Starting out as an archer in Oblivion Remastered can be a challenge without the right gear, especially when enemies become tougher early on and tank multiple arrows without slowing down. Fortunately, there are several powerful bows you can find or buy within the game’s opening hours that make a huge difference in combat. Here are five of the best early-game bows every marksman in the making should track down in Cyrodiil.

5) Silver Bow

Stats

  • Damage: 10
  • Enchantment: None
  • Health: 180
  • Value: 55
  • Weight: 12

Description

The Silver Bow is a must-have for an early-game archer, as it can deal damage to ghosts, wraiths, and Will-o-the-Wisps even without an enchantment. The bow is commonly found in caves and dungeons and can be purchased from most weapon vendors at a very affordable price. The Silver Bow should be added to your arsenal until you can get your hands on a unique enchanted bow.

If you don’t mind getting loyal Imperial soldiers or guards killed, you can also loot the bow for free without gaining a bounty. Travel to the Inn of Ill Omen to find an Imperial Legion Forester standing outside. Lure hostile creatures from the Oblivion Gate north of the inn to get the Imperial Legion Forester killed and loot the Silver Bow from him.

4) Fine Steel Bow

Stats

  • Damage: 10
  • Enchantment: None
  • Health: 158
  • Value: 60
  • Weight: 9

Description

A rarer version of the Steel Bow, the Fine Steel Bow has 10 base damage, equal to that of a Silver Bow. The bow is the best you can find soon after beginning a new game, located at Fort Nikel, near a skeleton on the ledge outside. After finding the bow, head inside the ruined fort and climb up to the remains of the higher floor to find multiple steel arrows on the platform.

The fort lies along the path to the Weynon Priory, making it a natural choice for early-game marksmen to pick up the bow before heading to Kvatch or looking for any other bow on this list. Use the first Sigil Stone you find to enchant the weapon and have a super-early-game bow that packs a punch.

3) Bow of Infliction

Stats

  • Damage: 18
  • Enchantment:
    • Damage Attribute: Agility 5 points
    • Drain Skill: Marksman 15 points for 60 seconds
    • 3000 charge, 30 uses
  • Health: 364
  • Value: 5240
  • Weight: 20

Description

The Bow of Infliction is a unique enchanted ebony bow. The bow has two enchantments: Damage Attribute: Agility increases the chance for targets to be staggered, and Drain Skill: Marksman makes it a devastating weapon against other archers. The bow is sold by Daenlin at The Archer’s Paradox in Bravil. The only drawback for the Bow of Infliction as an early-game choice is its base price of 5240. However, it is possible to gather that amount of gold easily within the first few hours of play if you know a few tricks. Furthermore, you can lower the price by playing the persuasion minigame with the merchant.

2) Bow of Infernal Frost

Stats

  • Damage: 8
  • Enchantment:
    • Fire Damage 10 points
    • Frost Damage 10 points
    • 200 charge, 7 uses
  • Health: 100
  • Value: 7091
  • Weight: 14

Description

The Bow of Infernal Frost dishes out high damage, but it also chews through Petty and Lesser Soul Gems like no tomorrow. To acquire the bow, head to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Cheydinhal and speak to M’raaj-Dar. The bow’s price is pretty steep, and M’raaj-Dar is one of the three merchants in the game who cannot be persuaded to increase disposition.

1) Frostwyrm Bow

Stats

  • Damage: 15
  • Enchantment:
    • Frost Damage 15 points
    • 500 charge, 21 uses
  • Health: 300
  • Value: 709
  • Weight:14

Description

The Frostwyrm Bow is the best bow to get early on in Oblivion Remastered, both in terms of how quickly you can acquire it and for the consistent damage it deals. Unlike the Bow of Infernal Frost, the Frostwyrm Bow holds a fairly large charge, and you won’t have to recharge it as often.

To obtain the Frostwyrm Bow, defeat the Uderfrykte Matron miniboss located south of the Dive Rock camp in the northeastern corner of Cyrodiil. It can be a challenging trek, and the Uderfrykte Matron is no pushover, but the Frostwyrm Bow is worth the trouble. To cheese the boss, shoot at it from a distance and higher ground. This will not aggro the monster and will land you an easy kill. You can also start the Horror of Dive Rock quest to gain further rewards for hunting down the Uderfrykte Matron.
