Let us take a look at Joel’s character in No Return, which is the latest mode in The Last Of Us 2 Remastered.

Joel is one of the 10 playable characters in the No Return mode for The Last of Us Remastered. He is also one of the eight unlockable characters. Let us take a look at Joel’s character in No Return and what makes him a good pick.
Unlocking Joel is more of a domino routine. You first have to play as Ellie and unlock Dina by completing two encounters. Then, with Dina, you will again have to complete three encounters to unlock Jesse. Next, using Jesse, complete another three encounters to then unlock Joel’s brother Tommy. Once you finish four encounters with Tommy, you finally get to unlock Joel.
Joel’s Character in No Return Playstyle in Last of Us 2

Joel is one of the, if not the, most beloved characters from the game. His tough dad side mixed with his softer, empathetic emotions towards Ellie make him a strong fan favorite. Just like in the main campaign, Joel proves to be one tough unit in the No Return mode as well. Joel focuses on close-range takedowns, with his choice of weapon being a custom revolver. This gun has all its upgrades from the get-go. He also perseveres when it comes to taking less damage against any melee attacks, but the downside is his inability to dodge any strikes against him.
Joel begins his badass run with a single shiv, the shiv crafting recipe, a 3-durability upgraded clove, a sidearm holster, and the previously mentioned fully upgraded revolver. The fact that his sidearm comes fully prepared saves you resources to use on other weapons.
Shiv Upgrade Bench for Joel’s Character in No Return

The Shiv upgrade bench is a series of three stages for Joel. Let us take a closer look at how the stages branch out to Joel’s advantage.
- Faster Stealth Kills: This stage allows Joel to perform stealth kills at a quicker pace of +100% speed. He also has a low profile and is far less likely to be found by the enemy.
- Craft More Shivs: The second stage allows you to craft three shivs at the same time while using the same number of resources that you normally require for one. You get to save time and resources and hold up to six shivs at the same time.
- Grabbed Enemy Movement Speed: While holding a hostage from the back, you can now move with quicker steps. This allows you to position yourself quickly, not only while shielding yourself but also when attempting a stealth kill.
