While the highlight of most shonen anime is the fight between the protagonist and antagonist, One Piece is a series where there are several memorable main characters. Due to this, not all strong villains get to fight Luffy, serving as the goal for the other cast members. However, due to the expansive nature of the series, others are being built up to face the protagonist but haven’t gotten the chance yet. 4 strong One Piece villains who never got to fight Luffy include:
1) Blackbeard
As the harbinger of chaos and wielder of the evil Dark-Dark Fruit, Blackbeard has been responsible for a lot of events in One Piece. While fans were hoping he could be a potential ally due to his similarities with Luffy, he turned out to be a selfish and cunning man.
Blackbeard’s contribution to Ace’s death and the capture of Garp have already made him heavily connected to Luffy. Both villain and hero are some of the strongest figures in the series, actively competing to find the One Piece. Hence, many fans expect Blackbeard to be one of the final antagonists of the series, causing an earth-shattering battle against Luffy.
Therefore, this is a distinctive case where the villain has not yet fought Luffy but is most likely going to end up fighting him in the future.
2) Big Mom
Luffy’s role in the Whole Cake Island Arc where he invaded Big Mom’s territory to save Sanji made many believe that the Straw Hat would finally face the Yonko. Unfortunately, Big Mom’s soul manipulation powers would have posed serious danger to Luffy, due to which he majorly spent time avoiding her.
In the latter part of the arc, he and his crew only used her cravings and rampage to escape the island. Later in Wano, they still didn’t fight as Big Mom was busy dealing with the multiple factions attacking her.
She finally faced defeat due to Kid and Law’s combined efforts while Luffy was busy with Kaido. Due to this, she was one Yonko who wasn’t destined to face the protagonist.
3) Mihawk
The world’s strongest swordsman, Mihawk, is another ridiculously powerful individual who has never faced Luffy. While their respective roles as a former Warlord and the protagonist would give a reason for their clash, it is highly unlikely for this to occur in the series.
This is because Mihawk is the benchmark of Zoro, the Straw Hat Pirates’ main swordsman. Clashing earlier with him in the Baratie, Zoro faced brutal defeat but set his eyes on his target. Due to this, he has been making immense strides towards finally reaching the level where he can defeat Mihawk.
Due to this, despite being a powerful figure in the series, many fans are looking forward to Zoro’s clash with him rather than Luffy’s.
4) King
King is Kaido’s right-hand man who was a major villain in the Wano Arc. Despite only being the Yonko’s subordinate, King is extremely powerful, controlling fire, turning into a lunarian-pteranodon hybrid, and showing fearsome prowess with his sword.
However, in the quest for liberating Wano, Luffy’s sights were set at the very top—fighting Kaido. Due to this, Zoro and Sanji were assigned to hold back King and Queen. King’s abilities were fully displayed when he pushed Zoro to the edge of death. In response, the Straw Hat overcame his limits and won with his three-sword style.
Hence, King was a stepping stone for Zoro to level up. He wasn’t meant to be an obstacle for Luffy, who was rising to the level of Yonko himself.
4 One Piece Villains Who Shouldn’t Have Fought Luffy
Over the course of One Piece, Luffy has fought a variety of villains, strong and weak. While the powerful opponents helped him grow, the non-intimidating ones often ended up looking ridiculous. 4 One Piece villains who shouldn’t have fought Luffy are:
1) Bellamy
Bellamy the Hyena was an overconfident villain who didn’t recognize Luffy’s potential upon meeting him. In the Jaya Arc, this cocky pirate wanted to test the protagonist and unnecessarily pushed Luffy’s head into the counter.
While the Straw Hat refused to fall for his provocation, they faced off again when Luffy wished to retrieve gold stolen by the antagonist. Bellamy refused to believe Luffy’s powers and started hitting him with spring-like abilities. In response, Luffy swiftly beat him down with a devastating punch. This marked the end of a villain who overestimated himself and stuck around for longer than necessary.
2) Buggy
Buggy the Clown is a beloved One Piece villain who played a major role in the Orange Town Arc. While his Bara Bara no Mi seemed powerful in the first half of One Piece, in hindsight, it was a laughable match-up against Luffy.
His fight with the Straw Hats and Luffy was a hilarious affair where the protagonist tickled his feet, and kicked him under the belt, and even a weakened Nami was able to leave damage. Finally, the battle ended with Luffy easily defeating him and throwing him off the island.
Buggy may have been a fascinating villain at the time, but his current role in One Piece as comic relief makes fans wonder why he ever fought the protagonist.
3) Alvida
Alvida was the very first villain to face Luffy, soon after the Straw Hat had taken to the seas and befriended Koby. Her large appearance and brutish mannerisms give fans the impression that she would pose a threat to the protagonist.
However, Luffy was carefree throughout the battle and showed off the flexibility of his Gomu Gomu no Mi. With a Gomu Gomu no Pistol, he comfortably defeated his opponent. While Alvida has become more attractive in the latter half of the series, she hasn’t really become stronger.
Due to this, her confrontation with Luffy remains a heavy mismatch and unmemorable.
4) Hody Jones
As the captain of the New Fish-Man Pirates, Hody Jones was a villain in the Fish-Man Island Arc who severely hated humans. He had committed several atrocities for the sake of carrying on his ideals of discrimination, regardless of who had to fall.
While his position as a primary antagonist made many believe he was powerful, his strength was based on the steroids that he used. Despite overdosing on these drugs and gaining a monstrous appearance, Luffy destroyed him with a Red Hawk Punch.
Hody Jones’ philosophies heavily mirrored Arlong, but he was not able to pose a threat to the constantly growing protagonist. Due to this, while the series had created a lot of anticipation for his role, he ended up being a disappointing opponent.
