Have Marvel Rivals devs solved the flying meta problem by introducing Phoenix as a Duelist to the game in Season 3?
The flying meta in Marvel Rivals has been haunting players since Season 2.5. Ultron, as the first flying Strategist, enables this meta comp. Basically, it includes up to three or more flyers, diverting the enemy’s attention, making it hard to deal with them. What ends up happening is your Vanguards are unable to focus the flyers because of their ability kit restrictions. Some Duelists may not pay attention to them. And lastly, the Strategists die quickly from all the damage raining down on them by the flyers meta. The devs have introduced unique ways of nerfing this meta, but Phoenix is not the answer.
Phoenix Is Situational Against the Marvel Rivals Flying Meta
Phoenix is a ranged Duelist. She will be a hitscan hero, who are great for dealing with flyers. However, she may not be the most perfect fit for the flying meta in Marvel Rivals based on the team’s positioning.
Jean Grey has 12 primary attacks before she requires a reload. All of them deal decent damage, but the problem is that she has a superior damage falloff compared to other “anti-flyer” heroes. Her damage falloff begins at 10m and caps at 30m and beyond. When dealing with flyers, you will most likely be at a distance of more than 30m or beyond in most cases. This is why Jean Grey will be ineffective in such a situation.
Additionally, Jean is made to disrupt teams that are grouped together. So, if the flyers are not grouped together, which is often the case with them due to their impressive mobility, she won’t be able to use her passive to the fullest. In turn, you won’t get the most out of her kit and won’t be dealing enough damage.
While Phoenix isn’t a bad choice against flyers, we wouldn’t recommend it as your first option. The Punisher does wonders against flying heroes. He is a hitscan character whose assault rifle does consistent high bursts of damage. This allows you to out-damage the healing that flyers usually have access to. Add other hitscan characters like Hela, Adam Warlock, and Luna Snow to the mix, and you have assembled the perfect team against the flying meta in Marvel Rivals. Alternatively, you can avoid the stress of a perfect aim by opting for heroes like Scarlet Witch, Iron Fist, Spider-Man, and Cloak and Dagger. While they require other mechanical skills to get rid of flyers, you won’t have to worry much about aiming perfectly.
