian originated in Juye County, Shandong, China. He was a follower of warlord Cao Cao and fought in the Yellow Turban Rebellion. He was known for his easygoing personality and clever mind and was a skilled predictor of enemy traps and ambushes. LI Dian does a sweeping diagonal strike to the lower right to create a mobile shockwave that mows down enemies. He also lands two slashes aimed at the upper right and lower right before pivoting to repeat the process.

Yu Jin

Yu Jin originated from Juping County in the Taishan prefecture. He is a general who served Cao Cao since he first raised an army. He surrendered to Guan Yu and was frail during the siege of Fan Castle. Yu Jin delivers a powerful charge thrust that deals damage by releasing two diagonal slashes aimed at the lower left and lower right. Yu Jin also releases downward slashes to the lower left and lower right while stepping forward.

Zhenji is a character in the video game Dynasty Warriors: Origins who was supposedly favored by Cao Pi when he first saw her. She is a speed and technique type character in the game that wields Flute. She produces a stream of sound waves by playing flute to deliver a kick while surrounded by blue and violet petals. Zhenji also moves forward to deliver an upward flying kick that launches enemies into the air.

He spins around as the weapon briefly entwines Xun You’s body, then swings it to unleash a powerful tornado. Xun You also whip the weapon around in a looping motion while walking forward to release even faster whipping motions to freeze enemies.

Jia Xu is a strategist who has been highly praised for his sly wit. He has been a Wei NPC since its second title before his Dynasty Warriors playable appearance. He appears at the side of Orochi’s army during the earlier stages of the game in Warriors Orochi. Jia Xu still uses the chain and sickle as his default weapon. Jia Xu perform a sweeping spin kick before doing a rising slash towards the upper left. He also delivers wide horizontal slashes from left to right multiple times while skidding back and forth.

Xun Yu is an advisor to Cao Cao whose talents as a strategist were compared to those of Sima Yi. He was a generic officer since Dynasty Warriors 3 before his playable appearance. His name is in the English localization of the first Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Xun Yu is affiliated with the throwing knives to perform unique attacks on the battlefield. He unleashes two volleys of five knives thrown at a fan arc and then uses the sparks they leave behind to conjure three lightning bolts. He also Hurls a flurry of twelve knives flying at a wide but slanted fan arc while walking slowly.

Sun Jian delivers a leaping fiery slash done vertically followed by a slam that triggers a radial explosion on the ground. Sun Ce

Ce is the eldest son of Sun Jian, a warlord during the Later Han period. He is known for his bravery and energy, and for laying the foundation for the state of Wu. He was the older brother of Sun Quan, who later founded the Wu dynasty. Sun Ce established the foundation for the state of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period. Sun Ce still uses the tonfa as his default weapon. He drags the sickle to the ground for a brief moment before unleashing a delayed upward strike. He also performs a series of diagonal spin slashes aimed at the upper left.

Sun Quan

He was the first emperor of the Wu dynasty in China. He was the second son of Sun Jian and Lady Wu. Sun Quan became emperor at age 18 after his older brother, Sun Ce, was assassinated. Sun Quan is affiliated with the flame blade to deal devastating damage on a battlefield. Sun Quan ignites the weapon in time to perform a flaming uppercut slash, leaving behind a radial explosion. He also performs a continuous flaming spin slash accompanied by criss-crossing fiery slices.

While Gauntlets” strong attack mechanic is a bit clunk, his overall powerful battle arts make up for the weapon types’ limitations.

Gan Ning is a reputed Wu general. He led a pirate group that infamously wore bells to “warn” their enemies of their impending doom during his youth. He steps forward and swings his sickle to the lower left to stun enemies. He also does a diagonal spin slash in the air and a wider ascending swing upon landing.

Lu Meng

Lu Meng is also a character in Koei’s Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi video game series. He is a general of Wu who is known for his strength and strategic knowledge. He appears in all installments of Koei’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms strategy game series. Lu Meng is affiliated with the pike to perform unique attacks. He moves into the air and stabs Pike on the ground causing a fiery explosion that spreads around the area. Lu Meng also launches several horizontal swipes from left to right repeatedly.
