In this guide, we explain how you can get your hands on Infected Essence in Palia. The item was introduced with the Elderwood expansion.

The Elderwood expansion for the free-to-play game Palia was released on May 13. This expansion not only widens the map but also introduces new main story quests, newer enemy types, and more.
While playing through this expansion, you’ll learn that much of the forest surrounding Kilima Village has fallen victim to a negative energy, known as Echo or Infected Essence. This Echo has taken over the plants and wildlife of the region, causing a host of problems. However, even with its adverse effects, Infected Essence is a valuable item to possess in the game.
So, while you’re fighting creatures that it infects, you’ll also need to collect as much of the resource as possible. In this guide, we’ll go over how you can get your hands on Infected Essence in Palia and what you can use it for.
How To Get Infected Essence in Palia

If you are trying to create a stockpile of Infected Essence, simply be on the lookout for glowing purple orbs around the Elderwood zone. However, keep in mind that you will need to proceed far enough in The Nature of Shadows quest to get access to specialized gloves. With these gloves, you’ll be able to safely handle and interact with the Infected Essence. Each orb you collect will give you up to 3x Infected Essence.
You can also pick up the resource from creatures it affects in the region. However, for that you’ll also need access to other items besides the special gloves we mentioned earlier. Complete the following quests to be able to collect Infected Essence from animals.
- Bugging Out quest will give you access to the Elderwood Smoke Bombs.
- Shot in the Dark quest will give you access to the Elderwood Arrows.
- Something Fishy quest will give you access to the Elderwood Lure.

Infected Essence has multiple uses in the game. For instance, you can trade the resource with Tamala after completing The Nature of Shadows questline. The following list shows the items you can get from her in exchange for Infected Essence.
- Artifact Mystery Bag: 500x Infected Essence

You’ll also need Infected Essence to craft more of the Elderwood variants of Smoke Bombs, Arrows, and Lures. For instance, to make 20x Elderwood Arrows, you’ll need to combine 10x Infected Essence with other resources. Similarly, for 20x Elderwood Smoke Bombs, you’ll need 10x Infected Essence. Finally, to make an Elderwood Lure, you will have to spend 50x Infected Essence.
Besides the crafting, you can also buy pieces of furniture from a cute little creature called Piksii in the Elderwood region using Infected Essence. Keep in mind that some of the furniture pieces can have substantial Infected Essence costs, so you’ll need to keep collecting to acquire them all.
