It seems Sony is working on a handheld device that will be a successor to the iconic PS Vita. It will reportedly be powered by an AMD chip.

Multiple reports from reputable sources have mentioned that Sony is working on a PlayStation handheld device, which is in the early stages of development. One could argue that Sony already has a handheld in the form of PlayStation Portal, but it’s just a fancy game streaming device and not a true handheld.
The Portal cannot play games natively and needs to be always connected to the PS5 via Wi-Fi to run any games, which defeats the purpose of a portable handheld device. On the other hand, the PS Vita, which launched in 2012, could play games natively and locally without Wi-Fi. A new leak says the upcoming PlayStation handheld will be a PS Vita-like device that will run games natively.
The leaker also shared some details about the SoC that will be powering that device. In this article, we will analyze the new leak and explain what it means for the upcoming PlayStation handheld.

Sony Is Reportedly Working on a Handheld Device

The PS Vita was the last true handheld Sony launched, but that was 13 years ago. Since then, the console giant hasn’t launched anything. However, the success of recently released handhelds in the market, like the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally, sparked some new interest within PlayStation. It appears Sony wants to get back into the handheld market once again.
A renowned leaker, @Jukanlosreve on X, said that Sony is in the early stages of developing a new SoC for the handheld. The SoC is reportedly a joint project with AMD, which is codenamed “Jupiter” internally. It will apparently be manufactured using Samsung Foundry’s SF2P process node, which could deliver a significant efficiency advantage. However, Samsung doesn’t have a great track record of providing good yields, so we will have to wait and see if Samsung can deliver on its end.
However, the leaker shares that the deal is final, and things could change at any moment. After all, Sony has a history of axing extraordinary projects. Also, since this is not an official confirmation, we would advise you not to put too much faith in this.
