Many players might be looking for a new JRPG to play in 2025. Here are the top 5 JRPGs you should be playing this year.
Japanese Role-Playing Games, or JRPGs for short, are a subgenre of RPGs. JRPGs are getting more and more popular by the year, and many people might be looking for a good JRPG to sink some time into. We’ve got you covered.
Here are 5 (old and new) JRPGs you should consider playing in 2025.
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake
The original Dragon Quest 3 is already regarded as one of the best JRPGs ever made. Now, this remake takes that old game and paints it with a fresh HD-2D improving the already well-regarded game.
Dragon Quest features a plethora of jobs, which you can customize for your party. Additionally, the combat is based on turn, which gives you a lot of depth in the combat, when combined with the job system. Even if you have played the original Dragon Quest 3, this remake should be worth playing.
Metaphor: ReFantazio
The 2024 RPG Game of the Year winner by ATLUS and Studio Zero was released in 2024 to critical acclaim. This game takes many systems from other traditional JRPGs and flagship ATLUS titles like Shin Megami Tensei and the Persona series. It incorporates the Press Turn system, along with the Calendar and Social Link system from Persona, seamlessly into one game.
The game has a gripping narrative that will take you well over 60-70 hours to complete while being set in a medieval world. Narrative-focused JRPG enthusiasts will most likely enjoy this game.
Like a Dragon: Yakuza /Infinite Wealth
The Like a Dragon series is the continuation of the Yakuza games from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios. The game features old and new characters from the Yakuza series, so fans old and new alike can enjoy these games. The newest title in the Yakuza series, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, is right around the corner, so if someone wants to jump aboard the Yakuza ship, starting with Like a Dragon is your best bet.
The Like a Dragon series shifted from real-time action to turn-based combat. Therefore, turn-based combat players will likely enjoy the Yakuza series now if they didn’t before.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The newest entry and remake of the classic Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth changes up a lot of mechanics and aspects from the original Final Fantasy 7 game. Rebirth features a sprawling open world to explore, along with various mini-games you can immerse yourself in along the way. Its story can also span upwards of 50-60 hours, so strap yourself in for the ride.
You can shape your relationship with your party members with your dialogue choices as well. The combat has also improved drastically over its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake. If you’re a fan of the Final Fantasy series, this game should be on your radar.
Octopath Traveler 2
Another entry by Square Enix, Octopath Traveler is a renowned name in the JRPG communities. This sequel takes everything present in the original Octopath Traveler and amps it up or improves it. The game features turn-based combat combined with a job system, making it more of a traditional JRPG in that sense. You play as 8 characters, and you go through each character’s story sequentially to experience an overarching plot that brings all these characters together.
Octopath Traveler was the first game to use the HD-2D art style, and the sequel is no different. Fans of old-school JRPGs will surely find Octopath Traveler (and its sequel) a blast to play.
Those were 5 JRPGs that you should be playing in 2025. What other JRPGs are you playing in 2025?
