Cracking the bank vault in Dead Rails is the fastest legal way to line your pockets before the next horde arrives. Every town along the track hides at least one bank stuffed with stacks of cash, but only a lucky few players ever peel those doors open.

The secret lies with top hat zombies, the fancy shamblers that carry vault codes like grim little bankers. Track them down, grab the slip they drop, and you’ll turn a routine supply stop into a jackpot run.

The bank is the single richest building on any Dead Rails route. It spawns randomly in towns along the track, and sometimes you’ll see two in one settlement, sometimes none at all. Keep an eye out for a squat stone façade with barred windows; that’s your signal to slow the train, clear the streets, and plan a quick smash-and-grab.

Next, secure the combination. Only top-hat zombies carry it. These special zombies look like normal ones, except they’re wearing an old, worn-out top hat. They usually lurk within a block or two of the bank, though they can wander; on rare occasions one even spawns in the starting fort. Drop the zombie, loot the body, and you’ll see a slip of paper labelled “Bank Combination.” Pick it up before the scenery scrolls out of reach.

With the code in hand, head straight inside the nearest bank. Push through the lobby, locate the iron vault door, and interact with the keypad prompt. Enter the full combination exactly as shown, as there’s no partial credit. If you typed it correctly, the vault swings open and showers you with cash, high-tier weapons, and upgrade materials. Grab everything, but move fast; fresh zombie waves often spawn as soon as the lock disengages.

Remember that bank codes disappear when you die or start a new run, so don’t hoard them. Also, the lobby town’s bank stays locked for now, and even if developers enable it later, your funds reset between runs, making lobby looting pointless. Prioritize active route banks, spend the payout on better guns or train modules, and keep rolling toward the next jackpot.
