5 Best RE Engine Games

Here are our picks for the five best RE Engine games solely limited to Capcom.

RE Engine was considered to be one of the most optimized engines in the video games industry. That is, until Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds were released. These current-gen games really put the RE Engine to shame. Before these games, the optimization was so great that some Capcom games were achieving 60FPS on the base PS4.

We have made a list of my five favorite RE Engine games from that era.

1) Resident Evil 4 Remake

This is one of Capcom’s last few cross-gen releases that showcase the optimization of the RE Engine. Resident Evil 4 easily achieves 60 FPS and high resolutions on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. There are options to enable ray-tracing on these consoles as well. As for the last gen, the PS4 Pro provides a mostly 60 FPS experience, though at a reduced resolution.

As for the base PS4, the performance hovers around 40-60 FPS. These are pretty impressive numbers considering how beautiful the game looks. And when you think about it, this is a 2023 title that you can actually boot up on the base PS4. The game itself is also stellar and actually improves upon the already timeless Resident Evil 4. Moreover, somehow makes it even better.

2) Street Fighter 6

Out of all the big fighting game franchises, Street Fighter is the single one with its latest game having a cross-gen release. Most, if not all, of the modern fighting games are locked to next-gen consoles like Tekken 8. But gamers still running the PS4 and Xbox One can play Capcom’s renowned SF6.

That is possible because the game was made on the RE Engine. It is just another showcase of great optimization of this engine from the studio. Street Fighter 6 is one of the best-looking fighting games on last gen, too. It’s not like Capcom sacrificed a whole lot of visuals to achieve a smooth framerate.

3) Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry 5 really showed us what the action genre is really capable of. The game itself was a complete visual upgrade from its predecessor. At the time of its release, gamers could play through the entirety of DMC 5 on the base PS4 at 60 FPS. This also paved the way for amazing visual fidelity for its time.

RE Engine’s further optimization was showcased when the next-gen version of Devil May Cry 5 came out. It supported up to 120 FPS and resolutions of up to 4K with options to enable ray-tracing. There was even a turbo mode, which allowed players to increase the speed at which the game played.

4) Resident Evil 2 Remake

The seventh mainline game was Capcom’s first RE Engine game, and it managed to revive the almost dead RE franchise. Resident Evil 2 Remake came next, and it further improved upon the optimization of 7. Capcom managed to create an almost flawless survival-horror game with this one.

It even ran at almost consistent 60 FPS on the base PS4. It is not an exaggeration to call the visuals of this remake out of this world. They were so great, and the fact that the base PS4 was able to run this at such great performance. This game really cemented that Capcom was back and the RE Engine would lead the way for the future of their main franchises.

5) Monster Hunter Rise

Even though Monster Hunter Rise is not a complete sequel, it is still packed with hours of content. The fact that Monster Hunter Wilds did not make it into the list is a testament to something. Gamers miss the old RE Engine.

The same engine that made Monster Hunter Rise run at 60 FPS on the base PS4. That very same engine is now sadly struggling to run the latest Monster Hunter game on current-gen consoles.
