Part of the Conjuration school of magic, summons are creatures and Daedra that briefly fight for you until the spell duration runs out or they die. Their brief company can come in clutch for ranged classes like the Mage and Archer, as they greatly benefit from having a front-line fighter to distract enemies.

You can buy summoning spells at Mages Guilds and increase their duration by creating custom spells at the Altar of Spellmaking. Here are the five best summons ranked by cost and combat effectiveness at their respective Conjuration ranks.

Top 5 Summons in Oblivion Remastered

5) Skeleton Guardian (Journeyman)

While it may not boast flashy abilities or massive damage numbers, the Skeleton Guardian is a reliable summon for early to mid-game adventurers. The Skeleton Guardian has a very low mana cost and high duration for the value it provides—a trait common to most skeleton summons. Its moderate health pool and solid defense let it hold off enemies long enough for the player to flank, heal, or attack from range.

4) Hunger (Apprentice)

A nightmare made manifest in the madness of the Shivering Isles, Hunger is a spindly Daedra that can be summoned to deal 10 melee damage per attack. It depletes enemies’ Fatigue with each hit while replenishing their own, making it particularly effective at sapping powerful opponents.

3) Clannfear (Expert)

At 36 points of melee damage, the Clannfear dishes out heavy punishment for its low cost. Its total damage output is amplified by a 20% reflect damage ability. However, the best part about this demonic dinosaur summon is its speed, which allows it to quickly close the gap with targets and make good use of its spell duration.

2) Gloom Wraith (Master)

With the Gloom Wraith, you know exactly what you’re gonna get: a nigh-unkillable tank with 500 HP and several resistances. The wraith deals inconsistent damage with Frost spells, but its physical and magical resistances make up for it. While the Gloom Wraith has lower DPS than some of the other master-level summons, it also has a lower cost and fulfills its role as a frontliner perfectly.

1) Storm Atronach (Master)

The Storm Atronach has the lowest Magicka cost for a Master ranked Conjuration spell with a long time duration. In addition to scoring plenty of style points for its electrically charged form, the Atronach has no vulnerabilities, takes up a lot of space, and can block choke points. Its shock attacks make it effective against other Daedra since most of them are weak to Shock damage.

The Xivilai would have taken the number one spot were it not for the nerfs, which prevent it from summoning Clannfear of its own. The Dremora Lord gets a lot of style points, but it wastes precious time blocking and missing spells. Shivering Isles has powerful summons like the Golden Saint and Dark Seducer, but their strength is proportional to your level.

This makes them exceptionally effective in the late game, but not worth it for those power-leveling skills early on. But with the Storm Atronach, you get stable DPS, Shock damage, relatively low mana cost, and high durability.
