The Roguelike genre has forced its way into mainstream gaming, with several popular titles now regularly making their way onto GOTY lists, and rightfully so. This is a genre hyper-focused on gameplay, and boy, do they nail their gameplay. Roguelike games boast addictive gameplay loops and incentivize players to master their mechanics through repetition and practice.

With so many Roguelike games having been released over the past few years, it is now a little difficult to filter through so many titles to pick out the best ones—doubly so on PC, where almost every third game on Steam is seemingly a Roguelike. If you’re a PC user and want to know which Roguelikes are the best, our guide has you covered. In this guide, we shall go over the five best Roguelike games you should play on PC.

1) Hades

By far the most popular Roguelike ever made, Hades got its flowers at The Game Awards 2020 and has since gone on to become a staple for indie Roguelikes. The game follows the story of Zagreus, son of Hades, as he tries to make his way out of the underworld to find his mother. The gameplay is tight, with all the weapons being pieces of Greek history. The narrative is the game’s strongest aspect and accounts for all of your deaths and completed runs. Very few Roguelikes get close to this.

2) Dead Cells

“Kill, die, learn, repeat” is the tagline Dead Cells uses in promotional materials, and no four words could encapsulate this game better. The game combines the combat repetition of Roguelikes with the sense of progression of Metroidvanias to stellar results. The gameplay is fast-paced and addictive, and there are secrets around every corner. The game also boasts a gorgeous art style, enhanced by its pixel graphics.

3) Balatro

Another game that got its due respect and flowers at The Game Awards 2024, Balatro is as unique as a Roguelike can possibly get. Balatro mixes the repetition and progression of a Roguelike with the chance-based gameplay of poker cards. The combination is absolutely genius, and the two styles complement each other and gel together seamlessly. With so many card combos to master and experiment with, you’ll be playing this one for hours.

4) The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

We were a bit confused between The Binding of Isaac and its remake, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, and decided to pick the remake due to the various quality-of-life enhancements. The game features over 100 dungeons, with over 50 bosses. There’s a ton of weapon variety, and the game’s story is surprisingly deep, too. Even if you’ve played the original, we recommend giving Rebirth a shot, as it features redesigned enemies and over 150 new unlockables. There’s a ton of content here.

5) Slay the Spire

The final game on this list has a very different approach to its combat. Slay The Spire is a deck-builder Roguelike that incorporates card-based gameplay into its combat. Each card has different effects and purposes, and they’re generated randomly. Slay The Spire is slower than the other Roguelikes on this list in terms of pace but offers a greater degree of strategy due to its turn-based gameplay. Since the decks are randomized in each run, each run is a fresh experience.
