Discover 5 games to play while you wait for AC Shadows. Find your next adventure with our top recommendations.

After over a decade of waiting for an Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan, Ubisoft has finally listened. AC Shadows marks the first time the Assassin Brotherhood makes its way to Japan. Shadows refines upon the RPG formula that Ubisoft adopted from Origins with a crisp combat system. In addition, AC’s signature identity of historical accuracy is also present in this game.
So, if you cannot wait any longer for AC Shadows to drop, here are 5 games to play while you wait.
1) Rise of The Ronin

Rise of the Ronin is set during the end of the Edo period, in Edo, Yokohama, and Kyoto. Made by the developers of Nioh, a high-quality and challenging combat system is guaranteed. Furthermore, the open world is gorgeous, encouraging exploration on horseback and the glider.
Players can also climb to higher areas via the grappling hook. As is custom with Team Ninja from Nioh 2 onwards, players have the freedom to create a character of their choice, allowing them to express themselves as they see fit.
2) Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

When Tenchu meets Souls, Sekiro is Hidetaka Miyazaki’s first game set in a Japanese setting. The game takes everything that makes Souls great and cranks it up to 100. With a combat system that puts every other Souls game to shame, incredible traversal via parkour and the grappling hook, and phenomenal bosses, it is a must-play for every fan of Eastern settings. It is for this reason that Sekiro won Game of the Year.
Keep in mind that the game can be very difficult for newer players. However, once you master the system mechanics, the game is a lot of fun.
3) Ghost of Tsushima

Set in Feudal Japan, during the Mongol Invasion of the Tsushima Islands. Ghost of Tsushima is an Assassin’s Creed game in everything but name. The game features a breathtakingly beautiful recreation of Japan, a parkour system, and a satisfying in-depth combat system.
Players take on the role of Jin Sakai, a Samurai who is the last member of his clan. The story is also well-written, with strong major and supporting characters. Additionally, the game also features some of the best side quests out there.
4) Nioh 2

If you’re a fan of Souls games, then you will love Nioh 2. Nioh 2 is arguably the best Souls-like out there, with a lot of build variety, versatile stances, and quality boss fights. The game is set in a Japanese setting with fantasy elements, such as the addition of demonic beings called the Yokai. Although the story isn’t anything special, it certainly isn’t bad. Additionally, the game does a good job of environmental storytelling as well.
While there is no open world here, it can certainly scratch the itch of a good Eastern video game until AC Shadows drops.
5) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

This list would’ve been incomplete without mentioning the game that made Ubisoft turn their franchise into an RPG. After the success of The Witcher 3, Ubisoft added a massive open world, weapon rarities, side quests, and dialogue options in Assassin’s Creed Origins. From that point, they kept on refining that formula up until Shadows. So, it goes without saying that the Witcher 3 is one of the greatest games of all time.
It does everything that modern Assassin’s Creed does, except better. So, it is recommended that players play this game until Shadows drops, so they can see the inspiration firsthand.
