A zombie survival RPG, Days Gone was first released on the PS4 in 2019 and quickly shot to fame for its massive zombie hordes and thrilling open-world adventure. Bend Studio has remastered and released the game for the PS5 and PS5 Pro to take advantage of current-generation hardware.

There is good news for PC players as well. While Days Gone isn’t being re-released as a remaster on PC, its remastered visuals are added to the base game for free

Sony launched Days Gone Remastered on PlayStation on April 25, 2025. That same day, the developers rolled out a graphics update to the base game on PC and released the Broken Road DLC. If you own a copy of Days Gone, the graphics update significantly boosts its visuals.

World Graphical Improvements

Perhaps the most noticeable change comes in the form of world graphical improvements, which breathe new life into Oregon’s wilderness. The update introduces a new sky and atmosphere simulation, utilizing ozone and spectral light modeling. In simple terms, this allows for richer, more realistic lighting conditions throughout the day. Colors appear more natural, and sunlight has a more nuanced intensity, resulting in sharper backgrounds that make even distant mountain ranges feel closer to real life.

Significantly Darker Nighttime

One of the standout elements of this enhancement is the significantly darker nighttime, which raises the tension during after-dark encounters. Freakers (the infected enemies in the game) now blend into the shadows more effectively. As the player rides out along the road with the bike’s headlight piercing the oppressive darkness, nighttime exploration feels riskier and far more atmospheric.

Other Changes

There are several smaller changes that polish the game’s visuals for PC. Improvements to screen space indirect lighting and ambient occlusion boost the realism of how light bounces off surfaces and how shadows behave in small crevices and corners. These effects enhance depth perception and make environments feel more grounded.

That being said, the graphical changes to the game are largely on the subtler side. They are not the kind that result from redeveloping the game on a new engine. While the PC version of Days Gone adds the new visuals for free, the Broken Road DLC costs $10. The DLC adds Horde Assault mode, Permadeath mode, Speedrun mode, and an Enhanced Photo Mode.
