5 Major Video Game Releases Coming in Winter 2025
As the year ends, there are already enough games on the market keeping gamers busy. Publishers tend to align game releases with Christmas to take advantage of the holiday season and generate strong sales. Between early October and December, five major video games have been confirmed, as not many publishers are willing to release games during this period. Rockstar Games, a giant in video gaming, is preparing for the sixth installment in its major franchise, Grand Theft Auto.
5. Ghost of Yotei
Ghost of Yotei was announced this year following the massive success of Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch Productions has announced the release date as October 2, 2025. You play as a female warrior, Atsu, in Hokkaido, Japan, in the year 1603. Her path to vengeance allows her to access new weapons and, hopefully, new combat mechanics and exploration.
Additionally, the developers promise more narrative choices for the protagonist compared to the previous game. The community feels hyped, as Ghost of Tsushima thrilled its audience and became a big hit.
4. Grand Theft Auto 6
Rockstar Games’ biggest franchise, Grand Theft Auto, has no dates yet. However, Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar, is releasing another game on this list in September, so there is a high chance GTA 6 will launch around December 2025. Developers have confirmed that it will include a female protagonist—the first of its kind—and a return to Vice City. The trailer humorously features several viral internet videos and memes inspired by the state of Florida.
It’s Rockstar, so there’s no doubt that the video game giant will meet the audience’s expectations, given its track record with GTA 5 and the Red Dead Redemption franchise.
3. Borderlands 4
After Borderlands 3 dropped the ball on its storytelling, its sequel is arriving with greater expectations. Developers have promised seamless gameplay without loading screens, more weapons, and a grappling hook—perhaps the biggest change, as the Borderlands series has typically been more grounded in its movement mechanics.
Co-op will be available for up to three additional friends, and the game will release on every console and PC, possibly with cross-play support. Borderlands 4 is releasing on September 23, 2025, according to its Steam page.
2. Double Dragon Revive
Double Dragon Revive is a classic action belt-scrolling beat ’em up that brings modern gaming elements to an old-school style. This fully 3D scroll-fighter aims to revive the genre in an industry currently dominated by action RPGs and hero shooters. Double Dragon Revive will be releasing on October 23, 2025, with high hopes from the community. The game’s visuals are comparable to Street Fighter 6 and look promising.

Directive 8020 is a survival horror game set to release on October 2, 2025. It is the second title in the Dark Pictures Anthology. Supermassive has showcased gameplay changes and a refined interactive horror experience that will impact the fate of your protagonists. A multilinear narrative and permanent character deaths will determine how you reach your ending in the vast world of Tau Ceti f, a planet 12 years from Earth, where you soon discover it is inhabited by not-so-friendly denizens.
