Who is Akane Sawatari in Chainsaw Man? Explore this figure’s identity, strengths and abilities, and role in the series.

Chainsaw Man is a beloved dark fantasy series created by Tatsuki Fujimoto. It introduces Denji, an orphan who gains the powers of the Chainsaw Devil and aims to improve his life by becoming a Devil Hunter. However, this is easier said than done in his tumultuous world filled with chaos and death.
Throughout Denji’s journey, we come across various characters who pose obstacles to him. Akane Sawatari is one such individual who was a mystery during her introduction and largely remained an enigma until the very end. Despite her lack of screen time, her contribution to the first major death of the series has left a lasting impact on fans. So, who is Akane Sawatari in Chainsaw Man?
Akane Sawatari is a former civilian Devil Hunter who joins hands with the Gun Devil and Katana Man to steal Denji’s heart. Here is a closer look at her character.
Who Is Akane Sawatari in Chainsaw Man?

Akane Sawatari is an antagonist who turns against the Public Safety Bureau and forms an alliance with the Gun Devil. While her motive for doing so is never revealed, she is driven by the desire to kill Denji and steal Pochita.
Akane is generally calm, cool, and collected, mainly acting as the strategic head of her operation. She has some form of control over the Katana Devil and manipulates Katana Man’s hatred of Denji for her own goal.
At the same time, when faced with overwhelming power, Akane quickly crumbles. When Makima killed her subordinates using an invisible force, she was able to identify her enemy but had no way to defeat her.

Nevertheless, Akane is a memorable antagonist with fearsome powers in the series. She has shown ruthlessness in achieving her goal, paying little mind to the death of others. Her role in the Katana Man Arc has also earned her the ire of fans.
Akane Sawatari’s Strengths and Abilities
Akane’s main strength in Chainsaw Man is her contract with the Snake Devil. She can summon the entire devil and command it by sacrificing her fingernails. Her orders can make the Snake Devil consume other devils and spit them back out. When they are returned, these devils notably change their allegiance and can be used by Akane.
Akane can also use the Snake Devil’s large body for direct attacks, as seen in her attempt to harm Kobeni. Finally, Akane is an analytical individual who always has her eyes on the main goal. While she may not be able to face the likes of Makima, she knows when to attack and when to retreat to achieve victory.
Akane Sawatari’s Role in Chainsaw Man

Akane is a critical antagonist in the Katana Man Arc, introducing herself soon after Katana Man began fighting the main cast. While her ally was beaten by the Curse Devil, Akane revived him and motivated him to continue his fight.
Through this, Katana Man greatly harmed Aki and was prepared to kill him. The nearby Himeno desperately sacrificed her entire body to use the Ghost Devil’s powers and save Aki. Unfortunately, when the devil began attacking Katana Man, Akane ordered the Snake Devil to eat it.
Soon after, Denji and Katana Man had their fight, where the protagonist lost. Right when Akane attempted to kidnap him, however, Makima used her invisible force to kill all her subordinates. Things got worse when Kobeni entered the scene to harm the only surviving villains, Akane and Katana Man. Hence, they had no choice but to leave Denji and escape.

This wasn’t the end of Akane’s plans, as she used Katana Man’s connections to the Yakuza to her advantage. The pair prepared a horde of zombies to attack the Devil Hunters and kill Denji. Regrettably, their targets had expanded their forces through additions such as the Angel Devil, Beam, and the Violence Devil.
They comfortably beat the zombies while Aki tracked down Akane. Determined to avenge Himeno’s death, the deuteragonist had formed a contract with the Future Devil. He then charged forward to face Akane.
Akane Sawatari’s Final Fate in Chainsaw Man
During Akane and Aki’s battle, the former revealed how she had tamed the Ghost Devil and faced Aki with it. When defeat seemed near, however, Aki realized how the Ghost Devil could only track him through fear. He cleared his mind and decapitated his enemy as Akane watched on in shock.

While attempting to draw out the Snake Devil, Akane was further stunned by Kobeni. The Devil Hunter held a knife to her throat, restraining her for further questioning. Alas, this never took place, as Akane was unceremoniously killed by the Snake Devil itself. As per Makima’s report, this was an involuntary suicide due to her contract with the Gun Devil.
Since the Gun Devil wouldn’t have wished for its information to be revealed, it would have likely influenced the Snake Devil to kill Akane. This marked the tragic end faced by Akane. She was later seen during the Gun Devil Arc as a body controlled by Makima’s chains, though she had no consciousness.
Conclusion
Akane Sawatari may not be the most recurring individual in Chainsaw Man, but she plays a very important role. Having contributed to Himeno’s death, she significantly raised the stakes of the series while forcing Aki’s development. Her interference lets us glimpse into Makima’s immense power as well as Kobeni’s surprising skills.
While there remain several unanswered questions about her character, her impact on the series is undeniable.
