Trying to master fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds? Our guide explores all you need to know about fishing and getting lures.

Fishing might not sound like an important activity in Monster Hunter Wilds, given just how many monsters and resources you have to collect. However, mastering fishing can do more than just help you unwind between stressful hunts. Some of your catch can provide useful materials that boost your stats when prepared as part of meals.
So, in this guide, we’ll take a look at fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds and how you can get your hands on lures.
How Can You Begin Fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds

Very early in the game, you’ll find a fishing rod. You don’t need to undertake a special activity or quest to gain this item, so don’t worry about missing out on it. In fact, when you arrive at the Windward Plains camp, you will also undergo a tutorial that teaches you the basics of the fishing rod. You will get further information and guidance on fishing from Kanya through a small optional quest titled “Fishing: Life in Microcosm.”
But just in case you are unable to understand the complicated instructions the game offers, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Step 1: From your radial menu, go to Essential Items. Select the fishing rod.
- Step 2: With the fishing rod in your hunter’s hands, follow the button prompts on the screen to cast your line in the water. For mouse and keyboard, you have to hold the right click and then left click to release the line. The white mark on the water shows where the line will be cast, so make sure you pick the right place near your target fish.
- Step 3: Keep the line stationary until a fish bites. You will know when a fish is caught on your line as there will be splashing in the water, and the controls on screen will prompt you to reel it in. On PC, you can reel in the fish using the left mouse button or the W and S buttons on your keyboard.
- Step 4: Press the button indicated to reel in the fish. Pressing this button will reel in the line completely rather than gradually, so make sure you’ve caught a fish before hitting the reel-in button.
If casting the line doesn’t lead to a fish grabbing it, you can jiggle the line a bit. This should attract fish quicker. In the case of certain fish, you might need specific lures to get their attention. Let’s see how you can get your hands on the lures.
How Can You Get Lures

Fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds also relies on finding the right lures. However, you’ll only be able to get these items after attempting a specific side quest from Kanya. Speak to her at the Scarlet Forest camp to begin this quest and get access to a wide variety of lures. Although you don’t necessarily need to finish this quest once you get the lures, doing so can help you get a better grasp of fishing.
Follow the steps mentioned below to change the lures equipped to your fishing rod:
- Step 1: Equip the fishing rod using the Essential Items screen in the radial menu.
- Step 2: Hold down the button that coincides with changing your weapon ammo type.
- Step 3: Choose the lure you want to arm from the list that appears.
That’s all it takes to change lures. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to change your lures while the line from your fishing rod is out in the water. You’ll need to reel it back in to change the lure.
