The main core of Umamusume Pretty Derby is managing the various characters, also known as the horse girls in the game, and guiding them toward success. For that, training will be one of the most crucial aspects. Training in Umamusume is not a simple mechanic.

It has many different segments and parts, and players must understand them to successfully build a thriving career for their horse girls. In this article, we will explain everything related to training in the game, so you can easily learn the core mechanics.

Training in Umamusume Pretty Derby Explained

Training is an important part of Umamusume Pretty Derby. You will need to learn all the ins and outs of it to successfully create a team of horse girls, aka Umamusume, who can win any race, including the URA Finale.

Selecting Your Horse Girl

To train any of your team members in the game, first, you will have to start the career mode. There are a total of 26 characters in the game; however, you will only have access to the ones you have already unlocked, including the five default characters. Pick the horse girl you want to train, and you will be able to select her Support cards as well as the Legacy Team. Every single character in the game has distinct traits, stats, and skills, similar to their real-life horse counterparts.

Once you have picked the Umamusume of your choice, your next task will be to link her to two different Legacy characters. Legacy Umamusume essentially means inactive racers of the past, and they give you some stat boosts. Selecting the correct one will be crucial since the buff will have an impact on your horse girl’s training as well as her overall career. We advise that you look at the natural skillset of your Umamusume and focus on the Legacy traits around it.

Building Your Support Card Deck

After that, you must shift your focus to the Support Cards. One character will need up to six Support Cards to have a complete Build. Furthermore, you will have to play the gacha game to collect five out of the six cards, while the last one can be borrowed. The support cards do exactly what their name suggests. They simply help and support your characters during training so they can have better starting stats.

In addition to that, your deck will also determine which stat your character works on during training. If you are unsure about the cards, then you can use the Perks button to check which stat boosts you are getting. We suggest you check it before starting any race. Moreover, leveling up your support cards will also be an important factor, and you should always go for cards with relevant buffs rather than something that looks interesting on paper but is not useful to your character.

After the setup segment is complete, you will finally find yourself in the Umamusume academy. Now, your primary focus should entirely be on the training itself and winning races to build a thriving career for your horse girl. Most of the time, your goal will be to win races, and you can check said goal at the top of the screen alongside the fan count requirement. If your horse girl lacks in Fan Counts, then you can fix that by entering side races through the menu.

Everything you do in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, from training to entering Races, ultimately will lead you to the biggest stage of all, the URA Finale. So, your job will be to make sure that your character is ready to take on any challenge. For that, you must train your horsegirl one race at a time and focus on the track you will be racing on. Also, since you will have a limited time to prepare her, you must learn about the core stats listed below.

All Core Stats:

  • Speed: Determines your Horse Girl’s overall pace.
  • Stamina: Determines how long it takes her to get tired.
  • Power: Determines the acceleration capabilities of your character.
  • Guts: Provides extra motivation, especially during the late stages of a race.
  • Wit: Helps your Umamusume make smart decisions and keeps her focused.

Speed, Stamina, and Wit are some of the best stats to focus on during the early stages. Throughout your time with your character and till the URA finale, you must keep working on stats constantly. You can also spend skill points to unlock additional abilities that will help your character win races more easily.

Other than that, remember to rest your horse girl after each training session since they tend to drain all energy. Injuries are also a possibility if you push too hard and ignore resting.

Additionally, the mood is also a factor in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. It directly affects your character’s performance during races. If she is not in a good mood, then she won’t be able to perform to her full potential. To fix said mood, you can spend a day on a recreational outing.

Most of the characters in Umamusume: Pretty Derby will have around eleven different career goals. If you manage to win races to complete all of them while having the required amount of fan count, your Horse Girl will qualify for the URA Finale.

Once the active horse girl becomes a veteran and gets added to the Legacy list, you can then use her to train future proteges. However, if you fail to win any of your Umamusume’s career goals, then all of the things mentioned will become a distant thought, and her career will be over. Moreover, in this scenario, your contract will be terminated. So, follow this guide thoroughly and make sure that it doesn’t happen.
